They're one of those plot devices that is up to the GM my friend! But if your just looking for an opinion, sure I could buy it. They seem to have the right tech for it. My initial thought was that they were extra-dimensional, or from another Galaxy other than the 3G. But since you mention the core why not. I can't remember off the top of my head if it mentions where they were first encountered? But even if they were encountered outside the Anvil Galaxy I'm sure a GM could come up with a plausible reason.
