I use Mercs quite a bit, my fav. OCC to use is the Spec Forces one.
I have campaign where A NG Spec forces Mechanic hooks up w/ NEMA special Missions squad that she found in stasis, they call them selves Zulu squad. The NEMA crew conisist of 1 Mil Spec Cyborg, 1 Para Arcane, 1 NEMA Field Engineer and 2 Roscoes cross trained to pilot SAMAS. The rest of the crew are the NG Spec Forces Mechanic and a dimensionally rifted white German Shepard Dog Doy trained as Merc Special Forces.
The running joke is that the CS suspects something is up, but due to their use of that particular mechanics shop during the Tolkeen war most of the officers and soldiers take a "Zulu squad? We don't talk about Zulu squad." approach.
Due to her obtaining the Library of Congress database, she is now relegated to the status of "plot device".

Mercs are where it's at.

Mercs are what does the Rifts world good.

Mercs are in demand in your local area; hire one now!

Also, Mercs are my favorite as well. I have trouble even thinking of Rifts outside of a Merc mentality.

I have only gotten to play in one mercs campaign, but it was awesome. We got to start with a certain number of men and outfit them with our allotted credits, he didn't use the book's system for unit generation, the PCs were the leaders and specialists. It only lasted about 6 months, was a lot of work on the GM as far as coming up with enemies; and battles and such took a long time, but was an interesting change from the norm.

Merc=Gold.

I am seriously contemplating running a Merc game in the near future, if the others in the group feel like playing it, and they better, or else I'm comin after them in my NG-11F Red Hawk. :D

*edit*

I've not actually run a Rifts game yet. I have run Palladium Fantasy, BTS1/2, and a bit of Chaos Earth. I have access to Mercenaries and Merc Ops, I have RUE, RMB, BOM, and GMG. Any other suggestions on what I should buy, beg, or borrow bookwise?

Although I'd played Rifts before, I bought my first Rifts books in 1995. I bought two the Rifts Main Book and Rifts: Mercenaries. To this day they are still my two favorites. Not just because of sentimental value, but mostly due to content. They each have my favorite character classes.

P.S. Look at my avatar. What book is it from?

I have been a gm and a player in Rifts and I have to say I love the idea of a Merc game. I have even worked on my own company and it is killer. Sourcebook one is a good one for some villainous minions (in my opinion nothing beats a shifter for a lead villain) and Dark Conversions is very good for witches (tough call on my favorite but I lean toward the Shifter). The Siege on Tolkeen series Daemonix were ultra cool, and Mindwerks is great for the brodkil. You should really check those out.

Mercenaries added sooo much more content to the world than Sourcebook 1 did. SB1 provided more information (such as CS unit sizes), a smattering of equipment, a couple of nifty power armors and robot vehicles, an adventure that could only be run once, robot creation rules, and a few enemies. Mercs added Mercenary Company Creation Rules, new OCC's, a TON of new equipment for several companies, new arms manufacturers (GAW, Naruni, Iron Heart, etc.), tanks, planes, helicopters, water craft (allowing you to take your adventures to the seas finally), cheap power armors/robot vehicles (Chipwell), new Coalition vehicles, AND an adventure scenario. Granted it was four dollars more, but well worth it (don't get me wrong, SB1 was worth the money as well)

PS
Where can I find updated information concerning CS units after the Coalition War Campaign came out (i.e. equipment load outs for the various units, the different types of Mechanized Recon Units, the various Mechanized S&D Units, etc.). Has one been done?
