the Chor'ii Totality
Warning, disturbing concepts ahead

The Chor'ii are a unique and bizzare race of beings. in form, they resemble terran Polar Bears, if such ursines stood on two legs, possessed 4 arms tipped with hands possessing opposable thumbs, and had 6 eyes, arrayed along both sides of the head providing 360 degree vision, and stood only 4 feet tall. their biology is unique, their bodily functions distributed across their entire structure, with few distinct organs. they posses no heart, with every blood vessel in their bodies wrapped in muscle fibers to pump blood, their respitory system contained in airsacs intermingeld with their guts and inside hollow bones. their gastric tract possesses multiple independant "stomachs", which also serve as reproductive and lymphatic centers. their brain is also distributed across their nervous system, in many redundant nerve centers. to kill a Chor'ii virtually requires the entire body to be destroyed, for they cannot be killed by system shock and organ failure like most biological organisms, and they possess an ability to isolate the functions of injured parts of their bodies, which heal at a rapid rate.
the Chor'ii come from a planet in the Thundercloud galaxy, and it is only a quirk of fate that keeps them there. their world is a frozen wastelend in the grips of an ice age, massive glacier sheets covering much of the globe. this ice age began shortly after the Chor'ii stumbled into an industrial revolution, and it is only the many pollutants and greenhouse gasses that have prevented the planet from becoming covered in a single sheet of ice. the massive ice flows are broken only by massive arcology cities where the planets 100 billion population live and work, and the massive mining operations that continue to strip the planet of any accessable resource. the planet is practically dead, with no land dwelling animal life larger than a rat, save for the Chor'ii. this is because the Chor'ii consumed every species that survived the start of the ice age. the Chor'ii are purely carnivorous, unable to consume plant matter. this caused a major crisis when the foodstocks ran out, one they solved in a very grisly manner. to prevent a complete riot and destruction of their society, they turned to the only source of meat left on the planet. themselves. at first, they merely processed the criminal element for consumption by the working classes, leaving the few remaining stocks of animal life for the elite. then they were forced to invoke the death penalty for even minor crimes, the convicted being sentenced in kangaroo courts and sent to the food plants. then they began to institute a eugenics program, with govermental agencies observing the birth of every infant for weakness, and only the strong being allowed to raised. the weak, the infirm, the sickly, the deformed were shipped to "cattle farms" to be raised like animals on a diet of the remaining rodent like pests, to be slaughtered and processed for food when they became large and old enough. and this was done with full knowledge by the populace. Cannabilism was nothing new to the Chor'ii, it had been common and accepted in their society long before this during the period when they were split into many tribes and nations. the ice age crisis merely elevated it to new levels.
the Chor'ii were able to keep this horrific practise going because they are prodigous breeders. a pregnant Chor'ii gestates a dozen embroys in stomach-wombs, before regurgitating the infants. during this time the mother goes without solid food for months. because their biological systems are so intermingled, it is impossible to chemically or surgically sterilize the population. so their population continues to grow, despite the horrific practices used to supply food to the population.
the Chor'ii obtained space travel after the ice age began, in hopes of alleviating their looming population problem. their first space ships were simple chemical and ion drive vessels, unable ot leave the system. with these, they began strip mining their solar system, to supply the arcologies below with needed metals and chemicals. they quickly progressed to atomic and then fusion drive vessels, which made the process all the easier. no terraformable planets existed in their solar system, so they saw no hope of easy resettlement. they considered construction of "Space ark" slowboat colony vessels, but had barely began to tacklee the issues of sustaining the crew and population for thousand year trips when their salvation arrived from outside their system. an exploratory vessel from a neighboring system arrived, possessing a more primative drive and technology, but with a valuable resource. Faster Than Light technology. a drive that could submerge the ship into "tachyonic" space where it could travel at speeds faster than light using standard drives. these newcomers, one of the numerous human worlds in the 3 galaxies, were welcomed at first. they were encouraged to set up trade relation, share technology, and so on. but things turned sour when the newcomers learned of the Totalitarian goverment of the Chor'ii, and what exactly it was they had been eating at all those welcome dinners. when the newcomers attempted to return to their ship, they were captured, and their ship was overrun and seized. it did not take the Chor'ii long to copy the FTL drive, and begin construction of a warfleet. after all, there was another inhabitable planet only a few light years away, and filled with very edible locals...
the Chor'ii turned their formidible industrial capacity to building ships and weapons. after a few years, the first scouting fleet was ready. all 4000 ships. the scouting force not only discovered the neighboring human planet, but several other worlds ripe for the taking. the Chor'ii warfleet, a hundred thousand strong, was well underway, and thousands of massive troopships were being built for moving the millions of infantry and vehicles that were planned for the first wave attack on the human world.
the next hundred years of Chor'ii history was one of conquest and consuption, taking dozens of worlds and strip mining them of their resources, both organic and otherwise. the massive troopships were pressed into duty to move masses of the Chor'ii population offworld. but even with the ships they possessed, they could only keep up with the rate of population expansion, not reduce it. and the colonists just took to breeding more in the open spaces and abundant food on the new worlds.
the CCW was the first to encounter the Chor'ii in their rush to claim the thundercloud, and it was good for the galaxy that it was they, not the TGE, that did so. the first two exploritory ships were obliterated by the chor'ii before they realized they were in chor'ii space, and the CCW locked down that area of space once they learned who they were dealing with and their danger to the galaxy as a whole. Chor'ii space has the unique distinction of being the only region of the 3 galaxies that the CCW has declared a complete interdiction on, with anyone crossing the border, for any reason, being destroyed on sight. all to prevent the Chor'ii from obtaining galactic standard technologies like contragravity drive, sheilds, effective energy weaponry, antimatter, ect. such technology combined with massive industrial capacity of the Chor'ii would be a threat to that entire arm of the thundercloud.

a primer, to get things started. i have to give credit to my friend Cray over at http://www.classicbattletech.com, it was one of his battletech ideas, savahnna, that inspired me to come up with the current Chor'ii Totality. though my result ultimately went a totally other way, since his was lost human colony and mine is totally alien race. i also cribbed from Niven's "a mote in gods eye" for certain concepts of Chor'ii biology, IE the "every system does several other functions" bit, only i took it to a further extreme. and after talismann pointed it out, i can see where my reading the poslen war novels by john ringo influenced my notes.
hopefully i'll get around to describing their ships ("what a peice of junk"), and their ground forces (very scary living waves of armed furry pirahna's..). i don't have RCC stats for them, since i'm not good at that aspect of game writing.

Chor'ii "Black Claw" Cruiser
"whatever egghead at research decided to label the 'black claw' cruisers are harmless apparently never met one in battle. or rather, met one of their hundred ship strong 'scouting squadrons'. individually these ships are worthless in a fight. but they never travel alone."

The Standard Warship of the Totality, with over 40,000 in service and more being launched daily. these vessels are of shoddy construction, badly designed, with minimal redundancies, and are practically useless compared to three galaxies standard vessels. they use Fusion drives, with more than half the volume of the vessel and more than 2/3rds the mass being the water used as the hydrogen fuel source. the drives are weak, and have maneuvering thrusters that barely deserve the name. their FTL drive is slow, a mere 10x the speed of light, as opposed to the 9000x velocities attainable by even the slowest CG drive craft. their armor is practically worthless, their armament is potent considering their level of technology but inefficient and somewhat inaccurate. their sensors are limited to light speed only, with no gravitic based sensing methods at all. they posses no FTL comms, are incapable of entering an atmosphere, and have living conditions so appalling that it belies description. no artificial gravity (the crew must use magnetic soled shoes or go about in free fall), minimal inertial dampening, and the life support barely operates. yet for all these faults, the Black Claw class is the most feared vessel around Chor'ii space.

[3] destruction of the Drive pod will leave the ship with no propulsion or power.
[4] the central spine is the structure that all the other components are attached to. destroying the central spine will cause the vessels modules to separate from each other, destroying the ship but leaving the modules intact. the Central Spine is protected by the bulk of the vessels modules, and is thus -4 to strike.
[5] the Radiator panels are built into the central spine and are used to eliminate waste heat. the panels are fragile, and easy to damage. they can be retracted when in combat or hazardous area, but the ship will begin to overheat to dangerous levels after only 4 hours.

Cargo: minimal. no extra cargo space provided beyond what is required for operation.

these 5 ball mounted laser turrets provide coverage for the forward half of the vessel. one is mounted at the tip of the tip of the living module, the other four mounted at equidistant points around its circumference.
Primary Purpose- Anti-missile/fighter
Secondary Purpose- Anti-ship
Damage- 1D6x10 MD.
Range- 600 kilometers
Rate of Fire- twice per melee.
Payload- all five cannon draw from the same capacitor bank, which holds enough power for 200 shots. the capacitor recharges at a rate of 4 shots per minute, but only when disconnected from the laser emplacements. disconnection/reconnection takes 1 minute to accomplish.
Notes: computer controlled for point defense. +2 to strike missiles and fighters.
Missile Pods:
these four launchers, mounted equidistant around the vessels circumfrance, posses 2 mass driver launcher each, firing fusion drive propelled missiles equipped with Fusion warheads.
Primary Purpose- Anti-warship
Secondary Purpose- Strategic Bombardment
Damage- 4D6x100 MD. (in an atmosphere, the blast radius is 3 miles)
Range- 500 km powered, 2000 km ballistic (effective aimed range at moving targets when ballistic).
Rate of Fire- Volleys of 1 or 2 per launcher, for a total volley of 8 missiles maximum. can be fired once per melee.
Payload- each launcher has 16 missiles.
Notes: once the missile has exceeded its powered range, it continues on in a ballistic path. ballisticly aimed missiles are -6 to strike. each missile has an MDC of 2)
Sensors/Equipment:
Radar- maximum range of 30,000 km. -40% to detect small objects (fighters, missiles) beyond 10,000 km.
Infrared tracking and scanning- passive IR camera's used to detect enemy ships by their heat signature. has an effective range of 6 light minutes. -20% to detect small objects.
Radio- directional, maximum effective range of 6 light minutes.
Life Support- sufficent air and stored food for 36 months of operation.

a lot of Atomic Rockets went into the Chor'ii fleet, part of my "phase world needs more primative ships" mentality. things like bulky fuel tanks, radiators, and the like are made obsolete by the handavium tech of the 3 galaxies proper, but for a race just getting into space travel that lacks such miracle technology, they're a big part.

[1] Depleting the MDC of the main body will destroy the living module, leaving the vessel uncontrolled.
[2] destruction of each fuel pod reduces the total fuel capacity by 4 months. destruction of all four fuel pods leaves the ship with no propulsion or power.
[3] destruction of the Drive pod will leave the ship with no propulsion or power.
[4] the central spine is the structure that all the other components are attached to. destroying the central spine will cause the vessels modules to separate from each other, destroying the ship but leaving the modules intact. the Central Spine is protected by the bulk of the vessels modules, and is thus -4 to strike.
[5] the Radiator panels are built into the central spine and are used to eliminate waste heat. the panels are fragile, and easy to damage. they can be retracted when in combat or hazardous area, but the ship will begin to overheat to dangerous levels after only 4 hours.

these 5 ball mounted laser turrets provide coverage for the forward half of the vessel. one is mounted at the tip of the tip of the living module, the other four mounted at equidistant points around its circumference.
Primary Purpose- Anti-missile/fighter
Secondary Purpose- Anti-ship
Damage- 1D6x10 MD.
Range- 600 kilometers
Rate of Fire- twice per melee.
Payload- all five cannon draw from the same capacitor bank, which holds enough power for 200 shots. the capacitor recharges at a rate of 4 shots per minute, but only when disconnected from the laser emplacements. disconnection/reconnection takes 1 minute to accomplish.
Notes: computer controlled for point defense. +2 to strike missiles and fighters.
Missile Pods:
these four launchers, mounted equidistant around the vessels circumfrance, posses 2 mass driver launcher each, firing fusion drive propelled missiles equipped with Fusion warheads.
Primary Purpose- Anti-warship
Secondary Purpose- Strategic Bombardment
Damage- 4D6x100 MD. (in an atmosphere, the blast radius is 3 miles)
Range- 500 km powered, 2000 km ballistic (effective aimed range at moving targets when ballistic).
Rate of Fire- Volleys of 1 or 2 per launcher, for a total volley of 8 missiles maximum. can be fired once per melee.
Payload- each launcher has 16 missiles.
Notes: once the missile has exceeded its powered range, it continues on in a ballistic path. ballisticly aimed missiles are -6 to strike. each missile has an MDC of 2)
Sensors/Equipment:
Radar- maximum range of 30,000 km. -40% to detect small objects (fighters, missiles) beyond 10,000 km.
Infrared tracking and scanning- passive IR camera's used to detect enemy ships by their heat signature. has an effective range of 6 light minutes. -20% to detect small objects.
Radio- directional, maximum effective range of 6 light minutes.
Life Support- sufficent air and stored food for 36 months of operation.

a lot of Atomic Rockets went into the Chor'ii fleet, part of my "phase world needs more primative ships" mentality. things like bulky fuel tanks, radiators, and the like are made obsolete by the handavium tech of the 3 galaxies proper, but for a race just getting into space travel that lacks such miracle technology, they're a big part.

several hundred? thats a scouting force. an invasion fleet would be a few thousand protecting a couple hundred "den mother" transports. maybe only a dozen or so if your colony's population is not very big. then the hundreds of den mothers don't arrive till after conquest, to drop off the millions of chor'ii colonists.
my goal was to make a warship that the average 3G's starfighter could destroy, and i think i pulled it off. you need several dozen to even hope to hurt the typical 3G's warship, and dozens of dozens to trap said warship since a 3g's warship can out manuver the Chor'ii, out run them, and outlast them. thats sort of the theme with the Chor'ii. "everything counts in large amounts"
by the way, for referance, a chor'ii ship would resemble something like This, only with a fusion drive and big fuel tanks instead of a pusherplate.

actually, the listed "market value" is only how much you'd get selling it to a scrapyard for base metals. kinda a joke about how pathetic the ships are.
the Chor'ii spend as much on one of their ships as any 3G's nation would for a cruiser. its just the Chor'ii aren't limited by economy in the same way, and have a much lower tech base. as tech advances, it gets cheaper. a 3G's power probably could build one of these for a few million creds of resources. its just not worth doing, since a slightly larger outlay of money can get you much more effective ships. the furry little Pirahna's have basically run their economy into the ground, but since its a state based on something other than capitalism (really more of a totalitarian socialist political and economic structure, with the goverment as the sole provider of everything based on the work provided to the goverment.) it doesn't matter to them much. they basically are consuming everything they come across. asteroids and planets are strip mined for food and resources to build more ships and cities. and they have to keep expanding to supply the ever expanding populations created by dropping colonies. since now each colony needs more food, more resources. and at a rate faster than they can strip mine them. and the process destroys the planets in the process, so they have to find new ones.
a sort of 'biological grey goo scenario'.
thus why the CCW has set up "containment" around their space. not only to keep them from getting advanced tech, but because then the Chor'ii will fail to get the resources they need from expansion, and will eventually collapse when they can no longer support such a huge empire. then the survivors will have to discover a better way to live.

Yeah, and if somebody ever found a profit to be had in Chor'ii hides(kinda hard, since there's so many of them---oversupply), the CCW might find itself with the awkward question...protect these cannibals? Or let the Splugorth/T'Zee/whoever act as wholesale population control?

Although the T'Zee would have the capability to be a good ready stock for them. Extremely large population. Now just toss the gene splicers in there to modify the little pirahnas into say something large and powerful along with their already sterling personalities and you end up with something even scarrier.

Yeah! They could strip of planet in short order. maybe if they get too close some worlds stop communicatnig with their central government and when a ship goes out there it just vanishes. That would require a larger task force and maybe they might be able to get someone back to start the forces in mobilzing.

Just be happy they don't seem to have magic capability yet. Imagine the damage if they could learn how to open Rifts to other planets/dimensions. That would make a good adventure... you have to stop the Chor'ii ship with the shifter they kidnapped from one of the worlds they Rifted before they can get him home and use him to open portals to new planets.

Somehow I think kidnapping a shifter would be easier then taking on the Naruni so they could ever get one of those things.

True. But there is that small chance (infintismal, I know) that they find one unguarded for enough time for them to actually use it. I agree about the shifter. Although they might eat him before they find out he'd open more food and resources to them then just their ships.

I figure they're smart enough to steal some of the library info they run across and read it and would end up eventually coming across the concept of shifters and probably want to have their people keep an eye out for one. Though yea I'm sure the shifter might have to do some fast talking to convince them he needs all his limbs and digits to cast his spells.

hopefully, once finals are over, i can finish transcribing and expanding on the "Den mother" transport and the related "striking claw" troop ships/landers. lets just say i've thought about how how big an undertaking the conquest of a planet like earth is.
i've also got some notes on weaponry, which will help put the above in perspective.

alright, part 1 of the Chor'ii ground forces segment. first they have to get to the planet....

General Mot: "sir, Space Command has detected a Chor'ii invasion fleet inbound from the outer system, we expect them to make orbit within 3 months.
President Dref: "how large?"
General Mot: "at least 200 Cruisers, and a dozen of their troop Transports."
President Dref: "i trust our protectors from the Consortium will be able to hold off anything those dozen ships can deploy, they have an entire division after all."
General Mot: "the CCW garrison is only a brigade in size."
President Dref: "i know that. it took a year of wrangling to get them her to defend our world, didn't it? and i pulled it off. Gamaron is safe from any invader. why would you think otherwise?"
General Mot: "because i read the Kl'kn intel reports! our world has about a billion people you stiff necked buerecrat! each of those transports is carrying nearly a million troops! and thats probably just the first wave."

Chor'ii "Striking Fang" Troop Lander Transport
A massive Conical vessel designed to carry the enormous conscript armies to targets marked for inclusion into the Chor'ii Totality. the Infantry are transported barracks style in 10 massive cargo bays, which provides little comfort, little more than a bunk for each conscript, packed in tightly with little elbow room. the passengers spend their entire trip crammed into this space, sometimes for months. as pathetic as they are living conditions areslightly better than those of the Chor'ii arcologies, a fact that makes such travel workable for the Chor'ii.
the Striking Fang has only limited drives and fuel, as they are designed merely to move armies from orbit to ground, and then return after the campaign with their holds fileld with the bounty of the newly held planet, although many Striking Claws are turned into housing for their loads of soldier-colonists.
Type: Troop lander
Class: Striking Fang
Crew: 300. 30 officers, 200 Loyalty Enforcers, 70 general crew.
Passengers: 5000 Conscripts. (roughly one company), although when used as civilian transports over 10,000 Chor'ii are crammed in, literally wall to wall.

the Denmother Transport is a common sight in Chor'ii space, particulalry at the Orbital Elevator stations around the Chor'ii homeworld. in order to keep up with the populations rapid growth, which doubles itself roughly every 80 standard years, over 70 Denmothers must depart daily. a number that the Chor'ii are almost able to acheive when combined with the need to crew its massive fleet of cruisers.

Chor'ii "Striking Fang" Troop Lander Transport
A massive Conical vessel designed to carry the enormous conscript armies to targets marked for inclusion into the Chor'ii Totality. the Infantry are transported barracks style in 10 massive cargo bays, which provides little comfort, little more than a bunk for each conscript, packed in tightly with little elbow room. the passengers spend their entire trip crammed into this space, sometimes for months. as pathetic as they are living conditions areslightly better than those of the Chor'ii arcologies, a fact that makes such travel workable for the Chor'ii.
the Striking Fang has only limited drives and fuel, as they are designed merely to move armies from orbit to ground, and then return after the campaign with their holds fileld with the bounty of the newly held planet, although many Striking Claws are turned into housing for their loads of soldier-colonists.

these things would scare the heck out of any world in the 3 galaxies, except for maybe the K!zon.
my thread about the issues of scale was directly caused by the same thought process that designed these ships.
the 3G's isn't much for conquering planets the hard way, at least according to Braden. i can live with that. i mean, the TGE is likely to just glass a continent and cowe the world into submission, the CCW is likely to either use diplomacy and economic incentives to bring around a planet, or drop specforces in to forment a popular uprising.
the Chor'ii aren't interested in uplifting populations, and nuclear devistation just leaves the world less useful. so the only way to pull it off is to get enough boots on the ground.
that it helps solve their population problem is a good side effect, even if they do need to move over 30 Denmother's worth of passengers a day just to keep up with growth.

they're not quite as dangerous on the ground.....well, compared to a 3G's military of the same #'s.
they don't cart around planes for CAS. or artillery. or tanks.
just infantry. Chor'ii tactics look something like the beginning of Enemy at the gates, complete with "loyalty enforcers" machine gunning down any Conscript that retreats, though in urban war they tend to break up alot.
a ground campaign using the Chor'ii is best run as either a "Futile last stand" one off (not much fun), or as a guerilla war campaign with the survivors of the planetary defense fighting to make the planet too tough for the Chor'ii to hold.

this was designed to be compatable with my own take on the universe.
Canon ranges are pathetically poor, based on too much star wars and not enough reality. there is no reason for ships to close to spitting distance before engaging in combat, when their weapons would be able to hit targets much farther out in a semi-realistic setting.
so i boost ranges to reasonable levels.
and to prevent combat being just ships sitting around blasting each other (and to get rid of the other big flaw in the setting), i created house rules to impliment accelleration based movement, so ships no longer move at an unrealistic crawl. (seen here
frankly, i suspect that most GM's just ignored the canon speeds and ranges and just winged it.
if you'd prefer to drop it down to canon type ranges, feel free. especially if that helps you adjust it to whatever space houserules you have.

The thing is I could see the weapon projection passing thru many of the little ships. I can see them being swept out of existance by the droves. Especially if faced with say a major combatant like a Protector. Area effect weapons would be a huge boon against the Chor'ii.

conversion for canon (or from canon to your system)?
For my part, I simply multiply space speed and ranges by 10.

actually i'm getting lucky this semester.
one i don't have to take because i did too well in class (Computer Lit...i work in a computer lab, i'd hope i know the basics...), one other is just a paper which i'm finishing up this weekend, been collecting my last few sources as we speak), a Teacher portfolio (very simple, mostly just orginizing what i already have), and a take home exam for ancient isreal, which i have most of a week to do before it needs to be turned in.
