Megaversal undead hunters: Who is best?
I thought I asked this question some time ago, but I seem to have misplaced it. Let's say that your typical Dead Reign game has taken a bizarre turn. New, even stranger undead start showing up, they seem to be like zombies but act different, even intelligent or twisted. All the zombies from miles around seem to be answering a gigantic zombie moan in one direction. And they're gathering in St. Louis by the arch. They're not acting like they normally do, it's as if something is guiding them.
"Thinkers aren't usually this organized, something is commanding these things! We lost a lot of good people trying to get this intel, sneaking through sewers and using a concerned Mock Zombie as a guide. There he was, some older Chinese guy in ceremonial robes, surrounded by the weirdest and BIGGEST zombies we've ever seen. They called him Chao Su Shen. The undead rallied around him, like cultists. He didn't look like he had a scratch on him, but he was controlling them! We've been around a long time to know there's no such thing as magic. But if there was a logical explanation, we were at a loss to it. He said terms we've never heard before. Gift of the White Tiger. Lybokja. Murder-Wraiths. Titan Juicers. Yema. Revenants. From what we heard, he said in a few days, he was going to march every zombie through a door to...another world? Something about the Solstice coming up. And when it does, millions of those things were going to go away. My gut reaction was, that's a good thing, isn't it? If something could make the zombies go away, then maybe it'll be a chance to make this city safe again, maybe even a little slice of normal. But millions of those zeds marching on something else? I dunno, I mean...it's too BIG for us. It's not our problem if they go to another place away from here, is it? And that's when that...you're gonna think I got into some bad peyote, but that's when IT attacked. It looked like a...a zombie pterodactyl! It came screeching at us, and that's when the wierd zombies with the high tech sci-fi gear stuck on them charged. I've never SEEN anything move that fast! We high-tailied it outta there and back into the sewers. That's when the flash flood hit us. I was the only one able to make it out, and I could I heard my friends behind me being attacked by those super-zombies! They called him 'squishy' as they...they said they were making a wish! I KNOW it sounds nuts, but I swear it's the truth! I don't know what we can do against this, or if we even should. Can you help us?"
Excerpt from Johnny Sexton, Missouri Militia.
That's the setting. An Enlightened Immortal from Mystic China is using his influence over the undead to gather them into a devastating army. He's also gathered some of the most devastating undead from across the Megaverse to aid him. Your usual players and classes simply aren't equipped or experienced enough to handle this new threat. What you need are specialists, beings that have trained for this, or are crazy enough to buck the odds and take on this menace head on. This needs something special. What do you recommend?
The Zombie Killing Maniac sounds fun, but if you had the chance to assemble or even play as the best beings made specifically against this army, what would you wish to use? If I fail to name them here, please chime in and name your own nominees!
True Atlantean Undead Slayers
Sea Inquisitors
Demon Quellers and Demon Hunters, from Mystic China, Rifts Japan and The Rifter
Hunter from Tribes of the Moon, Rifters 4 & 5
Slayers from Mystic Russia
Cold-Blooded from Rifts Mercenaries Adventures. I name this because they're quasi-undead, naturally hunt undead and those that control them, have great healing and their power punches and kicks do triple damage to the supernatural.
If you were running this, or played in this campaign, what would you nominate as the most fun, if not best character to take on hordes of the undead like this? To use a video game analogy, sometimes it's fun to play the equivalent of God Mode or Quad Damage with players able to wade through the ordinary zombies, facing the final boss challenges at the end! If you had the chance, what would you want to use?

Ahh nust, I forgot about Wormwood! Holy Terrors and Apok would be fun too! And ohhh yeah, you could have fun with the right combos in HU. How about a Lanotaur Hunter or Riathenor as well?

If its going to be a straight up fight, a player group doesn't have a prayer unless it is composed of either characters who can perpetually fly and fire energy bolts, or are gods. With odds of a million to one no one has a prayer. Now a few hundred super powered undead killing machines might have some prayer of a chance if well organized and equipped.

Well, there might be some black op stealth as well, or using the tanks of the group to lure them in, then flank them or go after the head Immortal. Who knows? But I think the possibility would be fun!

Re: Megaversal undead hunters: Who is best?
Don't forget to include PF Undead Hunters, from Yin-Sloth Jungles, here as well. They might not pack MD armor and weapons, but those are irrelevant in the SDC DR world. What they do have, however, is a vast repertoire of magic, and the ability to learn any spell ever made, rendering them capable of annihilating vast numbers without even getting close. A couple of them sprinkled in with the other higher-tech hunters would add a great punch. There are a couple of particular spells that, if learned and used properly, could wipe out pretty much the entire not-so-intelligent portion of the army by themselves. Heck, teach them Fly as an Eagle, and combined with being at a super-nexus to draw PPE from, you've got azazel's aforementioned hunter "who can perpetually fly and fire energy bolts" (Call Lightning is already known).

One Mulka.
Re: Megaversal undead hunters: Who is best?
Sheesh, could you imagine if the only thing that could kill a Mulka is a zombie child? One problem...how do you double unlimited P.P.E. at the time of death? How does that not become a doorway for Brulyx or the Old Ones to wake up and come in?

Seeing as how the Mulka are pretty much immune to everything, I doubt it would come up.

Maybe, but has anyone ever tried throwing a zombie kid at a Mulka?
Bob Herzog from KoDT put it best: HOODY HOO! http://www.facebook.com/manyfacesofdave
Re: Megaversal undead hunters: Who is best?
Okay, let's say for the sake of argument, the Mulka can't get directly involved for fear of either retribution from a greater force or risk of blowing up the planet. So the kid's the one assembling the force, not actively on the hunt. Let's recap what we have so far:
True Atlantean Undead Slayers
Sea Inquisitors
Demon Quellers and Demon Hunters
Hunter from Tribes of the Moon
Slayers from Mystic Russia
Cold-Blooded from Rifts Mercenaries Adventures
Holy Terror
Apok
Lanotaur Hunter

Golem Immortal
Riathenor, perhaps a Dagotte leading a small hunting party
Anyone else have any thoughts?

There have been a lot of great ideas here. Anyone else have any more possible zombie stompers? Perhaps even a Eugenics resurrected corpse of a deceased soldier being turned into a zombie slayer that actually blends in with the other undead?

Ubiquity wrote:Well, this may not be the best hunter, but as far as sheer destructive/damage power just grab the nearest HU character with APS:fire and have him go supernova. With a 700 foot radius of affect it is brutal. Using my groovy RIFTS calculator (everyone should have one), and assuming the hero is hovering over the area, you are looking at 1,538,600 square feet. Give each zombie 3 square feet of space and you are looking at doing a minimum of 100 points of damage to nearly 513K zombies! With some support troops to cover his back and a mop up team waiting in the wings, that is a lot of BBQ going on. Perhaps not logistically feasible but oh so much fun to envision...
Who knows, maybe if a rift is created at the arch when this happens, it could be, in your time line, what causes the St. Louis Arch rift to become permanent...

tHAT WASN'T CONVERSION...
That was Sarcasm
Besides, all I said was that he was the bestest at killing (and eatting zombies)... I never mentioned a system (D20, Cyberpunk, WW, or PB for example) nor did I give him stats.
BUUUUUUUUTTTTT....
This has made me actually interested in the discussion so as to contribute for reals, and the Mercer joke Has given me a Quasi-related idea! Hows about a Super with the Original "Super Consumption" super power from Rifter (Not that HaCk Sawed PC version in PU1). You could eat and eat and eat zombie after zombie aftta flesh eatting zombie and you could eat/swallow 3 or more at one time, even at earily levels. 3 per attack, 5 attacks per melee... 60 zombies per min, 3600 zombies per hour... 36,000 Z's over a ten hour zombie eatting work day That'sa whole small subburban city... Add in the "Life Leech" so as to actually Get something from the consumption...
Or a super with Bio-Ghost + Intangible...
But The Bestest Undead slayers are the Chi-Masters from China with their INSTA-Kill weeping beans of life... Each bean will kill every zombie in the radius and make the area smell fresh as flowers as an added bonus. Chi-masters are just Deadly as sin to zombies, and vamps. Only a Lybokja would stand up to them.
But my pick for Best Racial hunter is
a Nightspawn. Tough as they are, it is their Talents that make them great hunters since after just a few months of fighting Zombies, they could create Specialized Talents Just for killing their prey...Reshapers would be about as good at fighting Zombies as their NS cousins (they gain less talents and are generally sooo high level to start that they would take forever to reach a level where they could get to develope such a talent).

I actually have a question on this. If someone was a Eugenics hero, and was the Reanimated Corpse variety, would they have any PPE? Would zombies ignore this character, allowing the character to just wade through the undead masses at will without being attacked? The book doesn't state if the character would have any PPE, but being a reanimated corpse I can't see why they would. Just thought I'd post the question to see if anyone had any thoughts.
IMO the DR zombies would attack such a character (if said character does have PPE), because they're not your typical undead zombies. The DR zombies are esentially undead walking vacuums trying to get as much PPE as they can and sending it off to their master.
Something to keep in mind: vampires have PPE (I also believe all the undead in LotD2 have PPE listed as well). I haven't read the entry of Reanimated Corpse yet. Would they be similar to the Phoenix-converted juicers from Juicer Uprisings?

STAR CHILD from rifts england. they are a creature of pure light, can fly , shoot pure light beams out that count as magic, if they are getting whooped on they can go ftl and come back when healed up. yeah star child is the perfect vamp hunter for sure and not bad at other undeads.

Re: Megaversal undead hunters: Who is best?
I would say either a Nightspawn or an Apok. They make everyone else look like wussies.

Doesn't the amok mask die when it leaves wormwood??

Nope.

I'm surprised it took so long for someone to mention a Night-Spawn/Bane. Those things are like genetically programmed to be BA undead killers. Who ordered the meat grinder?!

Re: Megaversal undead hunters: Who is best?
You want a mage of some sort, so you can get 'Blood Ward' from TtGD, because every group of undead hunters needs to have a HF to the undead they are fighting. And amulet spell, so that you can have the ability to not be touched. (yah they can throw rocks or shoot you...but only the thinkers....)
The rules are not a bludgeon with which to hammer a character into a game. They are a guide to how a group of friends can get together to weave a collective story that entertains everyone involved. We forget that at our peril.

The magic in TTGD was the inspiration for what would have been the Magic in the Original Dead Reign Book.

Gardener from Splicers, nothing says survive a zombie apocalypse like ever replenishing fortifications
Re: Megaversal undead hunters: Who is best?
As a secondary, and I said this in another similar thread, a Blayze from Scraypers. Supersonic flight, SN strength Super Energy expulsion to burn em, and PPE so dang low I don't know if they would even register as alive to DR Zed.

Re: Megaversal undead hunters: Who is best?
Greetings!
Here is my thinking:
1) Nightbane SORCERER! All the Bad-@$$ power of a NB & SPELLS!
2) Royal Frilled Dragon Hatchlings: Psi + Magic + Powerhouse = WIN !
3) An Army of Skelebots:
A; No PPE to give them away.
B; NO FEAR! IMMUNE TO HF and Mind Control!
C; Thermal Vison senses No Body Heat + Human Form in Motion = *KILL* actions from the Skelebot everytime!
4) Rifts SA Neo-Human: Psionics with a VAST scale of TK terror!
5) Psi-Stalkers:
A; Senses the Undead from long range !!!
B; Instinctive Enemies !
C; Psionics.
D; Really Good Bonuses!
6) A Pride (2,000) of my own Race/RCC; The Grahl (Humaniod Hyeanas) ! The Undead of Dead Reign are described as NOT passing on Zombie-hood by infection so my Grahl are free to FEAST! The smell of Dead Reign Earth may cuase you to gag, but it will cause my Grahl to *DROOL* ! Let the Grand Hunt begin !!!

Not the most effective. They would be eventually overrun and destroyed.

Re: Megaversal undead hunters: Who is best?
before i picked up the new H.U. book my opinion was the sea inquisitor, that has changed. i hero with invulneribility cant be hurt a hero with night stalking cant be turned into undead. either one of these powers alone is qhite unbalancing ina game based around well "tactical flanking maneuvers". the ability to go toe to toe with a hoard instead of finding an escape........ I think would make for a better experience than just runn..err,flanking yea flanking maneuver thats it.

Re: Megaversal undead hunters: Who is best?
Bit of a necro, sure, but on the Dead Reign Forums, it's appropriate.
I've been dabbling with the Heroes Unlimited Eugenic Hero tables for creating frankensteinian bio-monstrousities, and it seems to me you could BUILD a class of humans(Homo Necrophagi?) optimized for hunting and eating Undead...sort of a superhuman carrion-vulture or Psi-Stalker for Zombies.
Some of the features I've plugged into the (WIP) Vulture-Folk would be:
*Carrion Eater(It's one of the existing traits possible for Eugenic Heroes, along with 'Reanimated Corpse' under possible origins)
*Advanced Sense of Smell
*Maxed-out SDC and heightened Armor Rating
*Regeneration---Up the yin-yang, because you don't want to permamently lose parts of yourself(of course, some high-rank Zombie lord might decide it also makes you the hamburger that keeps on giving, but hey, that should encourage you to just up your survival of the fittest game).
*Amped Speed and Strength(Superhuman rating at least)----Because3 what you can't beat to pieces, you wanna be able to outrun.
*Disease Resistance(because you're lunching on corpses). Come to think of it, have Psi-Stalker-like baldness makes perfect sense when you're constantly sticking your face in rotting meat.
*Circadian Rythyms---Pick your own sleep cycle
*Natural Weapons---Big teeth at the very least, and a distendable jaw...You wanna be able to break bones(to get to the marrow..yum!)
*Acid Blood(yeah, the zombies may scratch you, but it will cost them)
When I finish the Homo Necrophagi, I'll post the complete package, but you get the idea.
The living dead out to eat you? Eat them....

I would think a maybe a mutant with some disease resistance and firing energy bolts with the Mega-hero add-on has a good chance at cleansing creeps from the Earth.

There's a recent book series(Ex-Heroes) that deals with a superhero world that's been overrun by zombies(exes), with the remaining superhero mutants guarding the last enclaves of living humans from the undead. It's very much in this vein.

Ganka.
They have obscene SDC, are virtually immortal and breed like bunnies.
In a few years, you won't have a Zombie problem anymore (although you may have a Ganka problem).

Re: Megaversal undead hunters: Who is best?
nightstalking power so you can't be turned into undead. invulneribity for the strength and sdc. multiple selves for backup. flight:wingless for travel and finally energy expulsion fire, you know to burn stuff.since i gave this character 2 major powers and 3 minor powers might aswell make him/her a rogue scientist to hopefully find a cure.
