Re: Rathorc's New Mutants
Thanks for the fishhawks...I see bald eagles with increasing frequency along the Connecticut River, and the ospreys along Cape Cod(one couple even nests on top of a piling right next to the busy Steamship Authority slip in Woods Hole).
Seeing the birds of prey return in numbers, when as a child I hardly remember seeing them at all?
We must be doing something right.

And the Turning of a Page"

Re: Rathorc's New Mutants
I realise that I haven't posted in awhile, and I'm sorry for that. So, I'll post some stuff now. Here's the first (1st):
Bird (Bird of Prey): Broad-Winged Hawk
Original Animal Characterististics:
Description: The Broad-Winged Hawk is one (1) of the most numerous North American Bird of Prey species. They tend tio migrate in huge Flocks, or "Kettles", with Thousands of members of the species gliding on rising thermals. Some Bird members tend to Winter in Florida, but the majority average about 70 Miles (or 110 Kilometers) a day to log more than 4,000 Miles (or 6,500 Kilometers) before ending in the South American countries of Brazil, Bolivia, and even some ofthe Caribbean Islands. When compared to it's two (2) cousins, the Red-SHouldered and Red-Tailed Hawks, the Broad-Winged Hawk is slitghtlky smaller, but stockier in fram/body. The Adult members are easiky identified by a white-and-black band on their tails. The Broad-Winged Hawks have two (2) colour forms, the light coloured one (1) being more common than the dark, sooty brown one (1)
The Broad-Winged Hawk tends to breed across Canada (with the exception of the Rocky Mountains) and in the Eastern portions of the US (albeit not West of the 100th Meridian), and are mostly in Forested areas with Dicidous, Conifers and Mixed Trees, usually with clearings and water nearby. Concentrations of these Avian migrants can be seen at bottlenecks, such as the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and Panama.
The nests of the Broad-Wined Hawksconsists of a platform made out of freash twigs or dead sticks, often on/in old Squirrel, Hawk or Crow Nests in trees. They lay between 2 to 3 Eggs between the months of April to August.

Bird (Bird of Prey): Northern Harrier
Original Animal Characterististics:
Description: Found nearly alll over North America, the Northern Harrier is most often seen flying buoyantly low in search of food. A white rump, V-shaped wings and a tilting flight make this species easily identifiable from other Birds of Prey. The blue-gray plummage of the males are quite different when compared to the dark-brown plummage of the females. The most recogniable characteristic that distinguishes the Northern Harier from others is its Owl-like face, which contains stiff feathers to help channel in sound from Prey. The Northern Harier is known to be highly migratory throughout their range.
In order to avoid predation from larger predators, the Northern Harrier tend to prefer to raise their young on wet sites that are located in tall, dense vegitation.
he Northern Harrier breeds in a wide variety of wetlands, marshes, meadows, pastures, fallow fields that are located across North America. They tend to Winter in open habitats, such as deserts, coastal sand dunes, cropland, grasslands, along with marshy and riverside areas.

Bird (Bird of Prey): Red-Shouldered Hawk
Original Animal Characterististics:
Description: The Red-Shouldered Hawk has a remarkable distribution, with widespread populations that are located in the East and NorthEast, and in the Midwet Great Plains, along with in the West. They're located from Oregon to Baja California, despite a geographical gap of 1,000 Miles (or 1,600 Kilometers) between the two (2) regions. The Eastern Birds are devided into four (4) subspecies of Red-Shouldered Hawk; while the Western populations tend to belong to the subspecies known as B. I. Elegans. The red shoulder patches are not always evident, but the stripped Tails and translucent "Windows" in the Wings are easily identifiable.
The Eastern populations of the Red-Shouldered Hawk tend to breed in woodlands and forests, which are mostly consisting of Deciduous or Mixed, whereas those located in the West occur in Oak Woodlands and Eucalyptus groves. In Florida, the species also live in Mangroves. The Eastern Birds tend to migrate to Mexico.

Bird (Bird of Prey): Red-Tailed Hawk
Original Animal Characterististics:
Description: The Red-TailedHawk is the most widely distributed and and commonly seen species of Hawk in North America. There are as many as 15 Subspecies of Red-Tailed Hawk that have been discribed to date. These Subspecies tend to vary in colouration, tail markings, and size. The very dark Harlen's Hawk, which breeds in Alaska and the NorthWestern Portion of Canada, is so distinctive from the normal Red-Tailed Hawk that it was at one (1) time thought of as a seperate species from the rest of the family, but recent research suggests otherwise. While it occasionally stoops on prey, the Red-Tailed Hawk usually adopts a sit-and-wait approach.
The various subspeciesof Red-Tailed Hawk tend to forage in open areas and in a wide range of habitats and altitudes, varying from Scrub Deserts, Grasslands, Agricultural Fields and Pastures to Coniferous and Decidous Woodlands and Tropical Rainforests. They species as a whole tend to prefer areas with tall perch sites and can be found in Suburban Woodlots.
The Nests of the Red-Tailed Hawk tends to consist of a large platform of sticks with twigs on top of a tall Tree, Cliff, Building, Ledge or Billboard. They ley two (2) Eggs from between February to September.

Bird (Bird of Prey): Sharp-Shinned Hawk
Original Animal Characterististics:
Description: The Sharp-Shinned Hawk is a species that is small and swift, and is quite adept at capturing Birds, occasionally even taking on species that are larger than itself. The Sharp-Shinned Hawk's short, rounded winds and long tail allow it tommake abrupt turns and lightning-fast dashes in thick woods and dense, shrubby terrain. Armed with needle-like Talons, spindle-thin legs, and long, thin toes, all of which is due to Evolution, makes this species of Hawk well adapted for snatching Birds in flight. It's prey is plucked before being consumed, or fed to its Nestling.
The Sharp-Shinned Hawks occur/live in deep Coniferous forests and mixed Hardwood-Conifer Woodlands that arelocated across North America. This ranges from the tree limit in Northern Canada to the Gulf States of the U.S. During the Autumn/Fall migration, they are sometimes seen in flocks of hundreds of individuals. As a species, they Winter in Central America, ranging from Guatemala to Panama.
They tend to nest in nests that are sturdy in nature, andare made out of stick lined with twigs or pieces of bark. They sometimes use old Crow or Squirrel nests, and lay between 3 and 4 Eggs. This nesting period is between the months of March and June.

Rathorc, for your inspiration, take a look at these, especially their hunting behaviours:

Somewhere I have a word document that has (most) all of the animals, including illustrations, posted to this thread. It's at least 200 pages long and still far from complete. With changes to the formatting to make it look the way it would be printed in on of PB's books I worn out editing it. As it stands I have an entire folder in my email dedicated to "Rathorc Mutants Not Added Yet."

At the beginning of this most recent batch, you have the first one posted twice. Just thought you should be aware of it.

You ever get that thing set up as a PDF, you let me know. THat's one electronic volume I'd want to get. The animal pictures alone, given Rathorc's wide spread of animals.

Re: Rathorc's New Mutants
Well, I just finished doing up some new stats for a new mutant Bird of Prey and decided to post or. So, here it is:
Bird (Bird of Prey): Golden Eagle
Original Animal Characterististics:
Description: The Golden Eagle is perhaps the most formidable of the North American Birds of Prey, and is mostly found in the Western portion of the North Americsn Continent. It defends large territoriesthat range from Eight (8) to Twelve (12) Square Miles (20 to 30 Square Kilometers), and containing up to 14 nests. Even though it APPEARS sluggish, it is amazingly both Swift and Agile, allowing it to employ a variety of hunting technigues allowing it to catch specific Prey. It was shot and poisoned by both Ranchers and Trappers, it is also faced with dwindling habitat and food sources due to Human development in or near its natural habitats.
The Golden Eagle symbolizes all Birds of Prey with it's sharp Talons, Hooked Bill/Beak and large size. In North America, it occures mostly in Grasslands, Wetlands and rocky areas. It tends to head South to Mexico, where it breeds in open and semi-open habitats that range form Sea Level to Twelve Thousand (12,000) Feet (3,500 Metres). This includes Tundra, Shrublands, Grasslands, Coniferous Forests, Farmland and areas that are close to Streams or Rivers. The Golden Eagle tends to Winter in open area.
The nests of the Golden Eagle consists maily of a large pile of sticks and Vegitatyion and are located on cliffs, in trees and on manmade structures. In these nests, they lay between 1 and 3 Eggs between the months of April to August.
