Or is that still 'classified'?"

"The human perchance for turning ANYTHING into an intoxicant was one of the reason the Invid as a whole tended to look down on the average Human....And one of the major reasons Flower farms were guarded...Running out the inevitable small groups of 'Flower-Stoners' was an almost daily chore, until Corg initiated the 'one strike, you're vaporized' rule....It might be added that despite the incredible stresses and pressures on them, the Resistance tended to be teetotalers, drinking alcohol only when local water quality was suspect...and also due to lingering rumors that we could detect the traces of the Flower in the bloodstream of those who partook of the Flower and its products..."

You-Will-Be-Exterminated?
I'd get up in the morning and watch the sun rise over the yardarm of my sky-ship as the sails billowed in the breeze and the land slid by 300-odd metres below. I'd grasp the mahogany ship's wheel, turn her nose a few points back onto the line, and feel pity for all those poor bastards below who have to work for a living. - My idea of the good life in Rifts.

All right class, settle down!
i apologise for the delay, but as my message said, i was stuck in the southlands with engine trouble for my alpha.
today were are going to cover the VF-1V Vindicator. the vindicator was the result of RDF traditionalists in the new found REF who had grumbles about the smaller alpha and Logan fighters comprising most of the air wing. the phrase "size matters" was banded about quite frequently, if i recall correctly. they maintained that larger fighters with more armor and firepower than the Alpha were needed to deal with zentreadi and any other threat we might encounter.
there were just enough of these 'bigger is better' supporters that they managed to push through a requisition for the kind of plane they wanted. frankly, i doubt they expected the result. The Vindicator was based on the Alpha frame, only enlarged nearly four times. it measured in at almost the same mass and dimensions as the VF-1, and managed to be less impressive than said craft. it had only a slight thrust improvement over the alpha, which meant the old VF-1 would leave it in the dust, and would out maneuver it. weapons wise it was basically an enlarged alpha, with a 70 missile Multi-missile system in exactly the same locations as the Alpha. sensor wise, they used the same sensors as an Alpha, of which you've already heard my thoughts about.
the fighter had only a few things going for it. as requested by the REF, it used the same control set up as the late model Valkyrie fighters. while this was a great step up from the original VF control set up, it was still rather complicated and made the Vindicator a plane best suited to experienced pilots. it had superior armor, a good 30% more protective than the Alpha or super valkyrie. and it could carry a GU-11 or GU-12 gun pod, which at the time was one of the best weapons in the air.
given that the traditionalists that pushed through its development had been espousing the Valkyrie as the solutions to the problems the REF might face, i suspect that the development teams were not on the band wagon. this fighter is about as far from a valk as you can get with the same mass and size. but it proved to be a very effective craft. its armor allowed it to take hits and stay in the fight better than some of the destroids, and the weapons, while a bit weak for its size, were perfect 'ringers' to augment formations of Alpha's.
with the advent of shadow tech, quite a few vindicators were built with Shadow Cloaks and Destabilizers, turning them into decent heavy strike fighters able to support the lighter shadow alphas.
vindicators of both types are still in use today, so be wary. at a distance it is hard to tell if your dealing with an alpha or a vindicator, and once you get close enough to tell, your usually doing so from a parachute as your plane goes down below you. fighting a vindicator is much the same as fighting an Alpha in regards to tactics, only you have to shoot many more holes in a vindy before it goes down.
odds are that the vindicator will not be further upgraded, but it would greatly benefit from the same boosters used in the Beta, which would allow it to break orbit on its own and overtake just about any opponent. likewise, there is plenty of room in the vindicators avionics bays for the same long range radar system of the VF-1, which would greatly enhance its abilities. that combination would turn this lackluster fighter into a lethal interceptor, much like the old Mig-31.

Do you think you can talk a bit more on the Shadow Cloaking Technology. And how it is integrated with masking normal technological sensors and the protoculture sensors used by the Invid.
OOC: Basically I want to know if the Shadow Cloaking Technology was an Add on Device that made the craft invisible to all sensors, or just the Invid Protoculture Sensors. If the latter is true, it makes the Shadow Fighters and Vindicators still invisible to regular human sensors without the Shadow Device? If that is the case, how would you incorporate the two different technologies into the game.

i'm not an expert, but i'll explain it the same way it was explained to me when i asked back when i first flew one.
a shadow device is a multi-dimensional field generator related to the fold drive. instead of moving a ship at faster than light speeds, it 'leaks' signals into hyperspace. thus any radar return or protoculture signal is altered in frequency to something that cannot be picked up. it apparently does not effect light as much, so it is not a perfect cloak. it hides the craft's protoculture signature and makes it invisible to radar, but does little to block its thermal, IR image, or detection based on laser systems like lidar.
its a double blind though. radar cannot pick you up, but neither can you use normal radar yourself when its active. the radars and radios on shadow device equipped fighters and ships have to be specially tuned to work despite the signal warping effect. flipping on that radar though tends to give you away, so you have to rely on the optical targeting and tracking systems, which are not very reliable on these craft.
shadow devices have to be built around the engines of the craft, its not something you can make modular. which is why so few old mecha were refitted, and it was mostly new builds that got them. it was much easier for the capital ships to be refitted with shadow devices due to the larger size, so most of those were merely refitted.

"Yep....excellent for hiding your fighters and ships until you enter optical range...and everybody knows that Invid optical sensors are hardly the best...The Regis had telescopic optical arrays of incredible range and resolution based on her Hives and some of the Clam Ships that could show up a Shadow-cloaked vessel quite nicely, but even She couldn't coordinate tens of thousands of Invid mecha simultaneously, so She could only oversee a fraction of the total battlefield and direct Her Children to vector in on the SFs...However, if you get enough mecha moving around and sharing their sensor data, even a Protoculture-sensor-invisible fighter's going to be spotted, especially in a hairball situation...Once in close, against a bright background, a Shadowfighter would be kept in visual tracking by Invid squadrons and treated accordingly....It was when Shadow'ed ships were at long range, and/or in an Invid's rather large blind spots that they were most effective...Heck, we learned that even old-fashioned jet fighters like the Falcons and Sukhois could get lucky and drop on an Invid patrol from out of the sun and claim first kills...
Shadowtech's real advantage was it allowed the REF to hide its numbers until they closed in and could then attack, ready and waiting while we were still waking up and launching for orbit....Once we knew what to look for, however, it was our ballgame again.."

I flew a Vindicator against the Invid during the occupation. Loved it. We would coordinate long range missile attacks with it against Invid Hives. I would have an old Cats-Eye a ways out handling targeting data for the missile launchers and it was tied into my targeting computer on the Vindicator. I would fly in and shot holes in the Hive's force field with my Destablizer. The Cats-Eye would than relay that to the missiles coming in. The missiles would fly threw the holes and hit the Hive.
Other missions were quite successful when using the Vindicator or any of the other Shadow Veritechs. One mission, which I can't go into much detail, involved a Shadow Veritech, a M.A.C. III drum bomb, and a Invid Reactor.

"Vindicators were vicious opponents, but they had to land sometime...and our smaller mecha could maneuver very well in close quarters...Of course, by that time, you'd discovered Cyclones, but that didn't help in space combat, where a Cyclone just couldn't keep up in a 'hairball'..."

I tell ya that thing could even pulverize a pair of odeons to scrap.Only prob we had was ya had to be carefull in atmo or ya'd rip the packs right off her.

"General military strategy and tactics I presume...dropping in and climbing out of a planetary gravity well repeatedly takes energy...even with the extra power provided by Protoculture, it takes a lot of power and puts a lot of strain on your craft....On small craft like mecha, you don't have a lot of space to spare for the boosters and heatshielding to allow you to yo-yo like that....
Generally, both Human and Invid commands liked to fight their battles in either space or in atmosphere, and rarely in BOTH...If atmospheric combat was expected in a space battle, it was assumed it would be your side going DOWN the gravity well...either dropping down to invade, or falling back to re-arm....Climbing UP out of a gravity well in pursuit of a retreating enemy was nearly as suicidal as retreating that way....In the latter, you were straining, likely damaged, and virtually hanging there on a straight-arrow escape path for any ground-based ordnance and energy wepons to pick you off....If you were pursuing, presumably somebody who already the high ground, they could pick you off as you climbed out...
Ideally, if you were launching up, you wanted an efficient means to move as many effective units as possible without budrening them with useless mass once they got to space...disposable boosters and carrier-shuttles...
If you were going the other way, down then up, you were talking a specialized mission profile that wouldn't match the specs for most fighter craft...If you were miunting an effective invasion force, it was more cost effective to give your main combat units re-entry capabilities to go down and tangle it up, but then rendevouz with larger units that would re-arm them on the surface or extract them...presuming your fighters or orbital bombardment had done an effective job of neutralizing dirtside defenses enough for larger craft and support forces to come down. For those missions that DID require an orbital escape capability, like recon or pinpoint strategic bombing, you had specialized units...or, with the advance of robotechnology, Beta booster units...Being an older unit, the Vindicator was before that advance as well as a victim of changing priorities that called for smaller, more modular vehicles.
The Alpha/Beta combination showed a move towards giving the rank and file units transatmospheric capability, but the bulk of fighters deployed against us on Earth lacked that....either through overconfidence or desperation, the REF had to win a surface presence, even if it was temporary, to relieve the fighter forces who couldn't shuttle back to space and the safety of the Moon under Bata-power...The Beta was a brick, the Alpha an atmospheric dart, and better equipped for atmospheric combat...It made sense to weight the complement of mecha deployed against the Invid on Earth, favoring more atmospherically agile craft..."

Thats why those of us in the Southern Cross had the Sylphide Veritech. It could achieve orbit under its own power, without relying on another vehicle to do so.

OOC: Don't care what it said in the original, and we've already discussed about the darkened cells to simulate space. If you have nothing else to contribute to this argument, why don't you simply be quiet, eh? The Tv series says its space, the cells are darkened as if its space, so you're wrong.

OOC: Thats funny Oreillyrel, the Narrator says its space and Rochelle says their MIAs are all adrift in space...
Eps. Half Moon
The Narrator: In the next episode of Robotech, the war against the Robotech Masters has escalated into a serious military confrontation, with neither side willing to make even the smallest concession to avoid turning the planet Earth into a living battleground. The United Earth Defense Forces plan to take the battle into space to protect their homeworld and challenge their alien foes. Using the main bulk of their Tactical Armored Space Corps, the Robotech Defenders plan to test the mettle of their mysterious enemies.
Eps. Danger Zone
Macross Broadcasting Anchor: And now for news from the war front. While Earth forces were successful in disabling one of the enemy craft, the remainder of the massive invasion armada maintains a steady and ominously silent orbit at 36,000 kilometers.
The Narrator: Meanwhile, the Robotech Masters' mighty ship floats above the Earth, untouched, unscathed and, apparently, unbeatable.
Colonel Rochelle Yes, sir. I have a report of our losses. 97 ships lost or out of commission. Pilots, 407 dead, combat ground personnel 359 dead, noncombatants 237 dead, and to the best of our calculations 319 missing in action.
General Emerson: Those missing in action, where are they?
Colonel Rochelle: Unfortunately they are all adrift somewhere out in space, sir.

Care to explain how the cells from the 1985 Robotech broadcast are darkened for the first battle (side-by-side with a restored Southern Cross cap) but normal for the 2nd battle? Care to explain the Narrator stating its space?
Again, to avoid repeating them, these points can be reviewed in this Robotech.com forum thread
No, we're going to have it out, Oreillyrel. You started it, you better be ready to keep it going. As it is, you're the one derailing the thread, not me.

"We never bothered with that sort of capability...true, a Space Booster could have been modified to provide a surface to space capability, but sending individual Scouts into formations of enemy fighters was suicide....Our strenght was in numbers after all...and with the Gosu came out, its real mission was command and control...so presumably we Stage 5s would be accompanying our troops into orbit aboard the Mollusc carriers to maintain unit cohesion...It wasn't until the experiments with the Gosamu that we began to toy with the idea of 'super fighters' able to reach at least low orbit by their own...Maybe wherever the Regis went, she's developed the concept into something truly useful, if she bothered keeping the Human form and development for our people...or maybe she just discarded the whole idea as smacking too much of the Children of Shadow..."

"Trouble rather the Tiger in his Lair,
Than the Sage among his Books,
For all the Empires and Kingdoms,
The Armies and Works that you hold Dear,
Are to him but the Playthings of the Moment,
To be turned over with the Flick of a Finger,
And the Turning of a Page"

:::The non-descript man records the latest speaker and notes the speaker again.:::
"Your Grace," she said, "I have only one question. Do you wish this man crippled or dead?"
"My Lady," the protector of Grayson told his Champion, "I do not wish him to leave this chamber alive."
"As you will it, your Grace."

Yes and No to the Sylphide.
The RPG identifies it as the Specter (non-transformable) Fighter, not as a Veritech Fighter known as the Sylphide.
The uRRG has an article about the Sylphide (Veritech) Fighter which was based on looking at the design (I would think) and several bits of overlaid dialogue that suggest it was a Veritech.
The 1st Ed. RPG IDed GMP Battloid had a similiar dialogue incident, but it not regarded as being a potential VT like the Sylphid.
However, no official word exists by HG to my knowledge on weather the Sylphid is actually regarded as a Veritech and what it might look like outside of fighter mode (the only mode it is shown in as the OSM has it as a non-transforming fighter).
ooc: very good comrade here's your 5oo geek points.Umm... is the Sylphide in the game books?

i would prefer we do not discuss things like this, i don't want to derail the thread.b at the moment the craft in question should be considered a 'fan design', even if it is later included. this thread is RPG canon only, from the old RPG. nor is the craft from the time period in focus here, that of the the sentinals/invid invasion/third invid war.
i've finished the veritech section, and next up is the Destroids. followed by the invid mecha, beginning with the Regents forces and finishing with the Regis.
after that, if the thread hasn't derailed, i'll cover the Post-invid Bioroids from RotM.
any other groups of mecha from the periods in question i need to cover?
i beleive that Taffy covered most of the human mecha from RotM already in his reconstruction era thread.
