Where geographically is Century Station?

Unread post by knightgoblin »

I know Century Station is like Washington D.C. and not located in one single state. But where exactly is it? West coast, east coast, Michigan?

It was left purposefully vague. That way it is where ever you need it to be :)

That's Great! I think I'll put it just north of San Francisco. I wonder what I'll do about the map problem. Maybe I'll just make North, South  :?:

By placing it in San Francisco (or near San Fran), you could also replace Alcatraz with Gramercy Island (an obvious switch, as Gramercy is based on Alcatraz). Or you could have Century Station as an almost sister city to San Francisco, a mirror image if you will, with both cities having a maximum security penitentiary for dealing with super-powered beings.

I think it's wherever you want it to be. I've recently rejiggered it to be Brisbane, Queensland. Gramercy Island has become St Helena Island, for example. Surprisingly it has worked out quite well.
I'd get up in the morning and watch the sun rise over the yardarm of my sky-ship as the sails billowed in the breeze and the land slid by 300-odd metres below. I'd grasp the mahogany ship's wheel, turn her nose a few points back onto the line, and feel pity for all those poor bastards below who have to work for a living. - My idea of the good life in Rifts.

I always figured it to be somewhere in the Midwest.

About 50 miles past Springfield, near the state that Springfield is in.

Nice......that could be both a Simpsons reference and GI Joe reference LOL

Hurricanes also hit the Gulf Coast and Hawaii.

Technically? Hurricanes only happen in the Atlantic. Typhoons happen in the Pacific. Unless the weatherman is from the other ocean. Accurately? There is no difference. A Typhoon is a Hurricane like a Tsunami is a Tidal Wave and vice versa.
Actually, the naming system isn't that cut and dry; I actually got the impression its a hemisphere thing, not an ocean thing, as there have been Hurricanes to hit the west coast of the Americas, though that's not very common. And there are places that term them Cyclones or Tropical Cyclones rather than either Typhoon or Hurricanes. Regardless, the storms that hit Hawaii are called Hurricanes. For example, in 2009 Hurricane Neki caused some damage.

The name Diego Verde (Verde is Spanish for Green) suggest Spanish influence so that tells me
East Coast, unless you invert the map and put it in California. It was also a pirate haven, so it
has to be a coastal city. Pirates I'm pretty sure didn't sail up the St. Laurence River and into
the Great Lakes, unless they did so after the Erie Channel.

I've considered playing it on the coast of Florida but by the state line of Georgia. Also considered having it be an island off the coast there.

Well, how bout this for a tie in? Have it be on the coast in Florida where the Bermuda Triangle is.. That way you can tie any number of events to the city, as well as explain the higher than average magic flowing through the area. Wanna rift to open above your characters - no problem...

Interesting idea.

This thread had helped me decide on it being one of the new concepts for a floating man made island that is anchored to the bottom of the sea. It is in the future so why not?

Sounds almost like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Raft_%28comics%29

Good idea though, and it makes sense - place the criminals in a place where they would have difficulty escaping. Even if they did escape the prison itself, they'd have to figure out how to make it back to the mainland.

Is it just me, or does Chicago get used A LOT for HU? I'm using it in DOANE, NMI is using it in Invasion, and I know several other GM's and players who are currently there in one form or another. Is it just because it's so centralized in North America?

Not only is it centralized, but its placement near the Great Lakes gives it a decent amount of varying terrain and access.. Plus, let's face it - everyone loves good ol' Gotham..

Nope.. Gotham is Chicago, and New York is Metropolis (at least in the comics..)

EDIT: Actually after looking around, Gotham is considered to be an amalgam of New York and Chicago.. I do know that Metropolis is specifically supposed to be New York though..

According to wikipedia:

Wikipedia, disambiguation for Gotham wrote:Gotham, a nickname for New York City, first used by Washington Irving in 1807 in his satirical periodical Salmagundi;
Gotham City, fictional home of DC Comics' Batman

When you look up Gotham City in Wikipedia:

Wikipedia, article for Gotham City wrote:Gotham City ( /ˈɡɒθəm/ goth-əm) is a fictional U.S. city appearing in DC Comics, best known as the home of Batman. Batman's place of residence was first identified as Gotham City in Batman #4 (Winter 1940). Gotham city is a hybrid of the real cities New York and Chicago, with some representations favoring one over the other.

So, technically, we're both right. :D

I feel like modern day cities Gotham could almost be Detroit... crime and the police/government have little hope of fixing things.

Yeah, I guess that's as good an excuse as any.. Many times I use my city as well (Winnipeg) just for familiarity. No huge lakes in the city, but we're not too far from major bodies of water. We do however have what we call the Forks - a national heritage park where the Red River and Assiniboine River meet. I use this location as a nexus point of 2 converging ley lines.. lots of magic in this area..

I placed on the coast between north and south Carolina. North of Myrtle Beach S.C. and south of Wilmington N.C.. I mean nothing else is there. It fits.
