Humans were not the only species to evolve into intelligent humnoids. Spiders have also evolved. Now there is a war between Us and the Spider people. Humans control Europe and Asia while the spiders control North and South America neither side haveing any great technological advantage over the other. However The spiders breed much faster and in greater numbers than humans but Humans are able to adapt better to there enviorment.

Ah but do the spiders feed on humanity? Or are they still on a fly diet?

Maybe those same spiders could be a delicacy to us humans. You know like king crabs.

An explosion in the population of certain kinds of mutated vermin renders the mainlands uninhabitable by Man...human populations are forced into an existance on, or under, the oceans, while attempting to take back the continents....

Millions of Unusual Small Creatures Lurking Everywhere!...

(Basically a smnall plastic trash can of flesh-colored plastic bizarro-pro-wrestling style figurenes sold in the general stores..
The Japanese made an anime based on some of them, but I always thought some of them would make GREAT Rifts inspirations...)

Thanks, Shiiv-a. I hadn't thought of those little buggers in a long time!

These last few alternate universe ideas are cool! And sort of sad without human beings.

How about a universe where mankind actually watches out for the earth. You know, no pollution. None of mankinds abuses. The cities are kept from growing too big. Careful cultivation of the planets resources. No living part of the biomass being driven extinct by mankind.

Atlantis appears in the mid-Atlantic during our current day, disrupting the Gulf Stream and shipping lanes..>It comes complete with appropriate animal and plant life, including dinosaurs, and Atlanteans...though these are not the urbane sophisticates of True Atlantia, but socially primitive(the most advanced of them try offering virgin sacrifices to the survey aircraft buzzing overhead...)

Some people want to set Atlantis aside as a preserve and tourist attraction, others want to divide it up, others want to set it aside as the new home base of a rejuvenated United Nations, while still others want it to be a new homeland(for themselves or undesireables forcibly deported from their own countries...). And the scientists worry about what it all portends for the nature of reality...

During the comeing of the rifts only a small percentage of the world is destroyed. Most of the super powers like America and China and Russia are still intact. All invadeing demons and monsters are met as they come out of the rifts by forces set to guard the Big Permanet rifts like Calgary.

Imagine every power in the Rifts universe being able to talk before they open fire. Even the CS using Diplomacy before they start wars.

Earth is designated a 'spoilage zone' for the dumping of alien garbage by a consortium of alien races, threatening to turn the Earth into a copy of the Garbage Dimension from Megaversal Builder....as piles of alien rubbish begin to accumulate, Humanity must struggle to try to save the Earth's ecosystem, attempt to reverse engineer some sort of defense from the cast-offs found in the garbage, and find resources such as food in the gathering alien garbage, all the whole avoiding being poisoned, crushed, or done in by exotic alien substances...

Coal is declared a substance 'of the devil' and the ban sticks in Medieval England....Thus, the Industrial Revolution, fuelled by coal, either never happens, or is greatly delayed, allowing other countries to get the jump on industry, leaving Britain in the dust(and likely deforested by a wood-fuelled economy)...

Alternate After the Bomb setting....one of the plagues that swept the Earth turned humans into zombies....Mutant animals are unaffected by it(or so they hope) so some animals say 'good riddance' to Humanity, while what would have become the Empire of Humanity, instead turns to the animal community to preserve themselves from the millions of zombies stalking the Earth....Of course, once the zombies turn to the mutants for fresh protein, sensing the 'human smell', it's every biped together to fight the undead in 'World War Z Meets AtB'....

Rifts/Beyond the Supernatural/Nightspawn spillover....A demon lord decides to invade a 20th century Earth, unleashing his minions on America's military bases, wiping out most of our heavy military forces withing hours, then proceeds to attack the cities, starting with the largest, and using the chaotic panic of refugees fleeing , to spread further chaos, and causing problems fo the regrouping defenders in other smaller cities before the the demons can move on them....The weakened state of America also serves as an opportunity for the country's enemies to strike with relative impunity...so the demon-lord plans....

Except....the same D-gate activity that allows the demons to assault cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, also allows unique bands of champions to come through....New York City finds itself being defended by a mixed band of Madhaven Mutants and Mystic Knights...Washington D.C. by either Republicans or Shemarrians...Chicago by Coalition soldiers or some other group...L.A. by..what?

AND/OR....The large cities start coming alive.....as if some mass-spirit were driving them...and the cities start defending themselves in ways unique to their identities....Los Angeles tangles its demonic invaders in a twisting labyrinth of moving roadways and highways, then choking them in smog....New York City purges itself of its demonic vermin by crushing them under moving skyscrapers and a towering Statue of Liberty....folks, use your imaginations...

Than the Sage among his Books,
For all the Empires and Kingdoms,
The Armies and Works that you hold Dear,
Are to him but the Playthings of the Moment,
To be turned over with the Flick of a Finger,
And the Turning of a Page"
