Spell Research Question

Greetings!

I was wondering about the Spell Research Rules from Through the Glass Darkly;
If a Dark Day Earth Sorcerer tried to Research a Spell not found on the Nightbane Spell List, but it DOES exist in Rifts (Meteor for example), or a Ley Line Walker wanted to Research Ritual: Call Creature of Light, which method is correct: Basic Spell Research-the Spell does exist somewhere so it's just reverse-engineering it, OR is it Creating a New Spell-Because it IS new, to your reality/Dimension? The Time to make the effort and the Percentage Chance for Success is determind by the method.

Thank you for your aid,
GaredBattlespike

Unfortunately that is something only the GM of the game has the right to make the calling.

Having said that...
I would put it in the "you are creating a spell that is a spell you know about" or to put it "existing spells".

Greetings!

Thanks drewkitty. I kinda thought that might be the answer, but I like confermation.

Unless the spell in question is a part of the flavor of the setting, such as summon nightprince for nightspawn, I do not place limits on which book spells are gotten from. Spells that other people have created, as those in the fan created spell topic, would not get the "existing" label. And they require just a little bit more attention when vet'ing the char.

If I were to GM this, I'd say if he didn't have an in-character reason to know of the spell already I'd treat it as a new spell.

Or a very common sense spell, a la Ventriloquism was for many years, not an official RIFTS-verse spell, but has been a part of PalFantasy since inception. Likewise a strength spell (Stength of Utgard Loki in PF, nothing iirc in RIFTS).

But as Dewkitty said, if more verse-specific other than your own, then it's a "created" spell.
