What is Systran 60? (DB5: Anvil Galaxy)

Unread post by Furoan »

Ok, so this comes from 'Communications in the Three Galaxies'(Page 33). Its talking about the three new systems that are being designed. The Ultranet is pretty clear, its using 'quantum filaments' between stars to transmit information. The third option, the IDAR is using psiconic crystals to transmit that same information...but I have no idea what the hell the Systran 60 is.

The book lays out that its intentions is to turn all the unaligned little systems and empires together into a new power block which doesn't really seem to lay in with a communication strategy...but then it mentions that there are scientists and laboratories where people are working on the project (and being sabotarged by the CCW and the TGE for fear of the sleeping giant that could emerge). But what is it?

The entire book (and all the phase world follow on books) is riddled with stuff like this.
It is throw away technobabble that is mentioned once and never brought up again. I
Stuff like that.
In this case I suspect that it was either
a) was a plot from the writers personal game that forgot to be fleshed out
b) it was supposed to be a plot hook that the GM can make into what ever they want
The rules are not a bludgeon with which to hammer a character into a game. They are a guide to how a group of friends can get together to weave a collective story that entertains everyone involved. We forget that at our peril.

Agrees with Eli on this.

Besides the stated 'Tax' reasons mentioned, there might be an effect based in the 'flatness' of the space in interstellar space that the 'ships' are using to make the communication faster then if does on the surface of a planet.

Maybe the writer was thinking of how in 'intergalactic space' CG drives can drive the ships exponentially faster then within a galaxy.

Each question should be give the canon answer 1st, then you can proclaim your house rules.

Thanks, I thought it was something like this but it always helps to have confirmation.

Could be anything from an actual technology being developed to an elaborate investment scam; "We'd have a game-changing communications system already rolled out if not for the interference by the ...well, we're not naming names, but they really seem to be ibvestig---SABOTAGING us, requiring us to move our operations, and start over...for which we will need more funding to recoup lost ground."

"Trouble rather the Tiger in his Lair,
Than the Sage among his Books,
For all the Empires and Kingdoms,
The Armies and Works that you hold Dear,
Are to him but the Playthings of the Moment,
To be turned over with the Flick of a Finger,
And the Turning of a Page"
