What other "semi-magical skills" could an Acolyte choose?

Unread post by thorr-kan »

TtGD, p13 says "...an Acolyte may select semi-magical skills such as Divination (in place of any O.C.C. Related Skills) and any of the lores." Divination is exactly what it says on the tin, defined in TtGD. Ignore Principles for Magic, since that's a special case, and the Acolyte gets it already. But what other "semi-magical skills" might there be?

TtGD's Sorcerous Proficiencies are an option. Maybe "semi-magical skills" is an older term that did not get edited?

BTS has Astrology, which is just a specific Divination skill, and Meditation, which gives benefits beyond real life options.

Splicers has Blindfighting, Resist Torture, and Vital Spots.

N&SS/MC has Chinese Alchemy, Fasting, and Geomancy/Feng Shui.

Rifts: Australia has Corroboree and Use Songlines.

What other skills that give limited superpowers might be valid choices?

I'd even consider more meditative-style psionics like resist thirst or cold as a skill that might be learned - not actual psionics, but a learned behavior that mimics the effect of the power.

Isn't there a tai chi (not the N&SS style martial arts, but a lighter version?) and/or yoga? Maybe it was just a Rifter.

T'ai-Chi was a Rifter article. It was fan material for Chaos Earth northern England/Scotland, iffen I recall correctly. No notes right now.

N&SS/MC has Chinese Alchemy, Fasting, and Geomancy/Feng Shui.
Once you have meditation, I think Mudra from MC would fit. Especially if you also learn one (or more) of the Temple Philosophy skills (and/or hand-to-hand martial arts).

I don't recall Mudra being learnable outside of specific OCCs or MAF forms.

Are you suggesting a house rule of a Mudra being learnable for a skill, with prerequisites of Mediation and either a MAF/H2H:MA and/or a Philosophy skill?

That would work as a house rule. I don't see anything terribly powerful about it.

On a different tack, I recently purchased Yin-Sloth Jungles 2E. Holistic Medicine gets a really nice update with examples, and the Stalk and Capture skill for Military gives some nice combat maneuvers.
