Necron/Necrol?

Unread post by Big Red »

I received Three Galaxies, 2nd printing as part of my Christmas Grab Bag. I'd looked at it several times a while back and had noticed lots of mentions of the Necrons, and had read a few threads that mentioned them. When I got my book, though, they were called Necrols. Any idea what happened between the 1st and 2nd printing?

Because Necrons is copyrighted by War Hammer. My bad since I don't even play the system I found out after the book was published and I notified Palladium. They changed the name to avoid any legal entanglements.

Good call ;)
Though to be fair, the REAL nomeclature for the necro's in WH40k is Necrotyr... but I digress :D

In THIS case it was the smart thing to do to change the name as preventitive measure. In the case of NightSPAWN (by CJ Carrlella)...that was just stupid!
It had NOTHING to do with McFARTlane's POS comic, and heck, even the name wasn't actionable. Yet I know some shiester of a lawyer woulda taken Todd-munchers case to prosecute *shakes head*
America, land of the law-suit... I am SOOOOOOO glad Canada hasn't descended into that pit of madness...yet :?

I figured it was something along those lines. Thanks for clearing it up.

Yeah I like Necrons too, but what can I say? Someone beat me too it. Names are always hard to come up with and I wanted something along the lines of "death" for these guys and I remembered necro. Add an "n" and wow i had a name I wanted that I thought sounded cool.

I don't play warhammer 40k, but I grabbed a free magazine from a game shop that had these cool looking robots/borg things on the cover. Man I was disappointed when I saw they were called Necrons!! So I called Palladium and they made the change for the second printing. Even though the names are the same I think they're different enough, but people can be picky about their I.P.'s so why take a chance.

Gamesworkshop are notorious for being inconsistant about what they will or won't sue over.

In THIS case; better safe than sorry. (See ealier post on my thoughts about I/P's and lawyers).

That is very true. British learned their lessons from TSR early on. Can't say I blame them.

The real question is, will we ever see Necrols get enslaved by godlike beings from within the stars, and end up being imprisoned in living metal bodies to act as the undying minions of their new masters, doomed to be forever imprisoned within vast silent tomb ships until they're needed in battle?

And I'd better run now, before I get sued for copyright infringement :)
