Travel Questions

This sucker looks like it's going to cost me a pretty penny but she'll be worth it. My main concern right now is Air Travel. I live in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and I'll pretty much need to fly there(buss is another possibility but only if it's cheaper) Does anyone know of an airline that would go from Halifax N.S. o M.I. and how close is the air port to the con. I don't want to get stuck buying a $200-$00 dollar ticket and then have to spend $100 cab fair ya know? Anyone have any suggestions?

Airport to warehouse is like 5 miles, no big. Thing is, hotels and such aren't at the warehouse, they're elsewhere (warehouse is in an industrial district). Last year, I simply rented a car for the visit. It was totally worth it, because it allowed me to come and go as needed, make food runs, etc, as well as providing a place to store things during the day. Believe me, I was making 5 or 6 trips a day to my car to drop off stuff I'd bought, and to pick up paperwork and books I needed for games. This coming year, I'll need it to store my costume for the costume contest on at least one day, as my costume isn't the sort of thing I could easily wear all day.

As far as airlines are concerned, I've no idea for where you are. Best to simply put your local airport into something like orbitz or travelocity and see what you've got. DTW is a fairly sizable midwest hub, so you can probably get there with just one stop. It's likely to be a switch in Toronto or Chicago, depending which side you want to put customs on. My personal recomendation, if it's possible (again, I don't know DTW's flight schedule well), is to try and get a flight directly from somewhere in Canada into Detriot. Chicago's customs lines and waits are enormous, while Detroit's are probably quite small and manageable.

---------EDIT----------

Your nearest major airports, Halifex and Moncton, both have direct flights to DTW. Looks like taking Air Canada out of Moncton would save you like $500 US, so the extra couple miles might be worth it.

I will probably be going to the con without my girlfriend. So if you need a room to crash, let me know. I will be getting a room @ the ramada.

Heed these words :)

If you stay at the Ramada, it's really close to the Airport, and its only a 10 minute drive to the Open House - I walked it each day, no probs.

Check with an online travel site, and check the carrier you end up flying with - American Airlines couldn't fly direct from LA - Detroit, and other carriers may make seemingly bizarre stops along the way.

Yeah I did the Ramada too and it was fine, plus like gmask1 said its a short drive. But hey, make friends with someone who has a car. Lots of people at the open house stayed at the Ramada I'm sure you could bum a ride now and then. I know my car was loaded!

Let us know if you need any more info. I know those of us that went will be more than happy to help as best we can. :)

I'll have my car there so I will be willing to carpool again. Me and my girlfriend gave rides to someone (was in one of my games) and I dont mind doing so again.

You won't be the only one from Canada either.

Get yourself to teh hotel, and we'll take care of ya. My small delgation and I will be at the Ramada begining on the Friday. My name is Braden Campbell. Ask for me at the front desk, and we can all carpool over.

But I get to choose the music. ;)

If that doesn't prompt you to buy it, I don't know what else I can say.

I'll be renting a car (with my brother), so we'll have room for anyone that may need a ride as well. It's not like we packed the car full of juicer harnesses and drug supplies or anything, so we've got the room.

We gave Jason Richards a ride back to the airport last time, and apparently he made it back safe, so my bad driving isn't that dangerous.

My friends and I are taking the train from California probably. One of my friends is terrified of flying, and last time we flew. Not fun. So this time, I guess its the train for us. Two days there, two days back. Woohoo!

Yea, about the same for me. I hate flying, so Greyhound is my ride from Central Florida to Michigan. Hopefully the terminal isn't too terribly far by cab ride to the Ramada.

As it stands I think my best bet is to go by bus, I do appreciate all the help though guys. Things are still a little shakey money wise but it should be doable. Right now my student loan budget covers my living costs while I'm at school. Once I get my second installment in January, I can get a job without costing me money and any money I make will make goes towards the con. Four weeks at even minimum wage will cover the con nicely I think.

They sure did last year. It looks like I'll be driving up alone unless I can convince MadManMike to tag along (I'll be coming up Wednesday night or Thursday morning). I should also be staying at the Ramada, so I'll see people around. :)

Same with me and my wife, we live in Newcastle (east of Toronto), my buddy used to drive from Newcastle to Windsor (when he was at the U of Windosr) but his mom and dad still lived in Newcastle, he said it wasn't a bad drive, and he did it in winter.

..I'd love to drive a load up, but we traded my Windstar in along with the wife's Taurus for her Chevy Uplander, and with three kids and a mother-in-law, it's the only viable transportation for the whole family.

..I've driven my share of junkers in the past, so I'm game to drive half the way.

..Anybody know how the road is around Chicago these days? Last year it turned into a three hour delay. Xar and I drove back through Indianapolis, but Indiana was a bit monotonous.. Of course, I was driving all the way back to Missouri, so that may have just been the 2000 yard stare..
