I usually see them with underwater cammeras or high resolution sonar . . .

Sorry, silliness.

I suggest you look through the old BTS book and the Monsters And Animals Book for PFRPG / BTS for a collection of appropriate creatures for land, sea and air.

I,E:

(a) Normal-Oversized/mutant version of regular fauna (known to exist, & occaisionally cause problems). These would provide a fear factor through the investigation. And even if you find them to be just a oversized, overly aggressive version of a normal animal, there's still that threat of an oversized/ overly aggresive aquatic animal.

(b) Normal- Lost Species. Ever hear of the celocanth? What you're dealing with is some natural fauna, although never seen before, or thought long dead. Either dangerous or misunderstood is up to you.

(c) Paranormal- brute - a simple predatory animal, with animalistic intelligence. However, there is some 'unnatrual' possibly an alien form of aquatic life, or an undead form of an otherwise natural fauna! A Ghostly Shark? A Poltergeist Jellyfish?

(d) Paranormal- intelligent- somehting with intellect equal or higher than an human. Merfolk? Aliens from a sea planet? Water demons? Or even some ancient, evil god of the deep with tentacles and an iPod!

Really, the kind of adventures you could spin off are endless. What you have to do as the GM is tailor the adventure to that the party can do it themselves... ie: unless your team already has scuba & deep sea submersible skills... I wouldn't put them looking for ghosts on a submarine at the bottom of the marinas trench... But investigating a series of strange goings on at a resort could easily go in several interesting directions.... imagine having your characters parasail at night, using a thermal camera to look for fluctuations that might indicate some phenomena, when all of a sudden... something happens to the boat....
