Supernaturalness of Demonic Mortals

Unread post by Tor »

Pertaining to DB12 content (Dimensional Outbreak)

We know that Cosmo Knights (DB2p99 1st new paragraph in right column3rd sentence) and Demon Knights (DB12p113 under abilities 5 and 9, bio-regen and SNstrength) are explicitly "supernatural" per their descriptions.

I am wondering if the two servants of demons that rank below Demon Knights would be considered supernatural or not. I could not find any statements supporting or denying this. I could not find statements discussing a "supernatural nature" or "considered supernatural beings" like the DemonKs.

I'm tempted to think the DemonKs share a similar "no supernatural candidates" as CosmoKs, but unlike CosmoKs I do not recall any mention of supernatural beings having an inability to become Demon Knights... we know that GreaterDMs can become DemonKs. Not suer about LesserDMs... whether they can be promoted to GreaterDMs or DemonKs I don't think was mentioned. With how stupid they become it might be more of a permanent expendable-pawn position, even if they do out-rank sub-demons (though I don't know why... super-demons seem better long-term investments since they respawn in Hades)

Although, without such a restriction, you would think that Lesser or Greater demons could become Demon Knights and that this would probably happen at least once and be mentioned were it possible...

But it does say "anyone can become a Demon Knight" on 111 so that's pretty inclusive. It might just be that Demon Lords (like the Forge) simply opt not to enhance supernatural beings most of the time due to it potentially making them too powerful, rather than being unable to, which is why we don't see Promethean Cosmo-Knights or Baalrog Demon Knights... so far.

I'm inclined to think that the Lesser (p120) Demonic Mortals, in spite of being more visibly transformed, are probably a less likely candidate to be supernatural, since they may remain SDC and merely get robotic strength. The grayest area seems to be the Greater (p122) Demonic Mortals since they're always MDC (except in SDC worlds, helpful conversion notes there) and get supernatural PS (and endurance, whatever that means).

Does anyone recall seeing any supernatural mentions in either of these like the two I pointed out for DemonKs? Wondering if I just overlooked it. Such mention is absent in the equivalent sections for regen and PS.

Although both have vulnerabilities to demon-harming weapons, it doesn't say they're actual demons (quite the contrary, unlike DemonKs, who become actual demons) so I see that as more along the lines of them being hurt by things that harm those who empower them.

Game balance ramifications to consider (although reasoning from this basis would be a moralistic fallacy) is that if Greater Demonic Mortals qualify as supernatural beings, this means that supernatural beings can become Demon Knights... meaning that Prometheans might be able to do so...

Anyone know if there are NPCs examples of either of these in later books? Looking for examples. I think only Human/Noro were mentioned for GreaterDMs and that combined with the 'combine HP and SDC' makes me wonder if Greaters are limited to non-MDC creatures. LesserDMs mentions they can retain MDC from their base race (presumably in addition to HP and SDC since "all" LesserDMs have HP/SDC)

One thing that would be interesting though, is that if GreaterDMs are not considered supernatural normally, I think it would be good to at least consider them supernatural when they change into their "Raging Giant" form. That feels like something that should out warning signs (yup, arguing from emotion).
