Anvil Dwarves; head banging against the wall moment.

So I was reading about them and they seemed like a good match to be techno smithies, then when I got down to their "O.C.C.s" section, I nearly facepalmed myself out of my chair.

It says they can be anything... except for magical ones?! WHAT?! :frust:

Okay, I'm not claiming to be the lord and master of dwarves, but... hear me out. They were the ones that supposedly made rune weapons... and that's magic... and sure it's listed for them as the exception, and that's cool. But, I started to think about the UWW, and dwarves made a whole metric f'k ton of ships, weapons, armor that were techno wizard in their descriptions. How else would they even be able to construct those big dwarven battleships(or that asteroid that eats other ones, you know the one I'm talking about) that came to save the day when the splugorth were handing the elves and "humans/others" their butts all those years ago? Anyone else see the piece of metal stuck in these cogs? I mean, if they can't be techno smithies, or techno wizards, or anything magical, why are they even /part/ of the UWW? I could just be over thinking this, and I'm /attempting/ to keep things someone cannon so I don't end up with just the material and throwing house rule after house rule into my games, but, sheesh...

It is in the Anvil Galaxy, and...

Well, maybe they create rune items (ie. factories and docks) that create the actual magic stuff...

However, the problem with it is that rune item creation is "REALLY BAD"...

Errrrryeaaaah... mean, rune weapons require souls... so I don't see them pumping them out, not to mention the whole alignment issue needed to /make/ them, though even that I feel is retarded. Good people to sacrifice themselves for the better/bigger cause? Why is this not an option? Volunteering to become effectively freaking immortal. Anyways, no, crazy as an idea as that, it's clearly stated in the dimension books that the anvil dwarves created things like the rift projection cannon, their ships, etc. And another section on what the difference in UWW ships are, like, elves, dwarves, and the "human" side to it which is more TW-Trek than cast iron ships in space and crystal stuff. So I call shenanigans.

On the subject of people voluntarily sacrificing themselves to create a rune weapon. There is precedent for this in Rifts: Japan. The book mentions condemned men looking for redemption and ancient Samurai sacrificing themselves at the end of their lives to create a new katana and or wakizashi. I see no reason why such practices must be exclusive to the Japanese.

I say ignore it! I suspect it was a carry over from PFRPG where dwarves have forsaken magic. Considering that there are dwarves iron ships, I picture them being created by techno smithies. In fact dwarves are what inspired the techno smithies.

Just my opinion, but ultimately up to your GM.

I seem to remember the Conversion book listing Techno-Wizard as an OCC option for dwarves, but noting that 'traditional' dwarves looked at them with great concern fearing that they might be at risk of somehow backsliding into runesmithing. Clearly dwarves in Phase World have gotten over that nonsense or never had it to begin with and have Techno-Wizard as a common profession.

Yeah, yet again Bill Coffin getting his signals mixed in his works. Don't get me wrong; he is an excellent writer but some of the stuff in Anvil galaxy was ummmmmm :erm:
I.E.; "Minotaurs are a mainstay of the Warlock Marines and are noble honourable members of the UWW..."
Alignment? Miscreant, Anarchist & Abberant... uhhhh? :badbad: :thwak:

Then there are the Zebuloids in the Republik... oh dear gods.

So yeah... nice book but FLAWED.

Yeah, I basically foddered that out of their OCC choices, it doesn't make a lick of sense, as well as the Minotaurs too. Thanks guys, I just needed someone besides my players to toss this against a wall.

Which brings up the fact, that the Republik - while one of my favourites - is a bit oversized (ie. goes against the numbers - population, etc) of DMB2, but what the hell...
