Didn't I just say that in fewer words? But yes it does matter, so would anyone allow a PC to bury a large heavy machine that requires fuel, air and exhaust. How many of those same people allow hollywood clips/magazines?

Ah... well that is it then it isn't just because of the woodchipper. He actually just made her into fish food and easily carried down river by the current. I was thinking it was done in a yard which would have left lots of evidence reguardless of how fine she got "chipped." So they couldn't or just didn't need to run DNA on the blood? You can get DNA from blood or hair.

oh, ya. about that.
waht about simple bright shineys to distract them> it doesnt have to be something super-complex perfect all-times all situations taention keeper- it just has to take their attention for a few seconds while they want to figgure out what teh hell it is.
htne you kill them.
Since when are zombies attracted to bright shiney things? I only recall them being attracted to noise. So maybe like a lawn windmill with a playing card or cards inserted to making a clicking noise. Or and RC toy with a siren. Or some squibs... followed by a large blast.

thank you underground and zero for getting us back on track. in my game some of the zeds are attracted by sounds and lights or (shinny thing) lol. others can hear a persons heart beat from about 100 yards and are harder to distract, but they can still be distracted with the right bait and a little planning.

So all decoys must have raw bloody meat, noise, motion, shiny things AND playback device with the sound of a heart beat... OK then got it.

ok, lod noisies. lol.
uh, maybe a bicycle wheel with palyingcard stuck to the spokes, then somehow rigged to keep rotating; maybe have one rigged to serve as a kind of windmill blade, or rigged to an electric motor, or something like that.....
I'd prefer windmills... don't require power. Plus if it is actually a functional power generating windmill could always figure something out to store energy and on those particularly still days when the blades aren't moving the stored power is reversed and turns the blades without wind. Heck instead of card why not just make sure you never take care of it so it is really squeaky.

becasue itll eventually break that way.
bah a small garden windmill will eventually break when zombies mob it anyway so why not use an old squeaky one instead of a new one?

Boombox blaring ride of the valkyries with a 200lb buried incendiary device below it, radio controlled. Boom box in a heavy metal cage.
A couple of propane tanks, a few full full gas cans and a few cannisters of aluminum or iron shavings/powder with maybe 5-10lbs of blackpowder buried below it. Then just set it off once enough zombies have gathered nearby.

The scale is rigged so when it reaches a certain weight it sets off a bunch of C4 you've set up around and on it. Sorry that is more of a zeek trap than a zeek distraction. Oh yeah and of course you change the weight scale sign on the entrance so it says "Scale closed, rigged with EXPLOSIVES!!" since zeeks can't read, should be just fine.
why not something reuasabe? like just let it tip over and dump them into a pit of high-speed steel paltes that shred them like lettuce? then you could use it over and over again!
Uh... maybe because the required heavy machinery would attract the zombies while your building it. Maybe because you'd have to clean it. Maybe because it requires fuel or electricity both of which you have better uses for. What are you going to do with C4 if you have it? It can't be used as an effective grenade all... ok most uses of C4 have to be preplanned. This was a thought of stuff you leave behind as you cross the nation so it is more of a trap rather than a distraction. But it sure would work as a good distraction for herds for the people that come through there later.

WOW that is good... your right playing cards ARE easier to replace than windmills... you realize you'd have to replace the "bicycle wheel with palyingcard stuck to the spokes, then somehow rigged to keep rotating; maybe have one rigged to serve as a kind of windmill blade, or rigged to an electric motor?" A garden windmill from a Home Despot or Lowes or Fred Meyer's garden deparment is cheaper and easier to scrounge and assemble than your powered, modified, bike wheel... plus they're normally pretty squeaky already.

Re: zombie distractions
A radio controlled detonator is not expensive or difficult to produce. I doubt radio shacks are going to be the first target for looters or those trying to salvage to stay alive. A trip wire or plunger type detonator would not guarantee you'd get the maximum number of zeds congregating first. A wired detonator could accidently be disabled and would certainly mean you are fairly close by instead of possibly being half a mile away observing with binoculars.

Do we just scatter them on the ground and hope most of the zombies are pattern poker addict zombies? Now if we brought Ludicrous magic into it then I'd agree, because we could use 52 card pick up which would affect the zombies even if they don't have functioning brains... because it's magic.
since we know all the home despots and lowes and such have all been looted and burned to the ground months ago, i must assume your just being sarcastic.
Yeah... where does it say that? Besides who is going to loot anything out of their garden department besides tools that could be used as weapons?

WHAT?!?! Everyone loots Radio Shack.

It would be funny because you get the normal people looting Walmarts, FredMeyers and other stores. The gun bunnies raiding gun shops. The wannabe looting sword shops. The geeks looting radio shack and other tech stores and the science nerds raiding chem storage... hmm that makes me wonder what happens if you blow up several tanks of liquid nitrogen in the middle of a zombie horde... OR I wonder how much work it would take to remove the water supply from a warehouse fire suppression system vent the water and replace it with liquid nitrogen... would that even work?

unlesed you happen to have the ability to make more handy, your gonna run out sooner than later.
ALTHOUGH....... now that i think about it, whay not "bunker" the weight station shack, like with sandbags or wahtev, then put a pretty good attenan on top, then run the wires out to the c4...... ok, so now its radio controlled, but the radios are safe from the blast so its reuasble.......
WERE BRLLIANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WTH?!?!? You do realize that RADIO CONTROLLED means NO WIRES? Ah... I see what your saying an Antenna to increase the range you can be away from the weigh station. Why would you need that if you rig the scale with a detonator so when it reaches a certain weight it sets off the explosives? Then you don't need to stick around and watch and it gets max zeek for the bang.

Re: zombie distractions
Other option is you can rip the radios out of just about any car, cellphone etc and make one even without a cell network. Its not "keyed" so anyone transmitting on the frequency would set it off (good idea to maybe have a delay on it just to make sure, basically just a large cap, and a frequency scanner to check before you enable the detonator).
However, you can use just about any car radio, cell phone (even with no cell network) to set one off. Sure you might eventually run out of stuff you can scavenge to make radio controlled detonators, but you are probably going to run out of stuff you can easily make go boom first.
I also have a new toy I'd try to take with me in the even of the world ending. Well two, 24" long bolt cutters and a 10lb sledge. Got them at harbor freight for a shed demolishing projects this weekend (taking out my old sheetmetal shed and building a larger proper shed in its place).

Re: zombie distractions
I had an interesting distraction accidentally happen in my game. One of the PCs was out hunting (It is set in rural area of Kansas, trying to make it down to the coast and get a boat) He shot a rabbit. I don't know if any of you have ever shot a rabbit before, but if you don't kill them with the first shot they scream. Strange noise to hear from a rabbit, but it is fairly loud. The PC was using a BB gun to hunt rabbits and squirrels, so the gun was actually kinda quiet. The rabbit got hit in the foreleg and took off screaming. It made it about 15 feet before the 4 flesh eating zombies converged on it. scared the crap outta the PC, who only had a hunting knife and a .38 special. He ran like hell to make it back to the group and actually made it because the rabbit had given him a good 50 foot head start and a distraction. Maybe keep caged rabbits or birds as a distraction. Rabbits eat just about anything, and when you need them they make a good stew.
*McRipper said so*

Re: zombie distractions
That's the point though, sulfur isn't just any and everywhere. Charcoal is easy to make. Saltpeter isn't necessarily something that is non-space intensive and/or isn't everywhere and sulfur is relatively "rare" when it comes to a "one man" or small group survival situation. Once that is done you have to know the exact formulation (okay, relative child's play) and then actually effectively combining the ingredients takes a lot of trial and error even if you know the basics of what is behind it. Not saying it is necessarily representative, but Mythbusters had a segement where the 3 stooges tried to make their own black powder and it took them a lot of trial and error and their final best result still wasn't even close to snuff with modern black powder.
You'd be a better situation just being really knowledgable and raiding gun shops and/or any store with cleaning supplies, gas stations, etc.

Re: zombie distractions
Is this thread about Zombie distraction or distruction?
Some fact checking is needed.
Underground do yourself a favor and google ' sulfurless blackpowder '.
I make my own black powder and sulfurless black powder all the time and both superior to commercial grade alot of black powder shooters make their own, it's not that hard and many make it superior to commercial grade it's not hard it just takes proper understanding to what you are doing and time.
Another key issue is the more you mill/grind your ingrediants the better especially the charcoal that the finer the better-less fouling.
Anytime somebody says "you have to know the exact formulation " about black powder it really means they are only doing a wild ass guess themself.
More fact checking, I don't know where Azazel is getting his concertina wire but it doesn't come close to meeting any federal specifications on it's tensile strength, it wouldn't even be rated for stopping sheep much less determined fanatics.
Real concertina wire will not only stop a mere 12 zombies it has when properly emplaced stopped determined cars from getting through, I've witnessed three such attempts in Iraq and know of several more.
Concertina wire we use around installations is razor wire not razor tape but razor wire, razor tape is normally found rolled along the top of minimum and medium security fences and it too is still far stronger than what azazel has said.
Concertina wire when properly emplaced is alot like quicksand the more you struggle through it the more you get hopelessly tangled in it and it being razor wire makes doing so very nasty in trying to.
Zombies may not feel pain nor 'bleed' and that means diddly.
There is still only so much damage zombie bodies can take before they are reduced to being immobile, they will still get their skin/muscles ripped off them while they mindlessly struggle through it and getting hopelessly tangled in it. You will naturally need a deeper zone of concertina compared to standard setup but it is still viable.

im not the one saying its impossible, im only saying its difficult.
Was just telling you to look it up so you can see for yourself just how unimpossible it really is, it's easier than you'd think, just time consuming.
There's too many things being said wrong on forums anymoreespecially in rpg ones it's always best to go fact checking it yourself.

Simple distraction against a zombie(s) chasing somebody through a building, well take out that hamster ball with appropriate sized rodent inside and let it go.
OR pull out a cheap battery operated noisemaking toy and let it go.
One of these insanity inducing things should work nicely.
http://dispatch.novelr.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/monkey-cymbals.jpg
Simple distractions to give you more time than you had.
could also use any of those insane halloween motion sensored toys, wall mounted singing fish and halloween decorations.
Battery operated xmas lights, that will get their notice especially the ones that blink.
Then you have all the battery operated strobe flashers.
There are millions of easy quick carryable distractions can use or build.
Those stupid party noise makers come to mind and are easily converted to battery power.
An oldy but a goody while In the store scrounging for things, go to the air frensher department go get those battery operated timed airfresheners and remove the airfreshener and place an air horn in it and set the time interval and then go annoy your rotten neighbors, uhhh I mean go distract your zombies-taught my nephew this one and my ex sister in law really loves me now but she no longer drops the little guy off unannounced so she can go 'party'

Re: zombie distractions
A single strand of concertain wire would almost deffinitely be broken by a dozen or so "people" struggling against it if they could put their weight in to it.
I've seen conertina wire stop a car as well, it was most deffinitely not a single strand, it was several strands. The stuff is about as strong as good barbed wire or the wire in a chainlink fence. Though it has the perk of still being coiled and being able to absorb impact energy and entangle well. IE you need several strands if you are going to stop a lot of weight/fast moving vehicle. I've handled it and I've broken it as well, both with wire cutters and overstraining it (actual conertina wire, not razor tape).
I decided to look it up just for giggles since I've never bothered to see what the tensile strength of concertina wire is. Most companies seem to make Concertina wire that has a core of between .08-.12" of 430 Stainless steel. With 430 stainless that gives you a tensile strength of between 400-800lbs per strand. So more weight than that would break it. Of course steel is great in that it'll stretch, especially concertina wire since it is all coiled up. Just a few strands will soak up a speeding car, slow it down and stop it. A single strand won't, and a single strand will not stop a dozen plus zombies from pushing into and snaping it if they have decent traction and getting hung up doesn't impede them from all pushing on the one strand.
In Dead Reign they make it pretty clear that muscle damage won't do didly to a zombie. Having to remove a limb would likely hamper them.
So yeah it makes a great barrier, but a single strand isn't going to do more than slow down a large group of zombies (and what about the zombies pushing on other zombies from behind who are hung up). A well entrenched fence made out it would be awesome though, just make sure you use thick poles with deep concrete footings.

Wouldn't anything that emits bright light work? Any bright light could emulate the whole PPE detection thing. Maybe just a couple road flares might do the trick. To initially attract them, one simple shot from a gun would suffice.
