New Generation: The Island Resort Scene(as originally filmed)

Everybody's hanging around relaxing(though Lancer's off on his own) when Scott Bernard steps onto the sands.
He's wearing a Speedo...that's all.
Lunk and Rand stare.
Marlene, Annie, and Rook stare.
"MINE!"
Rook and Marlene immeditely pounce on Scott(Annie is ejected into the waters)
Lunk and Rand watch the insuing catfight, look at themselves...
"Ah, can we maybe have him NOT take off his flightsuit? I mean, the guy's making us look PATHETIC."

As Khyron crashes his ship into the SDF-1, we see Captain Gloval and the command crew on the shore.
As Cpt. Gloval thumbs the detonator for the main power core, Lisa looks at him aghast.
Gloval looks at Lisa, shrugs, & says "Ah *bleep* it, it's a rental."

MinMei might have been a ditz but if anyone needed tossed out an airlock it was Lynn Kyle, he actively sabotaged the RDF whenever he had the opportunity, including supporting the Zentraedi after they destroyed 98% of the surface of the planet, and couldn't comprehend that humanity including himself only survived thanks to the RDF soldiers fighting to keep them alive. He'd have gotten along great with that cult that goes around protesting military funerals.
Fair warning: I consider being called a munchkin a highly offensive slur and do report people when they err in doing so.

It's 'canon', not 'cannon'. A cannon is a big gun like on pirate ships, canon is what you mean when referring to something as being contained within one of the books such as how many dice to roll for a stat.

Which is why he shows up here as a) a dunderhead being done in his own stupidity, b) a loud-mouthed loud getting his comeuppance, and c) a hypocrite being discovered and exposed(sometimes literally).
Here, he is not taken seriously, because he is going to be immediately humiliated.

Hehe... it's still a lot more dignified than how they actually met their ends in Robotech, and it fits Kyle perfectly. I still think the fate of his Macross equivalent, Kaifun, was an intentional dig at Robotech by Macross's creators.

You can also say that at least Minmei got better by the end of the series.

Okay, but bear in mind that the dojos that Kyle tried to enroll in were the Tendo Ryu Dojo, and the Fist of the North Star Training Academy, who have rather high standards....

So what happen to him?

Well... in Robotech, our boy "Kyle" met his end in 2043 when he disguised himself as a REF soldier and tried to singlehandedly prevent General Edwards and a squad of professional soldiers from abducting Minmei. Edwards got his sole "Crowning Moment of Awesome" when he shot Kyle dead after a brief scuffle twice... once in the Waltrip comics and once in Prelude.

On the other hand... like most of the supporting cast from the original Macross series, Kaifun is still very much alive. After he and Minmay call it quits in 2011 and she departs on Megaroad-01 in 2012, Kaifun continues working as a manger in the music industry. He lives on Earth for a while, and later moves to Macross-11 (in the 41st Long-Distance Emigration Fleet). Here's where it starts to turn into a dig at Robotech:

Y'see... the colony ship that Kaifun is living on in the 2040s is modeled on America and has English as its primary language. During his time there, Kaifun became the creator and the manager of Fire Bomber American, an unauthorized cover band that performs English versions of the popular (Japanese) band Fire Bomber's songs without the knowledge or the consent of the original band or its record label. Fire Bomber American doesn't stop at that either... they even dress like the members of Fire Bomber during performances, and claim that the original Fire Bomber is a ripoff of them, despite their having only made their debut several years after Fire Bomber's rise to popularity. Fire Bomber American has modest success in the limited market of its home fleet, but is roundly scorned as a shameless ripoff everywhere else.

So why was Edwards trying to abduct Minmei? I'd hate to think Kyle died doing something heroic when he should have gotten an ironic death brought about by his @$$hattery.

There is no end to the interesting stories that get created by people trying to do a 'take that' at someone else, although keeping him alive is such horrible thing.

Sh!ts and giggles, apparently... they never really explained why he was taking the time to abduct Minmei in Prelude. I'd call starting a bare-knuckled brawl with several veteran soldiers who all have guns a pretty stupid way to die, regardless of what you were trying to protect at the time... and doing so to protect a girl who dumped you and then slept with a bunch of guys you hate just to pass the time a pretty stupid way to die.

Totally... though Kaifun wasn't quite as obnoxious in the original, and his fate is one of the less-dignified ones among the Macross original cast. General Global and Kim Kabirov have some interesting ones.

True but it still rates as a heroic death, even moreso when you consider he had no hope of winning and even with all she'd done to him he was still willing to die to protect her. So it's really too good a death for him.

I figured it was pure laziness. Rather than have him develop some real character and do something that showed he was really capable of change, they just made him a stalker in uniform, and gave him an end that could be either interpreted as his obsession leading to a bad end, or a last gasp/comeuppance for an unpopular character, with dubious redemption in death.

Ahhh, a better spin on things. So it isn't an heroic death but instead a result of his stubborn unwillingness to learn from his mistakes that finally leads to his death.

Definitely... in my experience, it's not Tommy Yune's style to give an unpopular character a chance to redeem [him/her]self. His tried and true pattern is to heap a little more abuse on an unpopular character before disposing of them forever. There was nothing heroic in Kyle's death... he died every bit as much an unlikeable hypocrite as he was in the series. He was dressed as a soldier and sneaking around a military base for the express purpose of following a woman who'd told him to get lost 30 years ago when Edwards shot him... presumably with the intention of dragging her back to Earth so she could go back to being his meal ticket.

(There's even less dignity in it when you take into account the fact that, as the only civilian on the SDF-3, Minmei kept herself busy by having a string of affairs with senior officers, the very guys who Kyle hates with a passion... some of whom were married men. There's not a lot of honor in dying for a woman that sleazy.)

Tommy Yune has a history of doing stuff like that to unpopular characters. He turned good ol' Commander Leonard into an Anti-Unification League agent and saboteur working to bring the United Earth Government down from within. Dana Sterling was marginalized into a mute combat trauma victim who resents her entire family. Minmei ends up getting kidnapped by one of the officers she had a fling with and spends a year as his prisoner, apparently being tortured or beaten brutally before Rick could be arsed to rescue her. (Of course, some of these serve the dual purpose of banishing the remaining Macross cast from the show, for legal reasons.)

Man that sounds vicious, makes me glad I haven't seen that if that happened to so much of the original cast. I hate seeing such abuse being tossed out like that, at least for characters that really didn't rate it. Kyle did, Minmei while an airhead really wasn't that awful a character and you can blame some of that on Kyle.

Yeah, it really was... but I can't pretend it came as much of a surprise. Tommy was a fan long before he became creative director, so using the authority of his office to abuse parts of the series he didn't like is only to be expected. What's more unsettling to me is the way Tommy casually kills off almost all of the remaining Macross Saga characters in short order, and nobody in the story notices or comments on it.

In the span of five comic issues and roughly a year's time in-universe, he kills Kyle, Dr. Lang, Breetai, Exedore, Lisa's unborn child, all the Zentradi serving in the UEEF, and likely Max and Miriya as well. On top of that, he also severely maimed Minmei and Lisa, leaving just Rick to keep things moving. Nobody in the story seems to notice or care that the Zentradi are now functionally extinct, or that all these important people are dead. The only thing that draws any kind of reaction is Lisa's injuries. All these people die, and nobody bats an eye or even mentions it. (I'm not gonna count his reaction to seeing brutalized Minmei, since he waited an entire year before sending a single ship to find her)

That's the funny thing... years and years after the fact, Macek started to claim that he'd always intended to make Robotech's Minmei into a mediocre singer and a bad person with the alleged intention of sending a message that in a crisis even a bad person can do some good. The whole thing is obvious BS, especially considering his earlier accounts of Robotech's creation and some of the other hilariously obvious lies he tells in that same interview.

Ugh, nothing worse than an ascended fanboy who gets to move to 'running the asylum'. They get to put all their awful stuff that should be rightly left fanon into print and try to claim it to be canon. Won't get me accepting such awful writing as canon to the series.

Well people aren't perfect, they fail to remember stuff, contradict themselves at times, and yes sometimes lie if because of public reaction it seems for some reason a good idea to appear to be really on the side of the haters. He'd hardly be the first by a long shot and wouldn't be the last.

Well... in Robotech, our boy "Kyle" met his end in 2043 when he disguised himself as a REF soldier and tried to singlehandedly prevent General Edwards and a squad of professional soldiers from abducting Minmei. The how in ended in the book series. Intersting info on that he is still around and kicking, though IMO the comparisions you make between Macross and Robotech and what Kaifun does to Macek are way off. Are Macross and Robotech similar, yes, the same, no. If they were relatives, I would say they were cousins. There are many differences between them as there are similarities.

Point there....but he also effectively deserts his post to do so. Admittedly, if he'd done anything like go to his superiors about his concerns and tried to work in the chain of command, he'd have brought undue attention to himself(and the penalties for joining the service under an assumed identity?) to little effect...as Edwards was working the system far more effectively(just about everybody else in the UEEF command disliked him, but couldn't do squat about it).

So I guess he went with the best choice. Though let's not take him out of the game.

The Game of Pain?
Nah, Kyle's not an regular contestant on that...he's a sideshow filler; most of his bloopers are self-imposed, rather than than inflicted on him.
Because, all in all, Kyle/Kaifun doesn't strike me as a terribly bright boy; Khyron has constructive rage, a certain amount of leadership charisma(and, if you go with the Macross canon, is particularly inventive), and initiative going for him. Edwards has survival skillz working in his favor(and apparently knows how to suck up to the right people), Leonard also apparently had a certain leadership charisma going for him(and, if you buy into the comics continua, personal charm as well if he got Seloy to fall for him)...Kyle, on the other hand, tends to antagonize people who who got get him arrested, or if not worse, so much so that he can't ALL be youthful ineptitude. Perhaps a subconscious hankering for a Darwin Award?

I know I've been doing this too long when I wind up behind a truck with the following on it...
Restaurant
Equipment
Paradise

...and have a sudden image of a diner in the middle of nowhere. Inside, a counter help girl is watching several Tirolian Centurions coming in through the front door, several parked Bioroids just visible outside.
Behind the counter and the kitchen door, several armored ASC rangers are crouched; "Wait for it...wait until they're seated and are working on the appetizers..."

S'right....We also have the local public water company around here...
Metropolitan
District
Commission...

I drive by the reservoir and see... that's right..MDC...take a look at the large bunker-like water facility and think "Oh yeah, when it hits the fan, I'm hiding at the water treatment plant! They build tough!" 8)

After that, I go to work and reality hands me my arse.... :frust:

Because nobody seems to remember the old "Sentinels: The Movie" any more: :-(

(Scene: The Tirolian resistance fighters vs the Invid)

The fighters are cornered. They jump off the cliff to escape)
Tirolian: "AAAHHHHH!!!"(triggers his jet boots)--ssstttt----!"...oh crat, forgot to recharge them before I left the house this morning....AAAAYYYGGGHHHHHhhhhhhhh!"*SPLAT*

Take Two:
Tirolian: "AAAHHHH!!!"(triggers his jet boots)*FFFUUUU!!!!!*"AYIEEE!!!!!" (only one boot lights off, sending him flying off course over the horizon...)

Take Three:
Tirolian: "AAAHHHH!!!"(triggers his jet boots)*SSHHUUUSSSTTT!!*#WHAMP!# (He slows down so abruptly the guy behind/above him gets headbutted in the groin)"...urhkl...!"*WUNCH*

Take Four:
Tirolian: "AAAHHHH!!!"(triggers his jet boots)*SHUMMPHHH!* (He gets carried back up to the point where he jumped off...where the Hellcats are waiting for him) "AYYiiieee!!!!!"

Take Five:
Tirolian: "AAAHHHH!!!"(triggers his jet boots)*FWHOMPH!"(he lands short, landing on the camera crew)"YIIIIIIIIII!!!!!"*SLAMCRUNCH*

Take Six:
Tirolian: "AAAHHHH!!!"(triggers his jet boots) *FWHOMP!"*(he suddenly shoots up into the air)*FWAHMP!"(explodes in a fireworks display burst)

Take Seven:
Tirolian: "You know, forget it!"(He jumps off, whips out an umbrella, parachutes to the ground)

Regent: (Turning away) "Reward them!"

Regent: (Spins around) "ALRIGHT! WHICH OF YOU LITTLE $&%^$%ERS THREW THAT YOU S--"

(Continued from above)
(Scene aboard Invid flagship)
It's the Regent, laying in traction, full body cast, completely swathed in bandages, except for one nose-tentacle.
The Regis is looking at the vaguely-Invid-shaped ball of plaster and bandages.
Regent(mumbling): "How the hell was I supposed to know they were the Tirolian Academy soccer team....or that they could put one through the temple upper windows...!?"

Regent:"Fortunately, I am the Regent, and am made of extremely resilient stuff! No mere demolition charge is going to keep ME down!"
(Invid physician): "Ah, Your Awesome Majesty! Time for your therapeutic draining with leeches! Get all that bad blood out, no? And we have an enema to clean out those negative Flower of Life residues! Make you feel like a new slug!"(sound of hydraulic pump revving up)
Regent:  :? "...surviving my doctors on the other hand..."

Invid Nurse: "But doctor! How can we tell when the leeches are done?"
Invid Doctor: "Tht's easy! When it's a big, engorged, fat, discolored slimy slug-like...oh...Yes, I can see we might have a problem..."
