CLOSING THOUGHTS

Why pens, mugs, and other paraphernalia

Some people have wondered why Palladium Books (and other companies) offer pens, mugs, art prints, T-shirts, bookmarks, and other non-book items. That’s easy to answer.

First, some people like these types of products, us included. We wear our shirts and use our pens and notepads all the time. I love the stupid Rifts notepads with that great Kevin Long art at the top. These are also items that a gamer’s spouse, kids, and non-gaming friends and family might enjoy. Kathy often used our pens. Caleb, our warehouse guy, was just saying this morning how much he likes our T-shirts (he was wearing the Rifts Logo shirt) and pens, and that he loves the quality of all our merchandise. As long time fans already know, we are all about quality, fun, and giving our customers things they enjoy.

Second, these types of products take very little of my or Sean’s time – in many cases as little as a few minutes to an hour or two. Often these ancillary products are left to Wayne to do, with us offering the initial idea, tweaks, and final approval. By comparison, a book takes months of writing, editing, art direction, coordination, and actual printing.

Writing a book well is not as easy as some people may think. It is time consuming and in the case of Sean and myself, we are dealing with all manner of day to day responsibilities which, by the way, include the coordination of books in progress that we have not yet revealed to you. Bwahahaha.

Real world challenges and emotions can hamper being creative. I know I sound pretty darn good in person and in interviews, because a lot of people have told me so. They are happy to see me doing so well after the death of my beloved Kathy Simmons. I have been told by numerous people, including my grief therapist (never be afraid to ask for help), that I’m doing great and managing my grief well, but it’s been difficult and it is a long process. My grief has been on par with the loss of my Mom and Erick Wujcik. Some days I’m pretty inspired and can write-up a storm, other days I’ve got nothing, or the words come slowly. On rough days, I usually try to do business things or artwork and other less mentally and emotionally strenuous things rather than write. Yes, writing with passion is strenuous [that it is! ~Sean]. It requires concentration, focus, and creativity. Still, overall, I’m doing well and I appreciate your understanding and soft-spoken concern about me and Palladium Books. We’ll be fine.
