Gnomes in Rifts

Unread post by Warshield73 »

I am working on a pocket dimension adventure for Rifts and I am thinking of using gnomes there. I need a mountain, mining, tunneling race and I just can't use dwarves again.

I did a quick search of the PDFs and didn't find any but if you know of a use of gnomes in Rifts I would appreciate the book reference,

they're found in PFRPG, so check conversion book 1.

Thanks but actually they are not in the original or revised CB. I figure just because it is so unlikely that a player would use one in as a PC but that was my first stop.

are you using the original or revised CB1?

edit.. my original CB1 doesn't show them. i'd guess that they'd not need adjustment from their PFRPG versions in this case

I started with Revised and then went to the original. I was surprised they weren't in there at all too.

If they are not in ether of the CB1's then there is no conversion for them. Use them as they are listed in the PF2 Corebook.

I've already revised the stats from PFRPG 2e for what I want but I wanted to double check if gnomes were used elsewhere in Rifts. I just couldn't believe they weren't used at all.

I'm Pretty sure they are not in any other rifts game book...as of three years ago.
There was a recent Rifter article (one of the last ten, I think) about Gnomes. Might check that out too.

I'm curious, Warshield73, to hear about this pocket dimension of yours,

Places that might work well to introduce an at least initial rift include the Takamatsu Rift(with gnomes being a sentient perhaps yet undiscovered, the dimensions' size being unstated) or the rift at the SE tip of the Altai/Altay mountains as seen in Mystic Russia. That rift is detailed as linking to Old Detroit, Lalibela, and Atlantis, among others, and if the Gobi Altai is included in the book's conception of the range as the SE might suggest then Xinjiang Province's proximity to the Mists surrounding China could be cool.

The "optional" article in Rifter 81 mentions that the god Gandárran Gandáramgee has heard of Rifts Earth, which might be a fun thing to incorporate. The god's description as magically oriented, long used to space/dimensional wandering, dedicated to peace, but scarcely stronger than a Forgotten God leads itself to a possible hook: upon opening a rift to Rifts Earth Gan., initially empowered by the ley lines is able to siphon enough transdimensional energy from the Mists to create and relocate a pocket dimension for his gnome followers.

While not Gnomes, DoNA offers as options that involve 2 or more of your requirements:
-Shale Bogles (pg179-82)
-Obsedai (pg151-4)
-Iktek Diggers (pg106-8)

There is also the Puca Red Giants in SA2 (pg52-6) might also work if you are looking for something different.

Edit: WB26: Dinosaur Swamp offers up Tunnel Goblins (pg111-3) and Rat Man (pg120-2)

Have there been mention of kobolds in Rifts?
I forget to what degree the R81 gnome god's depiction jives with Garden of the Gods.

Well subterranean Rifts Earth really isn't explored much AFAIK, then again perhaps the Gnomes are mistaken as a subset of an existing race like Dwarves (or one of the larger Faerie).

Surprised you didn`t decide to go Trog!

Yeah, for some reason Gnomes haven`t ever made the crossing.
That being said, they make excellent sneaks and, unlike Dwarves, like magic! :D

(I have a Diabolist/Theif [7?/3?] that I had fun with in one game.)

With a bit of "acting," a close shave, and a strict diet; they can also pass for young humans. ;)

Perhaps they don't allow humans to visit? A "gnome-man's land," if you will?

Are they kind or brutal to their enemies? Do they show gnomercy?

Perhaps they like to catalogue everything they own with proper gnomenclature?

Do they have beauty pageants? Is the winner declared "Miss Gnomer?"

I... I'd better stop now.

I was mainly considered with just finding any reference that exists in the books but all of these are great in universe reasons for it.

The biggest in universe reason though is that in PFRPG the Gnomes are described as having a tiny population and near extinction due to losses in during the Elf-Dwarf War.

I wanted something that was never used, subterranean, but also a race that could be friendly with humans and other races like.

Sorry I forgot the Troglodyte specific point and that is Gnomes are smarter, higher MA, and can be mages. I considered Trogs, along with a fewer from D-bees of North America, but as I went along the gnomes just fit better. The only thing about gnomes that doesn't work with what I want was I wanted the race to have psionics but gnomes don't. Trogs have no magic or psi plus the low MA which I wanted for a few NPCs.

When gnomes get hungry, do they grab some food and gnom gnom gnom?

If they could come to present-day Earth, would Donald Trump want to build a 5 ft wall to keep out the "bad gnombres?"

If they don't like to settle down, does that make them "Gnomads?"

It's issued for small talents only...

I think Gnomes got a big change to their ME from 1e (PRPG) to 2e (PFRPG2nd) which no longer makes it possible for them to be Summoners?

Bad news for:
https://hearthstone.fandom.com/wiki/Pint-Sized_Summoner
https://hearthstone.fandom.com/wiki/Abyssal_Summoner

I always thought it would make sense for them to pursue that OCC since they're the weakest of the racest and would get the most use out of minions.

Not to mention it'd be much easier to hide on the shoulder (or in a packback carried by) your demon servant.

Luckily the ME requirements of Shifters aren't quite so intense as those of Summoners so Rifts brings back the option.
