As long as it had real repercussions on the character's performance(-1 action/attack per melee, or -10% to skill rolls because of the distraction)...otherwise the real jerk players just ignore what the GM does to them(if it's only 'cosmetic') and keep being jerks.... :|

That's when you penalize them in XP for poor roleplaying.
We have a guy playing the 'Strong, Silent Type' Special Forces sort. It basically lets him get away with doing nothing outside of combat, so the GM is has to started penalizing him in XP for making my character do all the talking.

with me and my games i always leave up the punishment of the annoying pc to other pcs (with my input of course.) i fell it gets the point across a lot a better.an example of this is if we have a magic user in the group ill let him mess around wih said pc, like using telakenests to pull out a chair out from him as they would sit down, or put some farie food in there food or drink (its in one of the PF books) they have differet effect like turn a person purple (perminatly this was used on one of my friends pcs he pissed off the magic user who had a friend who get him just about anything) he woke up the next day purple it was funny as all heck.

I think you undercut your own priorities with 'punishments'. For some, its no more a punishment than losing a piece in chess. For others, it means they quit their version of roleplay, simply because the GM's version of roleplay is different and the GM thinks that difference warrants punishment.

Start a game with people either deciding some character goals, or they just don't play. If you let in a player who's character has no goals and turns out to be a sociopath character, there is something you could do about that, but didn't.

We had a Psycho-Juicer who decide he wanted to go solo hunting in Hades. He ended up captured and almost having his @$$ plundered by a bunch of demon worshipers. After his rescue he found out that the demon worshipers had thrown his Juicer harness into a lava river. so he had to got through Detox in Hell.

Had a GM once who came up with an interesting idea. He had an NPC curse our problem player so every time he pulled his weapon, whatever it was, he instead got a butter knife. Boom Gun!....errrrr butter knife? CP-40!...errr butter knife?!? Lol, classic.

I remember that there was a mind melter in one of our games that had a habit of 'psyching' women into bed.
Tried that with the wrong lady, and wound up with a very large, symbiotic STD.

If you're familiar with GWAR, think Cuttlefish of Cthulu, and it didn't like the Mind Melter.
Blade with whom I have lived.
Blade with whom I now die.
Serve right and justice one last time.
Seek one last heart of evil.
Still one last life of pain.
Cut well old friend...
and then farewell.

Same problem in a 'Cyberpunk' game, only the woman had a cybersnake implant for a tongue.
The PC's punishment was decidedly more painful when he realized what had his tongue wrapped tight, he couldn't exactly tell the rest of his team what the problem was(nor could the rest of us really do anything without seriously maiming him).
All in all, though, he was lucky. The previously time the GM had used that particular trick on a lothario character, the results were far more ...terminal.

I tend to do in game consequences for rash actions and make them related to the action in question.

I tend to find the player acting like a douche tends to manifest in the character also acting like a douche.

I punish the character for his douchery and move on.

If the player is a douche towards us out of character . . . well we'll probably stop playing with them.

Last one I did to the player who designed his character to be a jerk (so he could say it was playing in character) was a mutating curse, anytime he gets too close to a fire the flame turns black and explodes and then he wakes up with the curse mutated. one time he instantly fell asleep at night, then after trying to cook something, fell asleep during the day (the last mutation) now he is trying to get around without getting near fire... not easy when you are only awake at night, (note he's an elf so he does have nightvision, but others still use torches)

Well, for me, the funniest punishment in a game (of another PC) wasn't a Palladium product, nor was it by the GM.

A few years ago, my buddy was running Hackmaster. He had just allowed in his friend and his wife. Let me tell ya, the wife may have inspired some Shakespeare. She actually told my buddy, during game AND multiple times, that she would be at the next session due to a hangover. She also metagamed and bullied her husband and a 13 year old kid we gamed with.

We finally had the last straw when she killed the kid's character when he was temporarily transformed into a grub, AND she killed his protege before he could get him into the game. This actually caused the kid to start crying, because he actually thought the group hated him (I know... I know.... 13 and crying.. being "too old"). She then proceeded to say "The little **** deserved it!"

Well, another friend of ours was gonna join the game as a rogue or an assassin (I forgot which it was). Drunkie had tried to take down a monster whose sense of touch was switched with mine (there's a normal Hackmaster monster with that ability) by kicking it in the crotch with boots that made groin shots much more effective. I had decided to hire the new PC for 40,000 gold to assassinate this oerson and make sure she couldn't be resurrected.

The assassin kills the husband's PC (BTW, he did not do a thing to rein her in, not even saying the slightest thing) and hides the corpse in a bag of holding. The assassin the proceeds to change her appearance with a hat of disguise. Drunkie then metagames by going up to the person she's never seen before, and asking to look inside "his" bag of holding, looking for the husband's character's corpse. Long story short, Drunkie is assassinated, stored in the bag of holding, then burned to ash in a nearby swamp and spread to the four winds. Our groups cleric didn't have any spells that could help.

Ultimately, Drunkie and husband quit (because Drunkie said he couldn't be there if she wasn't), kid is reinstated as a PC, and the assassin character is suddenly a party favorite :D

The phantom jock strap itch is genius I commend you.

Worse punishment I had was playing under a totally retarded GM some time back. We took 4 hours (real time) to cross a road. Once we crossed said road we have to dig through 50 year old excrement. Once we dug through said excrement we were starving from our hard work. All that we found was a 50 year old corpse. The only thing left on the 50year old corpse were his testicles. After eating said testicles a spider monster lept out and injected my brain with eggs (no rolls needed in his game!). I died.

Never did play with that GM again!
