the mask goes over both the nose and the mouth. Otherwise it doesn't work.

I'm a teacher and i see naked noses all the time, even with people who are otherwise fanatical with wearing masks in public. So tighten those ear straps as best you can to keep it from slipping down. It also helps to wear the top of it a bit higher on the bridge of the nose so the bottom doesn't catch on the chin and get pulled down as often.

I've got a few extra head strap adapters if need be too, to tension non-adjustable types and take pressure off the ears.
