The diagrams on the Ikarus's panels during pre-fold showed space warping to shorten the distance between point A and B.
But there is still a travel distance with an effect that looks like hyperspace.
Sooo... the space fold doesn't seem to bring Point B next to Point A (ala Battlestar Galactica and Stargate) and the ship hops between them. It seems that the points drawn closer and the ship needs to spend time travelling between those points?
That would also account for Macross when Vermillion Squad was aboard Breetai's ship. They spent ages in foldspace.
If you watch Shadow Chronicles again, they're in fold space for 'a while'. Because yes, it basically 'folds' space partially, to pull the other point closer. It's essentially a version of space warping. And they were in fold long enough that they were able to change their defold point while mid-fold, as well, from sensor readings of the space up ahead. Up until Shadow Chronicles, I didn't think that possible on either count (sensors in fold or changing defold point).
