Due to a food additive slipped into the country in tainted Chinese food products, Americans suffer an epidemic of 'Roid Rage'...

a comet passes, and the gases that follow, blend with the atmosphere
result?
only the healthy survive. anyone with any kind of genetic problem [ poor eyes .. poor hearing .. mental or physical disabilities .. you get the idea ] suddenly drop dead over the next 2 weeks ...
giving the really healthy ones a second chance at correcting the damage that was done to the environment

Nano Missiles - used once and GM banned further use. They weren't THAT bad. and did stop a demon scout ship from returning with valuable info.

The use of fossil fuels promotes the release of mutagens that alter plant and animal life into analogues of early life forms(dinosaur cows, anybody?).

A freak accident with a supercollider causes time to fracture into zones over Earth; time accelerates in some regions and slows down in others, so one can stand, for instance, on the banks of the Mississippi River and watch the seasons chance four times a day on the opposite bank...

It is discovered that our brains are parasitic organisms that have taken over our bodies...our mentality and intellect actually exists as pure energy distributed throughout the rest of our bodies as a 'soul'...
The subsequent Revolt Against the Brains causes no end of gross-out moments...

It is discovered that the earth is a small chunk of a larger planet that was hit by a large astroid launching earth into space where it was finally caught in the gravity well of Sol. The mother planet has finally come looking for its marooned children only to discover that the new stars color and Gravity have altered the people of earth into what we have today.

After searching half of the galaxy and not finding any other life forms scienceist reexamine what they know about life and find that earth is slightly out of phase with the rest of the universe. Working on the problem tirelessly scienceist come up with a solution to the problem and shift the earth into the correct phase variance. Discovering that we are smack dab in the middle of the largest empire in the galaxy.
When mankind makes contact with other life forms in the galaxy we are told that humans once ruled the galaxy with an iron fist. Our empire was destroyed and earth was bombed back into the stone age all technology was striped from us and we were allowed to survive in order that we might change and one day take our place in the galaxy as peaceful memebers of the galatic allaince.

Disney Nightmare: Sometime around the turn of the century, a mad toymaker/cabalist named Giepedo unleashes an army of fireprooofed wooden automatons on the powers of Europe, and quickly seizes most of the world....Now the cities of the world have mostly been rebuilt into faerie tale castles, towns, and cottages, patrolled by the fantastical, deadly, and merciless ClockWork Empire, while humans live as slaves, in a forced peace with one another, but under the lash of their automaton masters. Worse yet, a tithe of young people is taken, to be remade into toy-soldier cyborgs to serve the artificial boy who has now rebuilt himself to be Emperor, and perhaps, he aspires...God!

Carlos V of Spain, despite the Pope's removal of Italian troops from Germany during the former's campaign against the Lutherans, manages to win anyway, using brute force, and breaking the back of mainstream Protestantism....Hoping to have crippled and embarassed the Catholic Habsburg king, who he feared was becoming too powerful, the Pope is apalled at this tuen of events, but is forced to acknowledge Carlos as the champion of the Church, especially since Carlos V has recouped his costs by demanding tribute from the conquered Lutherans and/or confiscating their estates....Britain gains even more population from refugees fleeing from Europe, many of whom go on to settle in North America, pushing up England's colonization efforts in the Ñew World...
Meanwhile, the Pope is forced to tread softly with a Spain that is more powerful than before, and a Spanish-Austrian monarch who may well be able to dictate terms to the Papacy....Does Church win out, or does a Catholic Civil War between the Spanish ultra-hardliners and the Italian hardliners break out?

A squad of USA GB-10s gets caught in a time rift and find themselvs at the start of WW2. Due to the partiotic nature of the pilots they turn over the GB to the US government so that it will give them an edge over the Nazis. The pilots also teach the US government how to pilot them. As a result WW2 last about 4 weeks before the Nazis are completely defeated.

A Triax experimental facility winds up appearing in the Arden during the Battle of the Bulge, and is fired on by Allied forces....will the New German Republican soldiers side with their countrymen, or assist the Allies in bringing a quick end to the war(and maybe prevent the Cold War from happening)?

How about the world where nothing gets dirty no matter how hard people try. Things never rust or degrade! They can be melted down and reused if they are outdated.

A future Eath environmental movement goes to extremes....ALL communitioes must be able to produce at least 50% of their energy, food, and material needs....EVERYTHING must be recycled..Every able bodied person must assist in environmental bioremediation efforts as part of manadatory community service...Tourism in the wild may ONLY be conducted by the ultimate 'hands off' uber-tech means...via nano-mites or a new technology of artifical astral projection(also the same technology the Ultra-Greens use to spy on people to make sure they comply with the laws).
Naturally, faction of uber-consumer 'Userists' and monument-building 'Markers/Commemorists'are running lose trying to make a statement for 'guilt-free' human existance...the extremists of these groups want a return to the old ways(and are thus called 'clearcutters' and 'Dumpers')...a few space-fanatics(the 'Manifest Destiny MOvement' ) is clashing with the extremist 'Cosmo-Purists' who don't want the 'disease' of human kind spreading into the 'pristine' galaxy....For the most part, however, most people toe the 'Green is Safe' line, but a few are worried about the zero-population growth that's been the norm for the last several decades......

The Russians never sold us Alaska, but held onto it as a foothold in the western hemisphere....
Would either the United States or Canada stage an 1800's or early 1900's invasion of Alaska to drive them out? Would the East/West Cold War have started earlier, especially after the discovery of gold in the Yukon?

Corrected...
What if the Russians didn't stop with Alaska, but took up Canada up to the western shores of Hudson Bay?
Then later, after the Oktober Revolution, decided to sell Canada to the United States?

"Trouble rather the Tiger in his Lair,
Than the Sage among his Books,
For all the Empires and Kingdoms,
The Armies and Works that you hold Dear,
Are to him but the Playthings of the Moment,
To be turned over with the Flick of a Finger,
And the Turning of a Page"

What about a world where everyone gets the job they wanted from childhood. And every person would have every benefit possible.

"Your Grace," she said, "I have only one question. Do you wish this man crippled or dead?"
"My Lady," the protector of Grayson told his Champion, "I do not wish him to leave this chamber alive."
"As you will it, your Grace."

But if you change your mind later, you're stuck with it...no take-overs...or else you pay BACK all the benefitts you sucked up while working....

What if the earth was the birth place of more sentient species than just man. And what if an earlier intelligent race came back and wanted earth back from us.
