Feel free to add and expand upon in detail! We'd like to hear your ideas.
You might find yourself expanding on a few of them and making a mini-webbook/phamplet, complete with stats on hardware, races, and OCCs specific to a timeline, or organization traveling between world lines.

Tough on the sea-life though...
Then somebody suggests they might get more mileage using plastic fish, and a whole controversy erupts over the ethics of plastic fish punishment, and the use of tofu-based crab for shellfish/crustacean-based beatings. Some cultures on the planet resort to stonings with clams(with the worst murderers getting a Giant Clam lobbed at them by hydraulic catapult).

wow......
Yes...it didn't help that that particular world's first interdimensional contact was with a world with a similar policy, only using pies.
Then there was the world where crimes were punished by putting the offender in a pen with a dog...to use Apollo's scale, a jaywalker gets an hour with a half-blind, toothless poodle, while a mass-murderer gets a day in a pit of hungry wolves.

Apollo wrote:Another planet gives punishment in the form of various tortures. These tortures come from a small box, glass on one side, that shows pictures and sounds when fed strange signals from deep space. Apparently, this box they found is called a Telly Vision. In this case, jaywalkers are forced to watch something called Today, while a serial killer gets a guy named Glenn Beck.
What manner of criminal gets forced to watch 'The Bachlorette'?

Re: Alternate Dimensions
I’m trying out a new dimensional classification system:
Alterverse Pelican
Across the lands, there is legend of a great city that held the wealth of a hundred empires. Many have gone seeking it and had their lives ruined in the process. The problem is that it only appears every one hundred years and appears for only three days before it and everything inside the city limits fades, to return the next century past. Now the one hundred years are up and the city is back. And the clock is ticking…

Alterverse Seahorse
In the year 2050, humanity succeeded in creating “black magic” via the manipulation of exotic particles. Soon after humanity managed to create the first colony on the surface of the moon, dubbing it Gorgon. But years of black magic weaken the planet’s natural safety nets, allowing for all sorts of disasters that ravaged the planet for decades. They included micro black holes, earthquakes, and hundreds of other calamities that batter the world. Only the people of the Gorgon Colony survived. It is now 2100, and it appears the disasters have died down. Gorgon then sent down a team of explores/soldiers the see how bad the damage was and what horrors have been born from the aftermath.

The American Presidency is determined by national lottery. cabinet posts by scratch game cards. Thus, convenience stores are effectively voting centers.

Re: Alternate Dimensions
Apollo wrote:Two peaceful planets in neighboring star systems have a cordial, yet strange relationship. These civilizations are not advanced enough to have regular contact, so instead, they've taken to providing entertaining shows for each other. One planet will send off an armada of ships to attack the other with all their latest weaponry. When this 50-year journey is up, and the crews come out of stasis, the recipient's reaction is not one of fear or anger, but rather, excitement and glee that it's time for another show. The invading fleet then does its best to provide a memorable spectacle, attacking and wreaking as much destruction as possible. The defenders put up a fierce defense and try to minimize the damage, because after all, it will soon be their turn to send off an attack fleet and they don't want to keep their friends waiting by taking too much time to rebuild.
I can see both civilizations setting up their societies so that cities are surrounded by hundreds of small, inobtrusive rural communities with massive underground bunkers and connecting mass transit systems, while the cities are guady, overblown confections of showy technology and plenty of EM emission sources. Likewise, military bases and a certain percentage of the above ground industrial sites are designed to DRAW fire, or are constructed to provide not only effective defensive qualities and boobytrapped approaches, but plenty of spectacle(bridges that serve no other purpose than to blow up, faslse buildings made of flammable materials, and, even though save fusion and other eco-friendly power sources have replaced fossil fuels, plenty of tanks and pipelines of flammable liquids and gases for the big booms.
It's understood that when the invading fleet approaches, the urban population takes off for the countryside and the shelters there(agricultural and rural-residential regions are OFFLIMITS to attack and combat landings, though certain parks and wilderness regions may be declared by agreement to be free combat zones), and settle in to watch on jumbotrons and in sports bars the show being broadcast by the cameras laced throughout th combat zones and the embedded troops. The invaders can even score certain privileges (like free landing zones, ceasefires, or non-strategic supplies), by providing live feeds from their OWN troops, even though this may give away details of their combat operations. The invaders are allowed to only attack the big juicy targets like cities and factories.
Of course, the displaced civilians get to bet on who wins, what gets blown up,and other factors.. POWs are well-treated, unless they violate the rules of the 'game;, in which case they are SEVERELY punished. Ay war's end, any surviving POWs are paraded like prizes, treated llke celebrities, do the lecture circuit before being shipped by slow-boat back to their homeworld. The long range videocasts of the star treatment of POWs help enforce the treaty of fair warmanship between the two worlds

Who says that, as a civilian, dying isn't part of the excitement? It just makes the show that much more interesting for all involved. And as for POWs, well, when your weapons are designed to impress, they don't leave much left to worry about after the whole thing is over.
Then add casualty figures among the betting pools.
The BIOLOGY of the two cultures could be different enough to assist in the attitude: one could be a species of asexual clones, or jellyfish-like parthenogens; in death, if anything remains of a corpse, it splits up into several juveniles. In the other society there could be a rabbit-like reproductive drive, with falling numbers triggering pheromone-drive reproductive urges(big funerals are followed up by orgies).

In which case, write up all your PCs with Language: Russian, as it has become the language of empire. Original national and ethnic languages are making their way back into common usage with the fall of the centralized government, but Russian remains the language of authority and that most commonly spoken by Rogue Scholars, especially those wanting to read pre-Rifts Golden Age documents.

Immediate Consequences of This: I dispatch my chrono-spacial minions to find whoever has been tearing chunks of geography out of their place and tossing them across time/space, then abandoning them, leaving others to clean up the resultant mess, to go off and throw around MORE geography like a bad golfer chips divots around. My minions will then persuade this person to either cease doing it or to settle down and take care of their new timeline. If the entity(or entities) responsible will NOT comply with either of these simple requests, and have no compelling explanation as to WHY they are behaving as they are, my minions will slay them.

The former has the danger of the French regarding themselves as being a conquered territory lorded over by distant (barbarian) Anglo-Saxons, while the latter has the risk of the appointed English aristocracy getting sucked down by continental Gallic society.
If, by some change, the two disparate cultures(and languages, though many of the English aristocracy largely spoke French as a matter of pride and sign of culture) unified, one might very well expect to see a polarization among Europe...Would the Dutch side with their allies in England, or see their own interests threatened? Spain, of course, is deadset against this powerhouse cutting them off from their Dutch possessions and arrayed on their border. And there's all those feuding little Germanic states to deal with...

Re: Alternate Dimensions
King George listens to reason, and allows proper representation in Parliament for the American colonies. Many notable colonials serve in parliament, several given hereditary title such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin. During a period of expansion at the beginning of the 19th Century, a huge swath of land is captured from France that stretches from Louisiana westaward and north, all the way to the Pacific Ocean. His Majesty commissions two noted naturalists and explorers to map the new lands and document their flora and fauna.
As the colonies are converted into duchies and such, all laws of the Crown are fully implemented. Slavery is abolished completely, and all former slaves are given the opportunity to own their own businesses, learn trades and own land. The Crown's dealings with the native tribes is mostly beneficial for all parties. Huge tracts of what has been for thousands of years land occupied by various tribe have been deemed off limits for colonial settlers and harvesting of natural resources, in return for their continued recognition of the "Great White Father" as their supreme chief. Over the next fourty years there is sporadic fighting with tribes in the Canadian territories who once supported the French. Tensions with Mexico rise when former colonials settle parts of the Mexican state of Texas, and chafe at the strict laws imposed by the dictator Santa Anna. War erupts in Texas, and due to popular support in the Colonies, english troops send in covert support to the Texicans. Help is slow to arrive, and the war almost lost with two massacres, one at Goliad and the other San Antonio (the Alamo). General Sam Houston receives intelligence from a British scout that redcoats are pushing west from Louisiana. Getting reports that Santa Anna is camped nearby, and not wanting to see King George steal Texas out from under him, Houston attacks during siesta, routing the Mexican army and killing hundreds. Texas goes on to push Mexican troops out of what would later become the annexed territories of New Mexico, Arizona and all of California, Nevada and most of Utah and Colorado.
Due to mistrust of the intentions of the King, tensions towards England are high until long after Sam Houston leaves the office of the President. The last half of the century is mostly peaceful, with a few border actions with Mexican raiders. Railroads join the coasts, even crossing Texas borders. The added commercial traffic and ease of moving across borders, coupled with relaxed political tensions open up ports on the Gulf as well as across the southwest and into California. Large numbers of Chinese are brought in to do agricultural work as well as work the railroads. Large Chinese communities spring up all over North America. Native tribes make huge sums of money dealing in hides, buffalo and beaver primarily. After two massives hunts led by a young Army scout, William Cody, concerns are voiced regarding sustaining he herd versus sustaining supplies of hides. The conservation movement is born, and the buffalo herds roam across the plains with quotas set aside for harvesting. The tribes utilize everything on the animal, and sell the hides for a premium. Several tribal capitols are set up across the land providing schools and markets as well as centers of government and policy. Some tensions arise when the Texans drive out several aggressive tribes, notably the Apache and Commanche, as they move into lands already claimed by other tribes. British law allows for the tribes to handle their own internal affairs, and the wars that pop up are short lived.
In the years prior to the the start of the 20th Century, the British Empire expands its influence further, encroaching on Spanish claimed territories such as the Phillipines. A short war erupts, and England claims all former Spanish claims in the Pacific, most of South America, and the Caribbean. In 1914 an Austrian prince is assassinated and plunges most of the European continent into war. England tries to remain neutral, but shipping lanes are plagued by German U-boats. Several dozen small merchant vessels are lost, but it's not until the Lusitania, a passenger ship, is sunk that war is declared. A huge influx of colonial and territorial troops and their fierce attitudes make quick work of the German armies. Germany is disarmed and occupied, but governs itself. About this time the communist party arises to power in Russia, beginning with the assassination of the entire Romanov family.
A second war erupts in the 30's when the German chancellor sparks a wave of nationalism, and then begins a systematic extermination of Jews and other "undesireables". An alliance is formed of the British, Texan and French militaries, and war is declared on Germany after invasions of several European countries. In 1941 Japan attacks a joint British/Texan naval station at Pearl Harbor, causing both countries to jointly declare war on Japan. The bulk of the British fleet is destroyed in port, but the Texan fleet is on maneuvers and is spared, including several aircraft carriers. The Texans hold of the Japanese in the Pacific while the British fleet rebuilds. In a surprise move, members of the German military assassinate Hitler using an explosive device in a secret bunker. Several other key Nazi leaders are killed, and in the weeks after most of the Nai party is rounded up.
Stalin calls off his planned invasion of Germany when British troops pour into Germany, Poland and other countries captured by the Nazis. In a daring raid though, a brigade of Soviet tanks sweep into Germany. they capture several German scientists and a prototype of a massively powerful weapon. The Soviet tankers suffer almost 80% losses, but the raid is successful. British troops sweep into Russia in retaliation, and the scientists, the prototype and all paper are moved to the Japanese mainland. There work begins on perfectig the weapon for use on the Texan and British armies and navies. Instead, days before a similar weapon is scheduled to be dropped over Japan, an accident causes a chain reaction, and the nuclear fuel source explodes, desroying the city of Hiroshima, only minutes after a Royal Air Force bombing run on the cities of Tokyo and Kobe. The Japanese lambast the British for daring to use an atomic weapon but under threat of dropping more bombs, the Japanese surrender to Lord General MacArthur.
The post-war era is one of economic growth for the colonies. A swing towards socialism in Europe doesn't sit well with many colonials. In a move found surprising around the world, the colonial governments petition the Queen for their sovereignty. Being one of two remaining imperial powers in the world, the Queen agrees, basing her decision on the unwieldy bulk of the Imperial diplomatic and war machines. The colonies adopt a govermental system originally designed by early statesmen, who before diplomatic efforts with King George were planning armed revolt. A free market economy was already mostly in place, and fully adopted by the 1970s.
The rest of the century plays out much as it would normally, with global hot spots including the Viet Nam War. The century ends with a strong global economy and emerging technologies that further decrease national borders and help bring less developed countries into the global folds. Hopes are high for the new century and the future in general.

Pearl Harbor survivors and anybody coming out of the Philipines(the Japanese were HORRIBLE to POWs) would still want some of the Japanese officers strung up on general principle. And that's just the Americans...The British POWs at Singapore suffered badly afterwards, and the Chinese would rather fight the Japanese than the Russians(Manchuria, Nanking....you just don't treat people that way).

Re: Alternate Dimensions
The Earth is arranged in not simply latitudes of geometry, but also of TIME; i.e. time flows at different rates the closer or farther one travels from the equator/poles...The time flow isn't terribly noticeable, say, between the northa nd south shores of the Mediterranean, but the difference between the equator and the arctic circle is quite telling...Time moves faster at the equator, slower at the poles...the closer one gets to the poles, the slower the flow of the time...several expeditions sent to reach the poles are STILL en route, as the closer they get, the slower their progress becomes, becoming stuck in time(this has led to a certain fatalism about the ultimate fate of these expeditions, that they may NEVER reach the true poles due to 'Absolute Zero Time' and that such expeditions are tantamount to suicide.
Meanwhile, the equatorial kingdoms(and the hothouse evolution there) zip along in respect, though nobody has yet found, if a polar Zero Time Point truly exists, a line of 'Infinitely Fast Time'(despite many 'Crossing the Hump' ceremonies in which those who step across the Equator are ssaid to experience a fleeting sensation of accelerated perception).

Re: Alternate Dimensions
Okay, David Weber's latest book, 'Out of the Darkness', deals with an alien invasion in the present time frame, which goes afoul when it's discovered that VAMPIRES are real, and come forth to fight the aliens.
Obviously, one can have infinite fun with 'hidden allies' from Earth's mythology stepping forth in our hour of need, because they too are threatened, they choose to defend Earth and forgive our past trespasses, out of the goodness of their hearts, or because they expect to be handsomely compensated afterwards....these new defenders could include Nieberlung Dwarves, Elves, Dragons, centaurs, vampires, ghouls, gargoyles, faerie-folk, Nature Spirits, etc....
Another related worldline might be that during Queen Victoria's reign, as science pushes the limits of the world, a group of Werewolves step forward, revealing their existence, and offering to swear fealty to the Queen in return for official recognition. After proving to the Queen's and the Church of England's satisfaction that the weres AREN'T hellspawned monsters, the Queen grants their request, giving them the protection of the throne. The Queen's Guard soon has a special regiment added to it; the Queen's Own Were-Rifles.
This sets off firestorms across Europe and the Americas, as Britain's enemies both arm against these newcomers with silver weaponry, and seek to recruit their OWN supernaturals. Meanwhile, the precedent set by Queen Victoria soon has OTHER supernaturals stepping out of the shadows requesting asylum and recognition in return for serving the British Empire....arousing controversy as not everybody likes what's coming out of the woodwork, and some of the asylum-seekers are suspect...Britain stands to either become the STRONGEST Empire ever with the power of these newcomers behind it, of it may be torn apart by internal dissent against them and the outrage of Britannia's enemies, including an incensed Roman Catholic Church.

Re: Alternate Dimensions
The Coming of the Rifts was NOT an accident; it was the fault of a group of amoral, utterly alien, chaos entities who seek to produce on Earth the perfect hothouse environment of natural selection, magical endowment, and technological innovation to produce agents of chaos to let loose on the rest of the megaverse. These entities were also responsible for the earlier Atlantean disaster; while in part they wanted to push the Atlanteans to get off their smug butts and go out into the megaverse to stir things up, the disaster was more to weed the Atlanteans, who'd become too dependent on magic, and too orderly, from the Earth so the entities could start anew, setting up a new set of guinea pigs for sudden environmental stress. Since the Coming of the Rifts, these entities have been responsible for opening rifts, letting various new threats to Earth(like Nxla, the Lord of the Deep, gargoyles, the Xiticix, etc...), and adding new stock, the better to challenge and blood the humans/d-bees who have been selected by the chaotic environment to be meaner, nastier, more powerful. Since on Rifts Earth even forces of Order, like the Coalition States, seek to expand their reach by aggression, the chaos entities are right pleased with the progress their experiment is making...and who knows, eventually, what rises out of the dark cradle of Rifts Earth may give the Infernals and their like an unpleasant surprise!

What do you think happed after that?

Gaby, you would not be born; something that honking big would crack Japan wide open, trigger the Ring of Fire, firing off volcanos all around the Pacific Rim, setting off massive earthquakes, and setting more ejecta into the air than Krakatoa, resulting in a Dinosaur Killer situation.
It's that's last extra meter of width that makes all the difference.

O.K it,s 1800 feet long,370 feet wide and 248 feet high that is small enough not to whip life from the Planet Right?

I don't hate you; if I hated you, I wouldn't respond to your posts at all...I just would like you to provide some detail as to what YOU think would happen when you throw out an idea or a scenario. I frankly feel bad that I can't respond to every one of your scenarios with something, but on the other hand when you arbitrarily chew up time/space, surely you must have SOME notion of what some of the consequences would be. Occasionally, I'd like to see and be entertained by what somebody ELSE can come up under such circumstances.
Come on; what do -YOU- think is going to happen when you swap slices of the world around throughout time/space or you crash massive boulders into the Earth's surface?
Aside from the obvious; people panicking, screaming, doing stupid things, attendent chaos, and the feces hitting the fan.

Interesting thought. Hmm, makes me wonder which kind of vampire this kind of story would work with. Palladium-like Vampires? Buffy-esque vampires? White-Wolf Vampires (my choice, because the Kindred had the best supernatural powers of any of these)? Or *cringe* Twilight Vampires...actually, if Edward was fighting Alien Invaders I'd side with the aliens.
I think teh secondsceario with the werewolves would work best with White Wolf werewolves. the idea of army regiments of gun-carrying Crinos from soldiers is awsome
Well, you wouldn't want vampires who fall apart under the onslaught of fire hoses, unless you were playing for dramatic effect...the glaring weakness in the legions of the Undead...though the idea that some nation might stupidly recruit vampires, then find one of their secret military facilities taken over when a Vampire Intelligence manages to come to the dimension and establish itself in person.
Of course, the Chinese immediately begin searching high and low for dragons...
Yeah, if Edward Cullen were real, I'd drop my liberal attitudes and demand an amendment declaring marriage as "between two living beings"...and vampires don't count as living beings...

I would pick the vamps from True Blood. Not only are they bad ass and organized, they'd be having all kinds of raunchy fun during the downtime.
They make a wondrous mess of things. Brave amateurs, they do their part.

The resulting nuclear winter would damn near kill off all human and animal life on the planet. The war on all fronts would come to a grinding halt, and there would be immediate evauations to what little liveable regions of the world exist, resulting in more armed conflict. After nearly three hundred years, the skies have cleared, and people walk the Earth again, though in a tiny fraction of their former numbers.
Most numerous are the Russians and the Northern Europeans. For the most part, people in these countries live with severe winters every year, and with some of the best scientists in the world at their disposal, they are able to smash together underground housing facilities, complete with limited agriculture via hydroponics. Iceland is almost completely unscathed due to their unlimited heat source - geothermal. It doesn;t take long for the Icelanders to improvise power generators using geothermal, and move mostly underground. The only populations on the planet seemingly untouched are the Inuits of Alaska, Canada, Siberia and Greenland. Their centuries of living in arctic conditions has prepared them for this, and they continue to live off seals and caribou.
The Coming of the Rifts never happens, as the bulk of the population died off centuries ago. Even with the mass release of PPE, other factors like that would have helped trigger the Rifts, happen with nary a flash. It takes another thousand years for Earth to recover to an early 19th Century population.
They make a wondrous mess of things. Brave amateurs, they do their part.
Re: Alternate Dimensions
Vamp Hunter-D, if you're thinking Twilight, in which case you're right. True Blood is a series on HBO based on books by a woman named Charlain Harris. In one of my fave episodes this season, Bill (Main series vamp) twists the head of chick vamp he hates (His maker ie master) around while getting it on with her to the point that her face is on backward!!! Now if that isn't badass I don't know what is. Although I will agree that White Wolf's version are worse (or better depending on your point of view.) It seemed you were mixing the two up.

Re: Alternate Dimensions
The White Wolf lore is pretty good, but the game itself sucks. I stopped playing after a buddy, who played a diabetic werewolf, opened a high security lock with a Snickers bar. Just because there wasn't a rule in the book about it. That and I kept running into creepier and creepier people who played it.
