BIG GUNS

Unread post by Greyaxe »

Just wanted to point out a couple of discrepencies with regard to medium and heavy weapons in the phase world setting. Medium and heavy weapons should only be able to fire 2-4 times per melle each. Not equal to the number of hand to hand attacks per melee. Can this be addressed in future releases of PW?

yeah.

All of the ships in my Fleets manuscript were based on the rate-of-fire as found in Phase World, pages 154-155... most of which can be fired as often as the gunner has attacks.

In Three Galaxies, most of these have been capped at three or four times per round. Which is fine and balancing... but it makes my manuscript look like a CJ Carella left-over (the Golgan ships can fire their 2D6x100 disruptors 14 times per round because they all have a Zebuloid gunner).

The big question is: which printing takes precedence? And if can the books be corrected at some point so that they are the same, please... :x

It's one of those "reality-check" moments you have to use with PB.

AGGG! At that rate of fire, even with lower-powered weapons, the Golgans would be EXPANDING, not declining....

The weapons systems rate-of-fire, gentlemen? Debating the abilities of the Zebuloids is a different thread.

And yes, the Golgan space fighters with Zebuloid gunners can fire their weapons 56 times per minute.

The targetting computer speed is another matter, which may be the reason many of the big guns rate of fire is reduced to 2-4 shots per melee. It takes a lot of power and time to move these guns to target, they are huge weighing many tonnes each. Perhpas the gunner has no effect on the weapon at all. There is also the issue of "charge time" where the big gun needs to develop enough power or charge to fire. This may also be a factor. I think the big guns in the original PW need to be revised to reduce their rate fo fire for these reasons alone, not even taking into account the unbalancing nature of basically and unlimited rate of fire given in the Zebuloid example.

Very, did they survive the combat through some trick flying?

Ouch, Yes Im the captian of a ship and the rest of the party throws missiles at a problem like they were free. Often the price of replacing even one missile is bigger than the proffit. But back to the subject at hand. Rate of fire for the big guns.
I must note that the rate of fire for the Hunter is too low. THe 2d4x100 particle beams can only fire once per melee each. I think it should be upped to two or three for game balance purposes. Maybe this could be revised in future prints of Phase world as well.

two ways to deal with the cost of missiles and other big stuff...

One:
assume it is mass produced to such a degree tht the price should be divided by ten

Two: accept the the fact that the 3 G's suffer from hyper-inflation, and that a cab ride to the starport really does cost 7000 credits.

I always went with the Hunter also being a bit underpowered. The energy system barely powered the guns. No book reason for it, just how I justify it to myself.

Maybe a revised Hunter with a newly installed additional reactor dedicated to the weapon systems will allow for a three shot rate of fire.

It's also one of the most common warships to encounter within the CCW. The scimtar being more common.

The hunter upgrade would be as simple as adding an independant reactor for the Particle beams (im making a big assumption the existing p-beams simple require that much time to trickle charge from the main reactor) increasing their rate of fire to three times per melee as per the 3g book and voila a hunter upgrade.

A better capacitor could be the problem too. Adding a few minor changes to the Hunter would probably make it a lot better. Maybe even changing a little software to allow it to fire it's cruise missiles faster would help too.

It's a destroyer. It was built at first by the Wulfen of the 3Galaxies. It was adopted by the CCW.

Agreed, I think the hunter is due for one of two things upgrade or retirement. Too bad it is my favorite Destroyer

I'd like to see the results of your tweaking the Hunter Gadrin! :)
