Let's talk about Manga or Anime

Unread post by The Baron of chaos »

Really I know the Superhero comics are natural stuff for a RPG like Heroes Unlimited. But it hinkt hat the game could easily fit also some MAgna and Anime too.
What do you think could fit well the Heroes Unlimited theme?
For me I see Naruto as very fitting my idea of superpowered ninjas.

I think there are several thematic manga that could make a good basis for HU campaigns.
With anime however, most players and GMs I've talked with don't feel the Palladium system adequately encompasses the fast-paced action of most anime.

Really, in most manga, the dramatic and melodramatic elements aren't so different from American or European comics: Eight Man for example is not so different from Deathlock or Coldblood Seven in terms of story themes.

Palladium is not the system I would use to play an anime-themed game. However, with some modification an anime-style character could be converted to the palladium system, but if all the players wanted to play something like that I'd probably pull out BESM instead.

But I've seen HU and Rifts games wehre players played characters based off of anime, like Nuku Nuku or Belldandy.

There are a lot you could draw down parallels on:
Project A-Ko neatly mirrors Supergirl and similar stories (at least, up to a certain point in the story).
Aside from stylistic differences, the stories and characters aren't so different: both American comics and Japanese Manga feature lonely outsiders, valiant crusaders, lone-wolf anti-heroes, and all the other staples of the mythic heroic genre.
Their storytellers are inspired by ours, who are in turn inspired by them, and so on.

Heh...that reminds me of a fun fact:

The large eyes, as seen in Anime, which many Anime-Haters always seem to point out vehemently....were actually originally borrowed from American Cartoons like Betty Boop. So if you are an American that hates large eyes in Anime, kick yourself in the butt.

So...American Animation/Comics leant itself to Japanese Animaion/Comics...which is now being copied by American Animation/Comics. :D

---------

Also, many Japanese consider the "small eyes" of American comics to make the characters seem cold and/or lifeless, etc.

Heh...food for thought. Eat up peeps.

Peace

i've always thought that jojo's bizarre adventure would be good material for a heroes unlimited theme. i first found out about the series in the late 90's, and i haven't been able to get it out of my mind ever since. i haven't made my own "stand user" power category, but i've found that you can tweak certain existing powers(and one power category in particular) to get some very nice results.

that is a good idea, though. most of his foes were pretty easily seen as superbeings.

Yeah, he is definitely not Avengers material.

Midnight Eye, Cobra, and Golgo-13 all also come to mind.

Really, so long as the players like the system mechanics, any manga can influence and inspire a game campaign. Story, characterization, and role-play become the most important elements.
Palladium does not adequately cover the sorts of rapid-fire combats, and somersaulting robots found in most manga and anime, but that isn't a reason not to play Palladium.

Agreed. Even if the combat speed couldn't be reproduced there's some neat anime-ish concepts that would make for an interesting Palladium Product.

Northstar really needs his own comic.
He could date Quicksilver, since their both speedsters Quicksilver would finally have someone who could keep up with him, and thus wouldn't be so cranky.

I suspect that both Quicksilver and Northstar would realize that they have much in common.

No, I never read that.

I was starting to like Sharon Selleck, the blonde with the milk allergy who used to be Julie D'Angelos' roommate. She had a focal role in FF Annual #17. In that issue, we saw the consequences of letting those Skrulls be cows for all those years.

Oh man, don't tell me Johnny fell for a second Skrull woman.

Granted, a race of alien shape-shifters would be pretty high on the "oh yeah, well I dated this!" charts. But still, skrulls = ick.

Sharon wasn't a Skrull. She simply fell prey to a psuedo-Skrull plot, involving milk from the Skrull-cows. Remember the three Skrulls from FF #2? Seen again in the Skrull-Kree War. Well, they were apparently producing milk, which carried their DNA...

Right, of course I remember them. I was just afriad she was turned into one herself after a bad case of skrull milk hence her "allergy" to it or something equally marvelishly silly.

Right, of course I remember them. I was just afriad she was turned into one herself after a bad case of skrull milk hence her "allergy" to it or something equally marvelishly silly.

No, she was always allergic to milk.
Prior to that story, she had passed on ice cream or a shake because of it.

For several months, I ran an excellent N&SS/HU game based on the Street Fighter series of anime and games.

Fighting games really provide ample material to expand upon.

Tobal, Mortal Kombat, Tekken, Street Fighter, etc, etc, etc. All of them have visually striking characters that just scream "turn me into an rpg"

At the time though, Mortal Kombat wasn't even a movie yet.

Well yeah I just meant the Mortal Kombat games....I imagine very few people were inspired by the movies to make an RPG.

Northstar really needs his own comic.
He could date Quicksilver, since their both speedsters Quicksilver would finally have someone who could keep up with him, and thus wouldn't be so cranky.

I suspect that both Quicksilver and Northstar would realize that they have much in common.

They would hate each other in the time it took to shake hands.

(On a side-note, I don't believe Quicksilver could actually keep up with Northstar.)

I'm just curious as to when Quicksilver suddenly went gay?

He didn't: I was just keeping the joke alive.

Last I knew, after attempts to reconcile had failed, the Crystal/Quicksilver marriage was totally over.

It might make more sense if he was bi instead of "gay" I think.
And with his new time powers he might surprise you.
Damn ICE/BCP/BorderPatrol! Damn everyone who won’t damn ICE/BCP/Border Patrol!! Damn everyone that won’t put lights in his windows and sit up all night damning CE/BCP/BorderPatrol!!!
If you support ICE/BCP/BorderPatrol at this point, you would have called the Gestapo on the people surreptitiously moving into your neighbor's attic and huffed that you were only following the law.

"New" being the key.
His previous power levels have him at speeds much less than Northstars': Generally, anywhere from 175 M.P.H. to Sub-Sonic Speeds. Great inconsistencies in Quickies' speeds: sometimes he's a 200+ M.P.H.er, sometimes he's a Mach One guy.

I just hope Quicksilver doesn't end up like the current Reverse Flash. I like Hunter Zolomon, but I don't want an influx of speedsters who suddenly move through time somehow to simulate speed instead of simply running really fast.

I think one of the things I like about the structure of Manga, is the way most stories do not continue like American comics do. Each story has a definite concluding point, and if there is another story, it just starts from whenever it does. It would be like The Avengers without the filler-issues, and one-shot throwaway stories. Imagine, The Kree-Skrull War, and then nothing, until there was a story worth telling.

One of the attendent weaknesses in American Comics is the need to have a story in each issue every month, whether they are any good or not.

Of course thats one point. Another point is that mangas are oftne under the control of their creators unitl the story end. Generally the manga heroes does have an ending, tragic or serene, but often tragic. And is unlilkely to be resurrected . Or they don't die at all or they reamain dead. Plus Mangas tend to have a very good way of depicting showdowns. Let's admit it the final showdown between Spike and Vicious in Cowboy Bebop last episode is something...Cool
