Investigation of Tall Pines Mental Asylum

Well, here it is. Finally the notorious history of Tall Pines Asylum is about to come to an end. And the crew from The Lazlo Agency Annex is going to go investigate the place before CK International demolishes the place next month.

I figure before I continue about the thread that will be posted on Lazlo, I should give some back story for the nortorious Tall Pines Asylum.

The asylum was built back in 1810 by doctor Lennox Blackthorne. At the time, the asylum was one of the first in the country that practice " psychiatric medicine " rather than the more medeival beliefs surrounding mental disorders. However, not veryone, including the local ministry agreed with the medical theories of Lennox Blackthorne.

Many times alledged possesseions, witches, and heretics were brought to the safety of the asylum rather than suffer at the hands of the dated and often brutal practices of the church. The local minister at the time; Father Cylus Grant did not approve of these " acts against God " and often voiced his disapproval publically, and often to no avail.

Dr. Blackthorne had a fully staffed hospital that would tend to not only those sick of mind, but sick in body as well. Before long The Blackthorne Asylum earned quite the reputation throughout New England. The hospital was passed down ffrom father to son - Heathcliff Blackthorne, who did not share his father's desire to heal, rather than a desire to make a profit.

Corners began to get cut, health care dropped, doctors were replaced with " orderlies " that were more like thugs. Soon the reputation of the hospital began to slide drastically and the wealthier clientel tried to pull their family members from the hospital. The key word being " tried ". Soon the health care became methods of torture and the people in the town grew terrifie dto go near. This was all the fuel that Cylus Grant needed to launch his camapign against the hospital.

By the 1840s the hospital was running in the red. The more money that Blackthorne lost, the more cruel he became to the patients. Finaly he began the experimentation on the patients. New and untested methods were allowed to be implicated. The patients began to die and bodies began to go missing.

Then on one night in 1847 the hospital was burned to the ground in a mysterious fire and the staff was lynched or arrested to stand trial for their crimes. Dr. Heathcliff Blackthorne was lynched and burned alive by Cylus Grant. Afterwards the good father left Maine and headed west, never to heard from again.

The ruins of the hospital were a grim reminder of the horrors that transpired there. It was not until the fires burned out that they found the bodies of over 300 people disposed of in a gut pile in a hidden chamber beneath the ruins of the hospital.

The grounds were left uninhabited until 1925 when a new hopsital was built by the state; Tall Pines Psychiatric Hospital. During which time the usual urban mythology began to surface about the hospital being haunted and claims malpractice.

The hospital was state run until it cut its funding in 1990. In 1994 the main hospital was shut down for good after a patient escaped and brutally murders 30+ people in a killing spree that lasted 36 hours. The patient was killed by local law enforcement but the hospital still lost all state funding due alot of bad publicity and inpending law suits. The hospital director Dr. Malcom Daniels hung himself in his office the night he received word that the hospital was shut down. Only the new building remained open and privately run until recent events.

CK International purchased the buildings, the grounds, everything and has plans to demolish everything and build a state of the art new hospital for the care for terminal and long term care patients suffering from both mental and physical disorders.

According to local legends; patient 312 - Adam McNamara did not die and still haunts the old hospital.

Ok this is for Joe & Dr Boggs

Our story will begin the night before, I am thinking a Friday because its Happy Hour at The Brick and I know how Boggs likes his drinks.

Ben, Joe, & Boggs will meet for steak and drinks and make small talk until Carter arrives (a 4th member of the party). Once he arrives he will be the one to fill in everyone abut the history and urban mythology of the hospital (as seen in the earlier posting). As to why CK International has an interest in the hospital, both Ben & Carter keep hitting a brick wall. Boggs & Joe could try any of their " connections " but it will take about a day or so for them to get back to them.

In the meanwhile, Boggs & Joe get to meet some more of the town's folk including a flavorful character named Jarvis Kopek; a conspiracy theorist/taxidermist/redneck/gun runner who lives just outside of town. Ben lets this guy do his business because so far he hasn't shot anyone; yet.

Joe has been to Cypress Cove a few times already and has been given his choice of the apartment above The Brick or a cabin to stay while he does his Lazlo Agency Annex job. As for Boggs, you enter into a quaint little town that is something out of Norman Rockwell meets Castle Rock. Its a small town about four square blocks with the sheriff station looking fairly up to date. The old town paper office we discussed is just across the street and three doors down. If Boggs went to the office, he would have found some interesting things (I will PM you about the detail later).

Kopek enters into the bar and is complaining about feds, eminant domain laws, and those CK International goons snooping around his place and out by the old hospital. He also goes on to say " that he saw about 6 or 7 guys go into the old hospital building, and only one fella came back out and drove off like his hair was on fire and his ass was catchin'. " Ben buys him a stiff drink and tells Kopek not to talk to anyone else about what he saw.

They wrap it up about 11:00 so that Ben can return home to relieve the baby sitter. Boggs will probably be staying at the local motor lodge/motel you see as you enter into town. It features " Color TV and air conditioning ". But in all seriousness getting a cell phone or internet signal in this place is like a crap shoot, so a direct land line is your best bet.

The next day allows the characters to go about their business, explore, what ever they would like to do as Ben has his sheriff duties until 4 o'clock and Carter runs the local book store.

That night at about 6 o'clock is when the party will drive on out to Tall Pines. Of course Ben comes prepared with flashlights, glo-sticks, first-aid kit, and a few other essentials, including his .45 OPSEC psitol. Carter comes with a digital camera, an EMF detector, a EVP recorder, and some other paranormal investigational gear he is willing to share whch also includes a Kirlain (?) camera.

If Boggs & Carter struck up any conversation in the previous story (Cup o Joe - A Rescue Story), they both know about their similar " interests ".

Ben would be close to Joe at the beginning of the night just to make sure he's " up for this. " Knowing that Joe is feeling a little " vengeful " he'll be keeping a close watch on Joe.

The drive to Tall Pines is quiet, dark and quiet. Street light and road signs are no existant so all the characters is as the result of the headlights on Ben's jeep. You arrive at the hosptial in about 20 minutes to see the large sign on the gate that says " Future sight of a CK Internaional reality investment. CK International, building a better, brighter tomorrow. " Just below that a sign that reads " NO TRESSPASSING! Violators will be persecuted to the fullest extent of the law! "

Any closer examnation of the main gate will reveal, it is in fact open and it also looks like a car came and went from here recently.

The hospital building itself lies another 1/4 mile up the driveway. There the party sees the decrepit old building that just sort of whispers out, " This is not a happy place. " This is prett much what the party sees.

Imagine if you will the name carved in stone above the main entrance " TALL PINES PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL " with graffiti on the old iron doors that reads " Abandon all hope ye who enter here. "

The one door is open with foot prints of a large group (6 to 7 individuals) leading in, and only one set leading back out...in a hurry.

PART 3 to come.

Ok, so we have another addition to the story; Mr. Gabriel Mathews will be joing the party for the asylum crawl.

That makes the party composed of Joe, Dr. Boggs, Gabriel, Holister, and Carter. (I will just need you to PM some details about you character Gabriel). Mr. Mathews will just be included in the dinner at The Brick (the last one to show just before Carter arrives). Gabriel will be staying in the motel in the room next to Boggs.

In addition, I believe has some "toys" he'ld like to bring along to test out, that works out great because that scanner thing you brought along to the " Bharghast hunt " worked great and probably saved our bacon. :-D

As for the third part part of the story, I will post that in a little while. Part 4 will be posted tomorrow. Any additional input on behalf of you guys is always welcome and I look foward working with yous guys again.

Here we are at part 3 ..& possibly 4.

The party as of now consists of Joe Smith, Doctor Boggs, Gabriel Mathews, Carter, & Holister.

Upon the party's arrival at Tall Pines, those open to the supernatural get that " strange sensation ". The closer to the hospital the party gets, the stronger and more sinister that feeling becomes. Upon reaching the doors, everyone should have a good case of the creeps, but any mediums, psi-sensitives, and the like, will know right of the bat that there is something horribly wrong with this place. They find themselves muttering

" This is no place of healing; it is a place of suffering and death. "

When asked of the psychic " What was that? " They have no recollection of what the just said.

Through the front doors the party proceeds. All gizmos and investigation equipment is handed out along with flashlights, bottled water, and mini-recorders. Holister instinctively checks his .45 sidearm out of habit and explains that more than once they had to chase derelicts out of this place.

Holister then goes on to tell the party some of the more notorous legends about Tall Pines. Since Ben was a local until the autumn of 1993, he knows some pretty grumesome tales. The worst of them is the story of Adam McNamara.

As legend/history has it, Adam was the only son to the (then) owner of the bank and a fairly sized overseas shipping buisness by the name of Ozbourne McNamara and his wife Marilyn. Ozbourne always wanted a son to carry on the McNamara family name and in 1971 got his wish. However, Adam was not a normal child.

You see Ozbourne was a bully, a heavy drinker, and a wife beater. His wife Marilyn was pregant once before, but it was discovered it was to be a girl, he quite literaly beat it out of her and had the physician " dispose of it with the rest of the medical waste ". Marilyn took up drinking after that, alot of drinking. Ozbourne was a bully and everyone in town knew it. It was because he controlled the bank, and in turn all the money, few people stood up to him. The sheiff at the time was told by the mayor to " Just ignore them domestic quarrels. "

So life went on until one day it was announced that Adam McNamara was born; a month premature but almost 15 lbs when born. His wife Marilyn was physically and mentally spent after that. It took her several months to fully recover while nurse maids took care of the baby.

Ozbourne went on with his work never knowing (or caring) that his son wasn't normal. It wasn't until the child was at the age of four that he began to suspect something was not right with the child. The child was pretty much a mongoloid. Ozbourne was furious that his one and only " heir " was not perfect. He was publically embrassed and went into fits of violent rage often. He kept the boy locked away in their home but it never changed things. He beat the boy often and demanded another child from his alcoholic wife.

People began to suspect Ozbourne was stealing from his own bank. Thousands of dollars were alledgedly missing and the dept of the treasury was called in. Ozbourne was trapped and under indictment for embezzlement, tax and insurance fraud, and money laundering. However, he was never prosecuted because several days before the feds would arrive to arrest him, Ozbourne McNamara was bludgeoned to death by his seven year old son Adam.

Then one day in the fall of 1978 the sheriff was asked to head out to the McNamara home because Ozbourne or his wife hadn't been seen in three days and a mysterious fire broke out in one of warehouses two nights earlier over in Boundbrook (the next town over). They arrived to find young Adam covered in blood sittng n the front step with bloodied fire place poker next to him. After investigating the house, they found what was left of Ozbourne pulverized in his study. The body of his wife Marilyn was found upstairs in bed; she was stabbed to death 37 times with a kitchen knife.

An investigation took place and Adam was locked away in Tall Pines. A seven year old mentally challenged boy, son of an abusive father and alcoholic mother, was put away in a hospital used for the criminally insane. Where he stayed until the night he escaped 16 years later; in 1994.

According to evidence and reports after the fact that have turned up over the years, much about the McNamaras came to sufface in the light of day. One fact was that it wasn't Adam's fingerprints on the knfe that was used to kill his mother. It was Ozbourne's. Another fact that the medical examiner couldn't wrap his mind around was how a seven year child had the strength to inflict the amount brute damage that was done to his father, yet it was Adam's fingerprints only on the poker. For years it was assumed that Adam saw his father kill his mother and finally snapped.

One other fact that was kept quiet; Marilyn gave birth less that 24 hours before she was murdered. Yet there were never any reports of another child. That remains a mystery to this very day.

Then in one night in the fall of 1994; Adam then 23; escape his capitivity and went on a killing spree that claimed the lives of over 30 people in the 36 hours he was running free. The official report only listed 18 victims, but never included the other 18 he butchered escaping the hospital including his doctor, several nurses and orderlies, and alot of patients.

It is said that Adam was tracked down to his old house and was finally shot dead by police (one of which was Ben's father - Sheriff Thomas Rutger Holister). The body was recovered and ordered back to Tall Pines for medical examination and disposal. SOme nonsense about him being a patient of the state so it was the state's responsibility. No ME's report was ever found, though a death certificate was printed up for the town records.
Adam's remains were supposedly cremated and his ashes placed in the McNamara family crypt in the Silent Rest cemetery just outside of town.

Other than a death certificate sgned off by a Tall Pines doctor (no one ever heard of), that was all the proof that Adam was dead.

Tall Pines was in the red prior to Adam's rampage. After that incident, the hospital was shut down and remained abandonned ever since. There have since been stries and urban legends that the hospital is haunted and that the ghost of Adam McNamara still roams the halls. The name Adam McNamara is considered the local bogey-man that older kids use to scare their younger siblings at night.

Then one night back in 2001, a group of several would be paranomal investigators from Miskatonic University went to the hopital. They were never heard from again. The investigation turned up nothing.

The back in 2004, a group of five teenagers spent Halloween night there. They also were never heard from again. The investigation turned up nothing, again.

At this point the party is on the second floor by the time Ben finishes his stories...

" And the first one that suggests splittin' up is gettin' left here. "

The investigation of the hospital should take all night seeing that it has 5 floors, 3 wings, and has 3 floors below it; the basement (offices and supply rooms mostly), the sub-cellar (maintenance, bolier, etc.), and then the cellar ward where the kept the most dangerous patients, including patient 312.

As the night progresses, the psychic's in the party will start to feel uneasy as it becomes more and more prominant that there are hundredsof souls here not at rest. Twisted minds plagued with madness and torment. Any psychic who willingly " opens themself " to the supernatural energy of the hospital will be overwhelmed with a psychic tsunami of horrific images and emotions before blacking out for several minutes.

This is where I need input - If the party decides to leave at that moment, that is fine. If the party decides to stay and continue to investigate, all the better.

Mr.Matthews (I like the sound of that) appears very on edge. Looking around quickly, frequently checking behind him.

He reaches back into his jacket pocket and pulls out a small pocket flashlight and surveys the area around him.
"I say we split up" he tries to joke to comfort himself in response to Ben.

Gabriel reaches into his left breast pocket on his jacket and retrieves a pack of gum. Before getting himself a piece he holds the pack outward to the group. "Want one?" he asks.

Not long later (Whenever convenient): Wishing he knew what lurked just beyond the shadows and wondering if anything was actually there he inadvertently opens himself up hoping to sense some emotion, or indication of something (empathy). As a result... he's first up for the psychic tsunami

Here is part 4

Sorry for the delay (RL stuff). :o

Well the party stops for about a half hour so that the psychic can catch their breath and speak about what the saw

1) There are over 300+ tormented spirits trapped here.

2) There is much pain, suffering, and death (empathy)

3) They are not going to find anyone alive in this place and that something horrible happened here recently.
(a very strong feeling of fear, panic, and death).

4) There is someone or something else here, something that holds the others spirits here, something [i]evil.[i] (feelings of rage, violence, madness, and fear) followed by an image of a dark corridor with a bloodied iron door at the end with the number 312 upon it.

At that time if anyone had been using the recorders, taking pcitures, or using special investigative equipment, now would be the time for them to check their equipment.

Their are multiple EVPs, temperature and EMF fluxs all over the place, random cold spots, occaisonal items that were caught moving on their own, strange lights and sounds, and even a few ectoplasmic manifistations caught on tape. Anyone experienced in the field of paranormal investigation knows that this a massive authentic haunting.

Once the psychic(s) have regained their composure the party can move on the finish exploring the fourth and fifth floors. The same evidence still takes place all around. Again nothing harmful or physical, but even the non psychics would start to feel the overwhelming sense of forboading and dread hanging in the air like heavy fog.

Once the party makes its ways down to the first floor, they notice the door is closed and chained fom within.
After a few moments of shock and several attempts to gets the doors open, it is apparent that the party is not getting out the same way that they came in.

Any psychic or magical attempt to open the doors will be met with a sensation of resistance, as though something does not want the party to leave.

After a brief discussion about what to do next, Ben pulls out a floorplan from his jacket pocket and shines a flashlight over it. There are three more doors on this level and it turns out there is another exit in the basement, exiting from a private entrance directly to the cellar ward.

Much to his own disapproval it is suggetsed that everyone go try to find an open door somewhere on this floor.
Though their are none.

(Why am I doing this? so that your PCs can have at least one individual haunting encounter of your own creation to tell about on Lazlo).

Afterwards the party regroups, realizes the only way out is through the basement, and talks about the encounters they had (if they choose to). They then make their way down into to the basement levels of the hospital.

If any of the players involved would like to include ideas for random haunting encounters, please leave your imput. I love collaborative works with you guys. :D

 If Joe pointgs out the " side effects " of his " Spook Light " Ben probably would recommend against using unless absolutely necessary.

As for the basement levels (think " House on Haunted Hill; the one with Ali Larter & Ty Diggs). Complete with shock therapy rooms, submersion tank, padded cells, and the " Psychostrobe Chamber ". The feeling of evil, suffering, fear, and death is much stronger in these lower levels than anywhere else. Each room holds tormented spirits, destined to be forever tortured by unseen captors. Eachr ooms emits a forbaoding sense of physical agony and mental anquish, with an underlying feeling of sinister delight.

Any psychics in the party will sense the distict presense that there is deffinitely something " down here with them, watching. Something..not human...not a ghost...but something evil. An almost overwhelming sense of madness, not from one twisted mind, but hundreds.

The party continues deeper and deeper into the bowels of the huanted asylum, nerves on edge, senses sharp to anything that would appear as a threat. That is when they come one of the " opperating rooms ". Inside they find a bloodied opperating table, several bloodied surgical tools (the older more frightening ones), and blood pools upon the floor, walls, and ceiling. To the disturbing horror of the party, the blood appears fresh, quite fresh. Any psychics that enter into this room can see the past events of this room, the horrors that took place, and the recent deaths of the men from CK International who dared to enter this acursed place.

The psychic would see a large man(?) in a lab coat and a burlap sack with a single eye hole cut out over his head. He uses the tools not with percision, but with the grace of a butcher obsessed. Again a flash of a bloodied metal door with the number 312 upon it. The trance is broken by a scream...from somewhere down in the dark depths.

The party continues to the next level.

Ok here we are...second to last chapter.

The party makes its down further into the depths of the asylum. The air is rank and reeks of dampness and age. Rusty water drips from overhead pipes and the occasional rat scurries off into the shadows. You have arrived into The Cellar Ward.....

It was here that the most dangerous and depraved souls were kept. Abominations of both the mind and body. It was here these wretched souls became the perfect subjects for the inhuman experimentation that took place. Their screams of agony would go unheard and their suffering would continue for years.

It is here that the party confronts the evil at the very heart of Tall Pines Asylum. Any psychic would feel it, the evil begining to take form and erupt from the very diseased core of this place.

As the party exploes the Cellar Ward, they find pools of fresh blood that lead off to no where. Doors that have been bolted shut with skeletal remains locked away within. Within this maze of corridors and rooms the party comes across a bolted door marked " No Entrance ". The psychic in the party feels what lurks beyond that door, the very black heart at the center of this acursed place lies beyond that door. The very thing that has enslaved these poor souls so that they may never rest.....

Suddenly the psychic without cause or reason starts to tear at the door, beating, pounding at it, begging for it to be open beofe " HE " returns. The party joins in as Ben keeps watch. Soon the doors is unbolted and riped open. Inside lies a grizzly sight.

Inside the room, beyond the bolted door, lies a laboratory of horrors. In the center of the room is a machine of rusted iron, cables, knobs, and cervos. It is the dark heart. Not one of flesh and blood, but one of iron and energy. Somehow, someway this horrid device has imprisoned these souls here. The psychic draws near, pushing past the others as if obsessed and touches it.....

The vision dates back many decades, perhaps centuries. The device was the mad dream of a twisted mind who began to construct it. Even after his own death, his depraved soul possessed one after another throughout the years to see his device completed. One madening thought echoing throughout his deranged mind, " I too can harvest souls, then I too must be equal to God. "

The psychic steps back, one name comes to his lips....Lennox Blackthorne.

It was all a lie. This place, this device. It was a madman's plan to harness the souls of the dead for power.

That is when an echo can heard down the twisting corridor...the sound of metal against stone. At the end of the hall...a door blows open....a cold drab bloodied iron door with the number 312 upon it. Adam has come.....

With each floor, and each room getting creepier and creepier, Gabriel keeps stuffing stick after stick of gum in his mouth until he's chewing on quite the wad.

After splitting up Mr.Matthews will no longer have his gum, obviously appear disturbed and upset and more focused/driven to get to the bottom of this. If asked about what had happened he will sharply make it known that he does not wish to discuss it at that time.

Well, after touching the device, getting his little flash of insight and hearing the echoes down the hall, Mr.Matthews says a little prayer for strength (suppress fear), looks around for something to use as a weapon (a piece of the device will work if he can break something off) and prepares himself for the worst. If he cannot find anything... well... it's all about his fists... and if those don't work... he can always try reasoning with them :)

Now if no bodies are found Gabriel will be almost foolishly driven to look for them after this whole ordeal. Afterall, all that was found was blood, and a scream was heard so that must mean that someone was alive "Maybe we can get to them in time!". Others will need to be persistent to convince him that nothing can be done, after which he will sadly acknowledge that they're right.

Ok guys...here it finally is. The final chapter.

Within the dark and dank corridor the party can hear metal being dragged across the cold stone floor. Ben can be heard saying; " Cypress Cove sheriff's department, put the weapon down and stand back! " No response, the party would be able to get the doorway in time to hear him repeat himself with more intensity with his .45 leveed at a figure approaching in the darkness; " This is the Cypress Cove sheriff's department, put the weapon down and stand back! "

In the shadows, lurching foward a hulking brute standing almost seven feet high wearing a bloodied lab coat and a dingy burlap sack over his head with a single eye hole cut out. In the brute's left hand an old bloodied fire axe.
At about 15 feet away the brute stops his walk, lifts his head up, and suddenly raises the axe. Ben shoots once, direct hit, center mass. The figure just stands there, looks down, then up, and throws the axe at Ben...it misses by mear inches as it cuts deep into the wooden backside of the chamber door, also missing Joe's & Bogg's head by inches as well.

With thinking, Ben shoots three more times at the brute. Again, direct hits center mass. The figure drops to the floor with a thud. Ben turns his head slightly to see if everyone is alright. Boggs by this point has his Browning 9mm drawn and Joe has his weapon ready as well. Carter and Gabriel are looking for a means to defend themselves as well, but something about the device keeps drawing Gabriel's attention....something has lead him here..drawn him here. The voices, the visions....a soft woman's voice calls out him like a heavenly angel from above; " The device is the key. It must be destroyed. "

Within moments the brute is back on his feet; Ben, Joe, and Boggs shoot several more times at the shape but to no prevail as it moves closer to their position. Boggs suggests " a strategic retreat " and urges everyone back into the room. No sooner than Ben & Joe get the door closed and sealed the pounding on the otherside begins.

Joe states that " The door won't hold that thing at bay for long. " Ben nods, looks at Carter for answers.

Carter looks at the others, rubs his head, and says, " I believe that the maniac on the other side of the door is a manifestation of some kind. A physical representation of the evil and madness that occured here. Sort of a supernatural watch dog created by this place in order to deal with unwanted tresspassers I'm assuming.

Boggs looks at Carter - " So how do we stop it then? "

Carter replies, " I don't know if we can. Your bullets have no affect as it is like shooting at smoke. Banishing it may work, but I doubt it because this place created it so its already here where it originated. "

That is when Gabriel would turn and look at everyone; " This device is the cause. That thing out there was created by this device to protect it. The spirits of this place are trapped here because of this thing as well. If we destroy it, we destroy that thing out there and set these tortured souls free. " He runs overs, grabs the fire axe from the door and darts back to the device, " Please help me, that door won't hold Adam back for long. " and he swings the axe, causing sparks as the blade his the device.

At this point Carter and Joe go help to destroy the device while Boggs & Ben watch the door that is slowly being bashed into match wood.

Slowly Gabriel, Joe, and Carter start tearing into the machine. Ripping at hoses, tearing out cables, smashing anything they can to stop the device. Carter asks Gabriel " what is going to happen when we destory this thing? Doesn't it contain the spiritual energy of over 300 trapped spirits inside of it? "

With that, a realization dawns....destroying the device would be like seeting off a spiritual energy equivalant of a bomb. Once it is destroyed, the party wouldn't have much time to escape. Every second would have to count.
With that in mind, everyone agrees that the device must be destroyed regardless of the consequences.

The door then shatters apart as Adam busts into the room. Boggs gets a shot or two off before being backhanded by the brute sending him sprawling to the floor. Ben tries to shoot but has his arm grabbed upwards so the shot misses as a massive hand clenches around his throat. Joe sees what's happening, grabs a piece of the broken machine and lunges at Adam, smashing him across the back with a piece of iron. Adam drops a choking Ben and turns toward Joe. Joe sees in Adam nothing but evil, the same evil that (private info not to be divulged) and begins to beat Adam like a man possessed repeatedly with the iron rod all the while screaming out " DIE DIE DIE!!! ".

Back at the machine Gabriel is able to break open the spherical iron core of the device. Inside are countless imprissoned souls, and at the center, a beautiful young woman bathed in haunting blue azure. She looks at Gabriel....." Thank you may savior. We can now rest in peace. " With that the device shakes violently and the room quakes....suddenly the trapped spirit erupts from the device like lava from a volcano, flooding the rooms and washing over the party.

Countless spirits pass through Adam, immobilizing him as Joe brings the iron up and impales him through what what be his heart....the brute drops to his knees and simply vanishes like smoke on the wind. Boggs has gotten to his feet, goes over and helps Ben get to his, turns to the others and says " I believe its time we move along now, would you agree. "

The party makes a mad dash for the door, makes their way down the corridor, and finds the special entrance into the cellar ward. All around them the building shake violent and debris falls. Hundreds of spirits are making a mass exodus around the party....finally free and exactly a just revenge against the place that held them prisoner for so long. The party get to the locked door, Boggs tries the latch and it " miracuously " opens.
The party makes their way into the adjoining tunnel and runs upward some 40 feet to another door that appears open with daylight just beyond.

Once outside, the heroes can see the old hospital implode upon itself, collapsing into a heap of rubble as the last of the spirits make their way skyward to their final rest. One spirit remains and approaches the party, it is the woman from the device. Her azure glows washes over the party, healing their wounds and comforts their souls. Inside their minds they hear her voice, " My name is Fiona. Thank you all. This place of darkness created by my my husband Lennox all those years ago has finally fallen to the light. May you all find the peace you rightfully deserve. "

With that said she disperses into twinkling lights and vanishes. The party then returns to Ben's jeep and returns to town for some breakfast and a few well earned drinks at The Brick.

The End.
