Moo Gi Gong question
Moo Gi Gong grants a ton of katas; could a character trade, say, half-a-dozen of them for half-a-dozen skill programs?

per the text: No, only the one MA power of player's choice.
MGG is suppose to make the char into like Jacky Chan in his movies....without the outtakes.

May you be blessed with the ability to change course when you are off the mark.

Well, fair enough, I guess, but: wouldn’t a character pretty much still have the Jackie Chan moves even without various Weapon Katas? Say that you could, while retaining plenty of the W.P. options, trade some away; would you even notice, so long as you were only ever striking with pencils or bottles or whatever, or using a shirt to entangle one enemy or another — and, okay, sometimes just wielding a regular spear or paired knives, or whatever else you haven’t actually traded away, but usually shooting for more entertaining effects?

I Would say look at other MAFs in Mystic China and Rifter 3 & 9 before mod'ing anything. Even then work with your GM in the Mod'ing process.

Regularguy, Weapon Katas are under a different heading than Martial Arts Skills and Powers, and are thus not exchangable under the rule on page 82 and repeated under most forms. Note that there is no limit on the number of powers that may be exchanged for Skill Programs; a 1st level Dedicated Martial Artist with Mugi Gong and Hwa Rang Do may begin with up to three Skill Programs.
Consider checking out the "optional" article A Cut Above found in Rifter 30, specifically pp 22-27: Advanced Weapon Proficiencies. The section on Targeting and Thrown weapons seems like it would be perfect for a character focusing on improvised weapons, as would Mastery in Paired Weapons. I'd also take a look, if possible, at Weapon Improvisation from Mystic China pg 13, both to see if that should be grandfathered into Mugi Gong's weapon katas and to perhaps provide a base for advanced proficiencies.
