TW Item creation and Spell to gem listing.

So I hate how the listing for the gems and spells are grouped by the gems.

Has anybody typed up a list that has all the spells in alphabetical order with the needed gem listed after each spell? Is there a listing pinned here somewhere that I cannot find?

This way if I want to know what gem I need for say the spell mental blast I can look up mental blast instead of going through every gem til I find mental blast listed under hmm lets see...2 minutes later... found it under tiger eye.

This does seem like an obvious oversight...

The pretty way to do it would be a spreadsheet with a pivot table, I suppose.

I spend most of my time in vim, so I'd probably just type it up and use text search to find what I want.

The real question is if I type it up, am I allowed to post it?

Unfortunately, no. This question came up a while back and the powers that be decided against it.

No problem. I knew it would pay off having cut and pasted that out to a word file when it was first posted.

Panomas wrote:An annoying technicality I know,

But Mack or any other mod didn’t approve it being posted.

And didn’t yet disprove or approve for you guys to send it openly, to each other via PM

I wouldn’t guess it was ok to openly PM things that are TM, nor post them.

Which is the reason why after I posted (even though I originally got it approved to post first) that it was taken down. And I decided to not PM it those that asked for it-because the company had in effect said-No it’s not ok. . . .

I’m I wrong?

Mack?

I'm pretty sure that PM is OK its only posting it in open forum that is not... hence why the entire thread still exists and has not be deleted. ;)

It’s all rather semantic.

The list is actually fairly useless unless you also have the R:UE and the Book of Magic.

That’s true, aye.

Sorry, but I was talking about the forums’ rules.

Like I said, it’s largely semantic. If I give it out in a hundred private messages it’s different than posting it for thousands to take. If you want a moderator’s attention, I don’t know, report yourself. :)

Just type what's in RUE into a text editor and then use search to look for specific spells. Doesn't require any sort of organization to make useful. Just the time it takes for type that section of the book into the computer.

This is one of the places where a PDF version of the book would be handy.

Though you’re right in that; it’s proper to take this thread down if the company disagrees with it. And this is the only point I will say makes any sense in response to what I wrote ealier.

The fact that the list is useless without some of the books does not change the fact, that the "list" is still technically Palladium's derivative property. And therefore something (I believe) you should, ask first if you should so choose distribute it, especially on the company's own web forum.

The point I am making is that I originally put the list up for everyone to use (after making sure it was ok to do so), then the list was taken down, because Palladium mods felt the list infringed upon company copy write.

If the list violated the copy write as to what we can and cannot share-then how is PMing that same list to those who ask for it, on the company website, not the same infringement?

And being "pretty sure," its ok--is not the same as asking a mod first if it is in fact ok-- and making sure.

I am interested to see what an actual mod has to say on this matter.

Because posting in open forum is "public" and therefore "publication" of a sort. PMs are private and therefore are not "publication". Kapeesh?

The difference has been explained. Or are you looking to be convinced?

Sharing in private messages is considered “fair use” by the owner.

So you beleive, it's ok to share material deemed part of copywritten material in private-Just not in public?
Thats fine-I don't. specifically in this case becuase the list that I posted was deemed inapropriate-I just fail to see the difference, to me its the same thing-(and I would like someone to explain the difference)-whether in private or in public you are still sharing information that is part of the companies intelictual property-

This is the point I'm making, and why I feel its wrong-to me (again) there is no difference.

The fact that no mod has shut this thread down should prove (those of you sharing) correct. I suppose it is ok.
I am just suprised that it is being allowed-for the points I have already made.
Do you let your gaming group read your Palladium books or has your GM ever let you read his books? If so you have just done what you said you believe its NOT OK to do. You have shared copywritten material in a private manner.
Giving your friend your personal work of compileing a list is not the same as distributing it for EVERYONE on the net to see... if you cannot grasp this difference then there is nothing i can say to help you. Sorry

It certainly is not private. The key phrase here is fair use. If 1000 private messages is considered fair, then it is fair. If laying 1000 copies on a table for anyone to take is considered unfair, then it is unfair. If that does not make sense, and I do not think that it does*, it is irrelevant. It is not for you or me or anyone but the owner to decide.

* that said, I can see that there might be some rationale here. How many people have asked for it? Let us 20 or go higher and say 50. That takes a positive effort on the part of 50 people. Whereas if it is posted upon the forums it requires no positive effort on the part of 100s or 1000s to get that information.

Panomas wrote:Thinyser,

I accept your apology.

The fact that someone is saying hey-I’ve got a certain list (that was originally taken down by the company’s forum) just PM me if you want it. No longer makes it private (right because were all reading it-Now there is a thread in this forum that if you want this certain list you only have to PM somebody to get it.

If you want to PM your buddy solely (not create a thread about it) then that’s different.

I'm done.

-Just don't forget to thank me as well-becuase the list you guys are sharing was done by me-

Muhahahaha!!!

Which reminds me, everyone who got the list should thank Panomas. I just saved the list when it was originally up. :-D

Enough already. This has strayed far from a Rifts discussion.

I tried to politely ignore this topic and allow a few people to privately exchange a little information if they wished. But since this topic has devolved into a business/copyright discussion, it's no longer appropriate for this forum.

Topic Locked.
