Well, I would think the stone would have to be somewhat sesembling flesh in shape at least. A Statue or fossile, not just a random piece of stone.

Ok as per the level 8 spell the caster can turn up to 50 lbs per level of stone to flesh (I.E. The neighborhood medusa just turned your character into stone)
But could it be used on normal stone just to freak out your enemy or in case of impending starvation it would be a handy way to get grub.

No, the hunk of stone had to be flesh before it was stone. So the spell should be called, "Stone Back to Flesh".

I would tend to allow "Restore Stone to Flesh", probably regardless of the stone weight. More 'creative' options would be limited by caster level. Maybe alignment too. I'd definitely rule that the target stone in question was an intact piece, like a specific stone in the wall/pillar, not just 400# of that one huge castle wall stone.

That's how I would do it; it dispels Flesh to Stone, or turns an appropriate amount of stone into flesh.

If cast on a stone golem, I would say you now have a flesh golem.

Under Warlock spells it even has a combination of spells for the purpose of making clay creatures into living simulacrum.
So make an iron golem that looks like someone and then turn it to flesh. Unless the standard invocation is different from the earth warlock version.

As for casting Stone to Flesh on a boulder, I'd allow it. Except since the boulder has no particular structure, it'd basically just be a giant wad of meat, bone, sinew, blood, and mashed up organ-type structures. Largely edible, but gross looking. It might even sprout hair in internal and external patches.

Or your GM could just simplify it such that casting Stone to Flesh on an unstructured hunk of rock would result in a giant mass of SPAM.

Of course, a stone is way more dense than flesh...A 250 lb rock takes up way less space than 250 lbs of meat, so you could have the incredible expanding wad of meat!

Makes me think of one of the Edgar Rice Burroughs Barsoom books...There was this ever-growing meat-thing in one of them. Anyone else remember that? That's what I think of when Stone to Flesh is cast on generic rock.
