This is all covered (in some detail) in Fleets of the Three Galaxies.

So, I can't really join in on the discussion...

The pirates in Phase world in my own game are both numerous and vicious. I have some who are well funded by other beneficiaries and others who are on a tighter than a shoe string budget. Basically my really poor pirates are stuck in one system unless they get a lucky break and get a ship with a CG drive. (Interstellar drive that is.) :)

Those would be very good for say a pirate who has infiltrated a ship as a passenger, and he needs to sabotage the ship at the right time.

Could put out a fake distress signal(in a semi remote area) and rob whom ever comes for you.

As for OP fields, Could get around it by having a separate force field for the Bridge and the Engine room, a FF built into the wall wouldn't be to hard to do. Question is can you have a FF in side of a FF

Yeah, but how many small or poor companies going to be able to afford to place a force field there protecting the bridge or engine room. Not many.

Yeah it would help to do that. I can see the big companies and big military ships being able to do that. :ok:

ACtually they never said whether or not super dense materials could prevent an OP field from being able to pass thru it. The warships might use that sort of technique. Of course a low powered force field might be standard on a 3G's military ship.

I think it would be affordable, if a FF is FF regardless of its MDC or even SDC, as long as it keeps OPF equiped people out. Heck come to think of it if an OPF makes you intangible, in regards to matter, but a FF keeps you out then seems to me OPF can go through matter(any matter) but has troubles with energy(any energy) then you may not even need a FF, just a very large energy source

And what to stop the pirates from slipping someone aboard in a sensor shielded crate. They could even rig it up with a small life support system to keep their operative in good shape. And if they were truly evil that crate could be disguised as, say a refrigerated crate. That would explain the power usage.

Modular freighters with external cargo pods are probably the easiest ships to pirate...there are so many ways one can get the attachment stanchions to let go...from a few well-aimed shots to gimmicking the onbaord computers ahead of time to fire the attachment bolts/clamps at a certain time and place...
Big problem is, the truly valuable stuff isn't going to ride in an external can(unless the valuables have special environmental needs, or the owners don't trust the shippers' crew not to pry into the crates), but will go into internal holds, where it's harder for a casual error or structural failure to dump a cargo can into deep space for 'finders keepers".

That's another way of doing it too! Conversely it's a way for the freighter to have a secret of it's own too.

Our group had created mercenary company using Q-ship (a war vessel disguised as a merchant). So we could carry cargo, while protecting the rest of the merchant fleet, getting paid extra for joining the fleet. Or be hired to deliver more important things (whih paid more to begin with). Or be hired by an empire to operate in their area (because they know you will be blowing up pirates)...Lots of other fun possabilities too.

Thats an interesting idea, pirate the pirates. Go as a cargp vessel wait for them to come after you then board them........reminds me of Asterix and Obelix

We were also a mercenary company, so we had tanks, shuttles & fighters, air & ground troops, etc. on board. Plus enough hidden weaponry to take out a space station or medium destroyer. The fun of the merchant is that it is a very cheap spaceship that holds a lot. We didn't need to wait for the pirates to board us, we had lots of big guns to blow up any ship(s) they might have (though if they did you can only imagine how sorry they would be, what with us being overly prepared).

Hardly. They have the resources to design and build their own vessels. Their Wolf Heavy Cruisers are quite literally mean as all get out! Their leaders are former high ranking naval officers from various power blocks of the 3 Galaxies. They also on more than one occassion worked with CKs. One in particular, a fellow who goes by the moniker of "Cap." They work sectors of space that is infested with pirates. They have some connections to one of the larger Intelligence agencies of the 3Gs too.
They are in the process right now of fielding a new Battlecruiser. The test will follow as soon as they run up on some pirates. (The Battlecruiser is going to be based loosely on my Myrmadon class Battlecruiser.)

Actually they had a ship to start with many years ago in the campaign. They ended up with a benfeciary who helped finance them on their first couple of major military pieces of hardware. They became selfsufficient within a couple of years. We sped thru some of these times to save playing time. They are at this point one of the most successful merc groups. They are the equal of the Trigalactic group, except they specialize in their space any. As a matter of the campaign fact they have contracts with the Trigalactic occassionally as they transport service and their space based artillery platforms and space based interdiction group. Since the Trigalactic is an army with few ships.

The Wolf Heavy Cruiser. And I do use some of Kitsune's special rules. But of course I make sure all of my 3G's ships have the same range categories.
This ship has been used for pirate hunting in the Phase World setting!

Name of Class: Wolf

History: This class of Heavy Cruisers are being constructed by the "Spectral Winds" mercenary Force at their Asteroid Headquarters located in Independent space near the Earth II Colonies and The Colonies of Man. This Heavy Cruiser is being built in response to the "Spectral Winds" needing the fire power of a Heavy Cruiser for certain operations and Heavy Cruisers being very scarce and expensive to purchase. The Wolf will be as capable as any other Heavy Cruiser presently being constructed by any of the major powers in the three galaxies. It'll be a well balanced machine with good amount of armor and armourments.
The Wolf class is a long compressed cylinder shaped warship. It design and it placement of it's weapons are designed to be able to bring the maximum amount of firepower on target as they bear. It's structure is heavily reinforced for combat. It carries a powerful set of variable shields. It is very well armored and compartmentalized for the prevention of loss of atmosphere.
The weapons load on this vessel are quite fearsome. It's primary weapons are three dual barreled 35cm laser cannons. It has six single 25cm heavy laser cannons to augment it firepower. (These are still considered part of the primary firepower.) The secondary weapons are eight single 15cm lasers. The secondary weapons and the primary weapons against targets protected against lasers are the four 20cm Heavy Mass Driver Cannons. It's point defense is very heavy considering it is made up of gravity rail guns, lasers, tachyon scatterguns, mini missile launchers, and Heavy Phase cannons. It has a fairly heavy missile armourments with two cruise missile batteries, two long range missile batteries and two medium missile batteries.
The Wolf is equipped with a sensor system the equal to most of the major powers in the Three Galaxies. The have extensive ECM and ECCM systems, easily as capable as cruisers of the Three Galaxies.

In my opinion its too small for all those people and ships and equipment, though many of the ships in PW suffer from this. Its like once you enter a Warsheild your in a pocket dimension

the OP Out of Phase Field, allows anyone to turn invisible and walk thru walls -- a definite must for a surprise boarding party. very easy to get control of the bridge or engineering.

likewise the beamers take out the living and leave the ship intact.

Phase Transceiver would be a must for pirates, who could teleport out of a trap with local navy forces. You should be able to teleport out during flight too (I think).

I can think of some very sneaky/nasty things to do in a "darkside" type of campaign.

Emphasis mine..Is anything ever easy? n/m VERY easy...

I think this is a good place to reply with the comment that most ideas that are good for pirates are also good against pirates...

You might be right. Although some ships like military ships shouldn't use it unless it some sort of emergency on the order of ships destruction. Other wise any time there was a military engagement the fleet that fled the battle field would come home to a conquered planet.

Actually I forgot to last night. Too much daytime stress and the need for watching TV prevented me from posting those.

I'll plan on posting the Destroyers and the light Cruiser from the "Spectral Winds" tonight after work.

Name of Class: Nike

History: This class of Light Cruiser is being constructed by the "Spectral Winds" Mercenary force at their asteroid headquarters. This Light Cruiser is being built in response to the "Spectral Winds" needing the fire power of a Light Cruiser for certain operations and with Light Cruisers being scarce and expensive to purchase. Nike will be as capable as any Light Cruisers found in the three galaxies.
The ship is built with a flattened hull shape. The bridge is located within the hull, not on an exposed area. It is a well armored vessel. Compared to the other powers light cruisers classes it's the one of the best armored vessels of this class. It is very well armed also. It is equipped with four 25cm heavy lasers. For secondary weapons it has six 15cm laser cannons. Also included in it's secondary armourment are four 20cm Heavy mass drivers. This weapon is also there to help out if the vessel is facing something immune to energy weapons. It has a heavy compliment of anti-missile/ anti-fighter and anti-robot compliment.
The missile weaponry are also the equal to the major powers of 3 Galaxies when compared to the their space naval assets. It is equipped with two cruise missile launchers with an adequate supply of cruise missiles. It is also equipped with four long range missile launchers. It has two medium missile launchers and eight mini missile launchers to round out its missile compliment. For a final weapon system it has four Heavy phase beamers built in ball turrets.
The Nike is equipped with a sensor system the equal to most of the major powers in the Three Galaxies. The have extensive ECM and ECCM systems, easily as capable as cruisers of the Three Galaxies.
The Nike is equipped with twelve power armor equivalents to the Silver Hawks and it has a flight of six medium fighters among it hanger bays.

Name of Class: Vapor Trail

History: This class of Destroyer is being built by the "Spectral Winds" mercenary to fill the needs of the group. The Vapor Trail will be a well balanced rough little machine. It'll be a rugged little work horse.
It was designed along the a vertically compressed cylinder. The ship is designed to have it's bridge buried within the hull to avoid being vulnerable to lucky enemy shots or strafing star fighters. For it's size it is one of the meanest little ships in the 3 Galaxies. Although some have commented that it should be considered a destroyer leader because of it's size. The "Spectral Winds" have been using this vessel to enforce customs checks in some of the places they are patrolling.
The vessel is equipped with three 15cm lasers for it's primary weapons. It has a single cruise missile launcher. It is also equipped with two medium missile launchers. It is equipped with four mini missile launchers to round out it's missile compliment. It's point defense is very comprehensive from Point defense lasers and point defense gravity guns. The point defense is rounded out with the tachyon Scatterguns. The little ships are also equipped with two Heavy phase beamers for special enemies.
The Vapor Trail is equipped with a sensor system the equal to most of the major powers in the Three Galaxies. The have extensive ECM and ECCM systems, easily as capable as cruisers of the Three Galaxies.
The reason the "Spectral Winds" command decided on the name for this vessel is because they felt their light enemies would be making these. And if anything heavy decided to try and chase one of them, they would be left eating their vapor trails.
It is also equipped with 4 medium star fighters.
