pain and the Silver Cord

Unread post by Plane »

noticed something in Between the Shadows page 65 that got me thinking...

"The thunder of a gunshot shattered the air around her, and Conrad screamed in pain. The bastards had aimed for his silver
cord!"

we know the cord has SDC equal to twice the sum of your HP and SDC (NB pg 70) but one thing I'm not clear on is how pain works...

Heck I don't even know what pain rules exist for normal HP and SDC... can you make some kind of roll to avoid screaming in pain when injured for stealth reasons? Are there penalties?

https://palladiumbooks.com/combat-rules suggests using either Ninjas and Superspies rules for pain (a 14+ which is only called out for finger locks and wrist locks you voluntarily mutilate yourself to esscape) or Rifts Canada (which applies in broader circumstances, though how much is "serious injury" isn't clear)

The only explicit number we're given is "being down to 1 or 2 hit points", but there's other stuff like "falls from heights" which is pretty vague. The savings throw is also only about remaining conscious and not about reactions to pain such as whether or not one cries aloud in a stealth situation.

Palladium's pain rules have always come across as an after thought. Most times it is used as fluff text. I generally use a modified version of NSS's pain rules in various circumstances that require it, such as the aforementioned silver cord incident.
