Poor HAL....he was given conflicting orders and no reasonable way of dealing with the contradictions.
Somebody didn't think it through...what the hell was supposed to happen at the other end when the Discovery arrived? Was the ship just supposed to float on by with the hopes that ET might ignore it? Or was NASA/UNSA going to trust a First Contact situation to a machine that had proven capable of homicide? Great message to ET, guys.

...Sadly, Zor's primer on Robotechnology, Protoculture, and the true socio-political state of the galaxy, including the Invid, was accidentally disposed of by the explorers of the SDF-1/ASS-1, after a mistranslation of the found work was mistakenly misidentified as a 'trashy romance story, of the sort one is more likely to find in backwater drugstore book racks, or on really bad fanfiction forums'.
