Quick Starship Stats

Unread post by Pox »

I don't know if any of you would allow this, but I been sort of tinkering with the rules for Space Station Creations from Dimension Book 6: Three Galaxies and wanted opinions if this sounded half-decent or how I could tweek it more.

For Length I would take the suggested length and knock a zero off the end and a quarter of the overall length.

MDC would be the middle of the road of the range and again another zero knocked off.

Crew again gets a zero knocked off.

Cargo space is basically the lowest number listed for docking ports/hanger bays

Med bay capacity would again be another time when I would knock off a zero.

Example: a Small craft would be around 300ft long, be able to carry 3-6 small crafts, have 2,500 MDC, and a crew of 24. This is as opposed to a small space station being anywhere from 2500 to 5500 ft, 3-6 docking ports, 10,000 to 40,000 MDC and a crew of 240.

Does this sound any good or should I figure another way of quickly writing ships up?

*shrug* sounds as good as any...but I preffer the AU:GG book for my starship construction.
Some number crunching does need to be fudged to make the two settings tech to mesh, but I'm a bit of a masochist, so it's all good :D
No matter how good a 'quick stat' system is, a GM will still prolly take nearly an hour per ship design..even 'quick roll' ones :?

For my virtual 2 cents...

I also suggest to revamp the AU system, for reason
like price already included, and the "slot" system.

Thought prices in the 3galaxies are already bugged.

Yeah I saw someone's comment about the system in AU:GG but unfortunately my setting in Northern Montreal has left me with no way of picking up books regularly and haven't gotten around to getting that one yet.

Thanks for the input so far.

While this might not be much help, but the
Manhunter book also has - MDC - ship-design
section, which is not as detailed as the AU,
but needs less tinkering.

Not as daunting as one may think... but one does need to fudge a lot of numbers for it to work...
Cuz the weight / mass numbers don't mesh up either.. you can (after conversion from SDC to MDC) still have a 10,000 mdc craft only be around 500 tonnes, which is kinda absurd.
For that little snag, I just tend to find a simmilar classed ship in one of the PW books (or other game systems) that closely matches concept, and use THAT wieght instead of the AU:GG numbers which are far too low. :?
Again, it' smostly the GM's job to do this number crunching, or audit the players work so it matches the campiagn setting.
A lot of work, but hey..if used right the results are damn good.

Yeah, in the AU ship design, tonnage is definitely
bugged. I mean a 3 km long carrier is "just" 10.000
tons, right :? .

But for my part, calculating a ship's weight was somewhere
down on the priority list.

Hopefully, there will be some ship building guidelines in the forthcoming Phase World Spacecraft book.

Hint, hint.

Only reason ya need the mass of a ship is for ramming pursposes, really ;)
Unless ya wanna have your brains implode trying to calculate 'mass / Thrust = headache' :D
But I try and keep things semi-realistic...don't succeed, but at least I try :P

It was the now out of print rifter 34. A good article but really only good for small ships and was point based. i prefer a cash based system for purchasing reasons.

Wouldn't it be credits system for the system you're talking about DarkMax?
