Shorty's next Big Adventure Idea: Defeat Evil

Unread post by Shorty Lickens »

The PC's set out to destroy Evil. Or maybe something that's just evil.

As a one shot adventure:
Some local yokels have decided to worship a low-level entity (probably something from Conversion Book 3). Either because they don't know any better or because they were desperate to fix some kind of problem. The plot twist is the entity doesn't actually need their worship, nor does it gain anything from the people. It just finds this situation entertaining. When it gets bored it will either move on, destroy their village, kill some people, or leave some kind of lasting impression.
They discovered the entity when exploring, or just doing their routine small community business like farming and trading. The entity in question appeared to do something helpful, but in reality it was either a fantastic coincidence, or something destructive that the locals somehow misinterpreted. Either way, they almost immediately formed a cult to worship the being, and have even performed some mildly aggressive actions based on hints or direct commands from the entity. They have raided and stolen from other settlements and very soon will commit murder or other horrible atrocities. The PC's hear about this small cult from whatever sources they have either set out to investigate, or get caught up in the action. Either the cultists decide they have to attack the PC's because they are a perceived threat, the entity instructs them to destroy the PC's, OR the cultists don't realize how much trouble they are in and actually ask the party if they want to join, or just observe.
As a bonus the entity will occasionally do something to remind the townsfolks it is in fact real and has some power. Eventually the local village will split, with some factions loyal to humanity and their community, and others loyal to the entity and the cult.
Good role playing opportunities if one of the cultists decides to use this opportunity to make themselves more powerful or important, or somebody decides to betray the Cult after seeing what it does to innocents. Or form a new cult based on some other powerful intelligence. If so the original entity will take a hint and probably move on to a weaker community.
If they players convince it to leave, the entity may return some time later, or perhaps outsiders will perceive the action as a sign of weakness and move in. If the players vote for all out war they may get many villagers killed, both cultist and those not yet influenced by evil.
This probably lends itself to Rifts North America, in the wilds between civilized nations. It could evolve into its own ongoing campaign, or supplement another one. Like the players occasionally hear about their old friends and somebody is trying to resurrect the old cults, or a similar situation and have to detour to fix it. The permanent solution is to either destroy the entity, transport it to another dimension, or form a counter-religion based on keeping the entity at bay. Maybe it returns just often enough to be a real annoyance but never exposes itself to potential defeat.

And now that I read this over again I realize its a pretty typical Rifts adventure with no originality or ideas.
Oh well.

"Say, Yogh, that godling-entity sure looks familiar..."
"Oh no...It's my MOTHER. And she's doing her cult thing. AGAIN. I thought we'd gotten past this...."

"Trouble rather the Tiger in his Lair,
Than the Sage among his Books,
For all the Empires and Kingdoms,
The Armies and Works that you hold Dear,
Are to him but the Playthings of the Moment,
To be turned over with the Flick of a Finger,
And the Turning of a Page"
