NE-74GL range?
Listed on PG 55 of PW sourcebook it has a range of 4000' Should this be 400' insead, are we to assume this huge range is a typo? Or is this a Naruni hidden gem that should be used by every player?

I agree given the description states it has greater range than a typical grenade launcher which given these examples:
NG-lg6 grenades 1100 feet
WI-GL4 grenades 1000 feet
WI-GL20 3000 feet
4000' may not be an exageration.

In the flavor text it is mentioned, that the NE-74GL uses
microgrenades, which gives greater range.
And in the text, damage is reduced, range is increased
compared to - for example - the Double Threat gun.
So, I guess, it is ok.

Most modern rifle add-on launchers have a range of about 1300 feet... modern vehicle-type launchers have a range much greater than that.
4000 feet is probably correct, whcih is scary.

Actually, it ain't that scary.
A long burst - while excellent to clear the bushes -
does like 4d6 MD. Not much, and eats up ammo
real fast.
Of course if several of them are used to hose a
platoon... Ouch.

I am equiping an entire squad of marines with them as defence troops for our frigate, which runs Hartigal wepons into combat zones, they have proven to be very effective against large numbers of targets when several marines fire at the same targets

Let me rephrase:
Its range is good. Not outstanding, but good.
Its damage is not at least impressive... However...
If squad A is equipped with HI-80, each 8 members
do like 60 MD per attack.
Now, if suqad B hoses the area with 8 long burst, they
- combined - do 32d6 (112 on average!) to EVERYTHING
in that area.
Not bad, right?

cool .. nothing like taking out or injuring something from a long way off, so that IF and when it gets INTO range for more 'up close and personal' damage, its mostly dead already
and since a long burst is MORE than 4 shots, its bound to hit the target regardless of HOW fast on the feet they are. i think thats what i saw about modern combat and multiple shots fired at one target.

Creator of the Chi grenade. Used in game by Kevarin [GM] and self as Mai - Civilian Martial artist that got amped via experiment. Ghost weapons and shirts rule.
Nano Missiles - used once and GM banned further use. They weren't THAT bad. and did stop a demon scout ship from returning with valuable info.

Nope. Only if it means 4 or more guided missiles.
A long burst from an assault rifle is perfectly dodgeable.
Or from this full-auto grenade launcher... Thought
the targets are better be fast enough to get out of the
blast radius (which is over 20 meters).

Exactly spraying an 80' area is pretty hard to dodge out of but RUE suggests if you make two successfull dodges using two attacks you could get out of the way, if the GM allows it. I personally wouldn't but hey there could be some out there that do.

Two action for a soldier on foot, none for a Terrain Hopper.
On the other side, imagine the poor fellow who is caught
(or more properly - before dodge he is "just" targeted)
in 8 simultanous salvoes.

Is there anything anywhere in all of Palladium that indicates how far you can dodge?
I, myself, could make a dive for cover, but not if it was more than, say, six feet away.

The jumping range is a good rule of thumb...
...but except for some power armor, where
is the jumping range of a character?
And again, dodging with - for example - a motorcycle
is feasible, yet the vehicle will not leave the ground.
So, good question.

i tried to work out the 'how many feet and inches a char could move in 1 second
because the 'dodge' is to avoid getting hit by the actual weapon. NOTHING was said about dodgeing the fall out.
in my mind, i think at that time, no bonuses would apply. you've dodged the first attack, thus getting the bonuses, and the second is a raw burning up of an action to GET out of range. so its down to who/what is faster .. the splash damage radius or the person trying to out-leap the goo.
for some reason, i'm picturing a Napalm bomb going kablooey .. and while the first impact is bad, its the ones that follow that path that will do the most damage, because there is no safe place to haide.. other than raw speed.
so - thinking that way .. the char's weight = unencombered spd of 100% .. char's weight increases due to armour and weapons [clothing and reg shoes do NOT add weight] spd drops .. char now weighs in at about 125 .. char spd could be reduced [and should be] by nearly 25% ...
thinking that way .. someone would NOT be able to totally avoide the splash damage in one second, because the reaction for life over limb on self preservation is delayed and slowed by excess weight ... thus the distance per second comes into play.
but iguess i'm tryingto think too rationally and forgetting this is a case of flash over the badguys .. when the good guys dont have super speed and can dodge anything cause the book says a 'second dodge means you escape all splash damage' ..

But if you are in PW when those grenades with the 4000' range are fired you can always hope to be in control of an P field. That is one way to dodge an attack of that kind.

I know what dodge means. But in the case of getting out the blast radius it is easier to hit the toggle and avoid it entirely.

Rifle launched grenades are never aimed at a target but at the ground where the target is standing to catch them int he blast radius. SO in order to sucessfully dodge a blast radius you would have to be moving long before the explosion,

Especially in this topic, where we are discussing
a full-auto grenade launcher.
Otherwise, for my part, I bet on air-burst ammo
(for example with electronic timing).
---------------------------------------------------------
Oh, and there is another issue.
Underbarrel GLs fire their shells with a rather slow
muzzle velocity, like 50-60m/s (160-200 feet per sec).
The NE-74GL is probably much faster, more
like the microgrenades used in these...

Those micro grenades are a great little weapon. Lobing a few dozen of those down range would be really nasty.
And come to think of it. I think since the US military is thinking of using a "metal storm" version of a 40mm grenade launcher in the future, I feel things like this could easily deployed in the wars of the 3G's.

While it is a bit hazy for me why the contemporary
US decisions influence 3 galactic warfare ...
...I also think, that such a vehicle mounted multiple-launch
device would work better with mini-missiles.
You know, greater range, with the option of guided ammo.

On the other hand, it can result in a relatively light weapon

I still rate the good ol' RPG, sitting around the table, and
munching on fast food, to be higher quality fun.
Frankly, getting four plus adults, each with his/her
own family and job to a table, at the same time for
like 4 - 6 (or more) hours and regularly... It is just
not possible.
Therefore we play MMORPGs.
As a side note, we just participated in an interstellar war
(and frankly lost it) - which gives much input for any
space opera setting.

It's too bad Tardis's don't exist either. That would be another way to get around.
"Your Grace," she said, "I have only one question. Do you wish this man crippled or dead?"

I wouldn't use a phaser if I had one. Sorry but my hatred for everything ST is pretty consuming! I really hate those shows nowadays.

Sorry Darkmax! That is how badly Rick Berman destroyed ST for me! I used to love it at one time. And at one time it was in my top ten favorite shows.

That is kinda true in the case of B5, SG and so on...
You know, unless you do an anime, having non-humanoid
aliens really cuts your budget (or we can end up in a
Muppet Show, which is... Well, not preferable for more
than a few moods... But Pigs in Space ).

Well back to the topic on hand. What about various weapons range of hand weapons from Phase World?

A bit under my style...
But then I thought, that in the 3 Galaxies, most
"actually" fighting infantry do wear PA, others, like
artillery gunners, vehicle crew or just guards do
not need "heavy" weapons.
Kinda like todays concept of equipping non-frontline
infantry with "only" a PDW.
Or like they moved from the assault rifles (7,62*51)
to the "assault carbines" (like the .223 Rem alias
5,56*45).
-------------------
As again, we had a few problems with balance,
even in DMB2.

I meant by imbalance, that the Silverhawk has
a dreaded tri-cannon, weights 450 kg, PS 50 and
main body of 420 MDC.
The ground pounder, from the same power block,
however weights twice as much (907 kg), have inferior
weaponry, PS 45 and a main body of 450 MDC.
And cannot fly.
Oh, and finally: costs more.
Talking about game balance...

Most of the weapons in PW have a range shorter than 2000 feet. Surprising but true, even the big rail guns dont have incredible range. I guess due to micronization and gravatonic rather than rail gun technologies the punch is greater but the range is poor.

Dunno. GR guns come in small sizes - ie.
as handguns - and have smaller range.
RIFTS Earth EM railguns are about the size and weight
of your .50 BMG heavy machinegun and up.
Comparable GR guns do have the "standard" 1200 meters
(4000 feet) range. And the Battleram does have a CG gun
which are actually superior to the Boom Gun.
(And probably heavier than a loaded USA G-10)
