Magic Staff and wands

Unread post by ghost2020 »

Anyone use magic staves and wands in Palladium Fantasy?
I'm not seeing a list of them in the main book, nuts, are they in another one? If so, which one. Any NPCs have any magic staves?

I would suppose one could just attach properties from either or both the Magic Weapon properties and Magic Rings list. No more three for a staff and only one per wand.

Look in the Rifts Book of Magic or Rifts England.

There isn't really a section on it in PF canon, nor do they get used much as far as I can tell, in official scenarios. They certainly don't exist in the quantity or style of something like D&D. The only specific one I can think of off hand is Artoa's Magical Wand from Tombs of Gersidi.

There are Crystal Wands and Crystal Staves in Island at the Edge of the World, which are very useful. Also, Millenium Wands are presented in RIFTS: England, and are usable in PF courtesy of the Millenium Tree described in Eastern Territory.

Yeah...Rifter 19...d'oh!
Cool I'll check that.

I'll check Rifts BoMa but would like to keep as non-rifts as possible.

There is something canon for it. I believe its in Old Ones, but I can't find the page right now. It gives rules on how an alchemist can create wands and staffs, and has costs too. Wands can have one spell three times a day, and staffs can have multiple spells I'm not sure how many times per day. If anyone can find the page number that would be great.

The Mysteries of Magic manuscript contained information about wands. Personally, if I'm looking for such, though, I like Rifts: England, especially the herbal magic section.

Then again making one up for PF takes about 30 seconds.

Wizard Staff: 6' Long wood with arcane markings and etchings. (500 SDC) Damage: 2d6, +1 to strike and parry, (double to supernatural -demons, vampires, dragons, etc.)

Stored P.P.E.: 50-80 (or whatever seems appropriate)
Spells in staff:
-Globe of Daylight
-Call Lightning
-Fire Bolt
-Detect Magic
(1d4+1 other non-offensive/defensive spells, mainly utilitarian spells)

P.P.E. is for the spells contained in the staff, and cannot be used by wizard, and the P.P.E. will recharge itself in 24 hours, or if a wizard is able to 'energize' the staff with his own P.P.E. or from that of a willing donor(s).

Spells function at level of wizard using the staff. Staff can be used by wizards, mystics and any class that uses P.P.E. to fuel spells.

Ok, if we keep this up, we'll end up writing a RIFTER article by accident! :)

They have Crystal Staves and Wands in one of the PF Books as well. I just don't remember what it's called.

Island at the End of the World and you need psionics to make them work. We have
spells to make tailsmans and amulets, and necromancer can make staffs and scepters,
so these spells I'm seeing here just make sense. Keep them up guys.

I didn't realize you needed Psionics to get them to work. I have the book, but I guess I should read it again :P

I didn't know Marines knew how to read. :D

That's cheating.

Marines don't play fair. Largely because they can't read... much less understand... the rules.

I'm safe. Marines also can't read maps. Why do you think they rely on the Navy to drive? ;-)

Back on topic::

As mentioned earlier there are some Crystal Staves in the Island at the Edge of the World book (pg96), but also as stated, you need to be a psionisist to tap into its power.

There are some magic qualities that could be placed onto a staff or wand as found in both the main book and Western Empire. Just remember that a max of 3 properties/abilities per staff, rod, wand, etc.

There is also one found in the Library of Bletherad book, and it is a rune staff. So more could exist.

I have done as ghost2020 shown earlier, for one of my Players before to find.
Just took a basic staff (Quarterstaff in this case) added some magical properties to it, and viola! A new Magical staff for the mage:
6' long staff 2D6 Damage. SDC: 350
PPE: 60
Stored Spells:
- Fireball
- Cloud of Smake
- Ignite Fire
also had the property of making the weilder Impervious to fFlames (as per the spell)

It is kind of simple really, and even the basic staff, wand, twig, can be handy when put to the test.

BUT for a really good read on Wand magic, you should check out RIFTER #19. Even contains some simple rules and guidelines for creating wands.
We may be through with the past, but the past is not through with us.
- the Book

another year come and gone without a PF release. :(
