I recently saw an article...it might even have been in a National Geographic, in one of their 'food issues', a 2-page spread comparing the MREs of the major nations engaged in Iraq/Afghanistan peacekeeping...America came off initially rather badly, but as the makers and dieticians listened, the 'trade factor'(how many American MREs could be traded for another nation's) turned around in our favor.

I recall one of the issues of Challenge magazine had an article on the contents of the US Army MREs and what they were like, in comparison to the Soviet version. Apparently the black bread in the Soviet version was hard enough to use as a weapon in a pinch.

Supposedly, in one Soviet-era anecdote, the troops were using their black bread rations to filter antifreeze for the alcohol(in a related anecdote, the 'Blinder' supersonic bomber used several dozen gallons of onboard pure grain alcohol as part of its de-icing systems. Naturally, ground mechanics came to know the aircraft as the 'booze wagon').

And, of course, it was erroneously believed that vodka provided some protection from radiation(though this was probably more to dull the nervousness of the workers assigned clean-up at Chernobyl, before and after fifteen minutes of bucket and shovel brigade duty tossing bits of reactor core back into the pit).

actually, depending on the type and severity of exposure, alcohol is actually encouraged as part of immediate treatment by doctors.. if your exposure is to radioactive materials (like say radioactive dust/fallout), and you have not spent a lot of time exposed to them, the main treatment prescribed is basically to flush the body in order to get it out of you fast. (since the body actually does try to get rid of the material) alcohol does fairly well in getting the body to do that.

now, the workers at Chernobyl were pretty much doomed anyway because of their long exposure, but alcohol would have helped at least reduce the immediate effects. though i doubt the russians meant it that way.
