ConnectiCon XVII (2019)

Unread post by Glistam »

I submitted to run two Palladium games at this year's ConnectiCon, and due to a low number of non-DnD GM's I will be running each game twice! I don't know the schedule yet but I'm looking forward to a busy weekend of gaming! I'll be running a Chaos Earth game and a Heroes Unlimited game - both of which I've run before. This made me realize I should start to develop or finish some of the other one-shots I've had on the back-burner, so i can have more than the same five Palladium one-shot options to choose from in the future.

Good luck on this. I have been doing an update of all of my convention characters over the last few years to add more detail and make them more fun for me to write adventures for. Can't wait to hear how it goes for you.

My games are scheduled and my swag request is in! Based on past experience my evening games should have good attendance, but my afternoon games are iffy.

I've never considered making any through-line stories with my one-shot characters. They tend to only exist in the framework of that one-shot. I'm feeling like writing any kind of follow-up adventures would take away from the variability and randomness of the existing adventures, as I'd then be driving them forward with an "ending" in mind.

I'm the opposite I guess. The first time I ran convention games was at POH 3(?) in 2009 and I created very generic characters. No alignment, disposition, not even names and by 2013 I was bored to death with them.

The problem is when I GM for an actual group I write all of my adventures for the players and their characters. If a one of the characters takes SCUBA because he thinks it would be cool than ever 3 or 4 adventures I might throw in a part where somebody has to dive down to a ship wreck or flooded tunnels. I even took requests, like a hover car chase. This to me is what makes being a GM fun.

Now my new characters have everything that a regular PC would have but the I always tell the players that they are free to ignore it. A few characters do most seem to prefer playing characters with some...well character.

As for the stories there is no end in mind but I do write them as a series, just to keep myself interested and for players who play in multiple games at a con or over years, and I have more than a few at Owl Con, it keeps them interested too. I think the big thing is that they need to feel free to disregard any of the character stuff.

Oh man, recurring players. You're living the dream out there!

Only at Owlcon and only a few over the years. It is made easier by the fact that since at least 2011, which is the first year I attended, I have been the only GM at the con running PB games. Thus, if you want to play a PB game at that con you play in my games.

The con is over; the games went well. I am very tired - I ran six games in total while commuting back and forth to the con every day. Four Palladium games, two D&D 5e. I had a blast and look forward to next year. I did have recurring players, which was a flattering surprise!
