Ok, so I recently scored a copy of Mercenary adventures and had am amusing thought.
Temporal Warrior right off his 6/10/14 year apprenticeship enrolls in Combat mage school. What's another 2 years for a guy at that point? Plus the two year tour would be a) easier than 6 years of being a Raider's flunky and b) worth it just for the spells, forget the OCC abiities.

Re: Combat Magic and the Temporal Warrior
Pick up combat spells as they level up? Sure. Learn a few spells here and there? No problem. Go to formal Combat Mage school? Doubtful, though perhaps the 6-year apprenticed Temporal Warrior may consider it, but even then it might take twice as long to complete as they may need extended time to mentally deal with the stress of learning. A 10- or 14-year apprenticed Temporal Warrior may be so traumatized from their past training that they find committing to formal study abhorrent.The_Livewire wrote: ↑Sat Oct 19, 2024 10:36 am \What's another 2 years for a guy at that point? Re: Combat Magic and the Temporal Warrior
Much of the training would prove an overlap, particularly in terms of fundamentals of magic and conventional skills. Of casting OCCs Temporal Warriors would likely be one of the least likely to hold the stigma normally ascribed to Combat Magic.
Those with access to the old Manhunters book (not the Coalition book of the same name) might take a look at the Smoker, which is one of the other solid combat magic classes, which arguably has less baggage than ones such as the Battle Magus.

I didn't think of it as much different than transitioning from US Army to civilian life, or going back to college for a second Bachelors. If anything, it would make the class entertaining.Grazzik wrote: ↑Sun Oct 20, 2024 10:35 pmPick up combat spells as they level up? Sure. Learn a few spells here and there? No problem. "Why aren't you freaking out? That's a Brodkill we're supposed to take out!"
"Son, take on robbing an Atlantean courier. Brodkill? *blam* Recruit stuff."
Re: Combat Magic and the Temporal Warrior
I have to reread merc adv, but given that the book came out alot later. I would not find it unreasonable to give the temp warrior access to combat magic.

Re: Combat Magic and the Temporal Warrior
I agree - the skill learning and application of past experience would make for a generally straight-forward transition. However, Temporal Warriors that are long term apprentices undergo extensive trauma and abuse at the hands of their Raider master, so that is what I was suggesting would hinder their choosing to go back into a magical training program. It may not even be a conscious decision on their part... but simply an instinctual refusal to suffer more abuse, even where there would in reality be no abuse. That said, if they can get past that (possibly with therapy or other supports), then formal training as a combat mage makes sense.The_Livewire wrote: ↑Mon Oct 21, 2024 4:09 pmI didn't think of it as much different than transitioning from US Army to civilian life, or going back to college for a second Bachelors. A. Just access to Combat Mage spells?
OR
B. OCC abilities 1-3?
