They make decent caltrops, in a pinch.

Of course, D4s are better.

I have one character who uses d8 for punch damage due to a GM-made power, but that's it

Unfortunately, D8s and D12s aren't really used anymore in Rifts. Only when you bring over vehicles from Robotech do they come into play again. I use them in my alternative missile chart where APs are D4, Frags are D6, HE are D8, and Plasmas are D12. Thats xDx*10, BTW, depending on size.

The Wilks 'Mariner' pistol in Merc ops uses D8s for damage.

Our characters were a point or two higher in the stats, but not much higher.

It was just something different to try.

Statistically they would be one point higher for each D8 used in the roll.

Average on a D6 is 3.5.

Average on a D8 is 4.5.

Average on 3D6 is 10.5.

Average on 3D8 is 13.5.

not a huge difference, but noticeable. I might try that sometime.

I try to make people use D8 and D12 all the time. If I'm making up items or weapons, you can bet D8/12 will likely be involved. D12 is also something of a joke in our game ('the forsaken die'), so whenever you need to roll random times or other miscellaneous stuff, I say "...roll D12!" with a grin on my face. Everyone gets a kick out of it and laughs.

We are true losers.

I had a friend who used to run a D&D campaign who really liked the color combination of a particular eight-sided die, he was color-blind. A year into the campaign he realized that the reason all his monsters had such low hit points was because the numbers on his favorite d8 only went up to 4. The monsters got much tougher after that.

Our group has brought in the possibility of NSS Martial Arts into every setting. Several moves do 1D8 damage.

Everyone else has been talking about eight sided dice.

I am wondering if you were really talking about that, or not, because as far as gaming goes, eight sided dice are referred to as d8, not D-8, and the nearest thing I can think of are fanish references to a mythical Klingon D-8 Light Dreadnaught.

You do know by doing that you reduce the minimum roll and lower the average right?

My guess would be he's talking about Delta 8.

Seaquest DSV also has a similar concept with their Gelf program, short for Genetically Engineered Life Form.

And as far as uses for D8's go, I'm partial to kicks from those with Robotic Strength myself.
