Books bound in human skin are much more common than you realize.

Some of the nation's best libraries have books bound in human skin

The Nazis made lamp shades out of human skin. Their favorite lamp shades were made from the skinned and tanned remains of tatooed areas of the skin. They also made some more disturbing artifacts as well, from distinctive and recognizable body parts. Things like bowls or cups.

In some other cultures, it was also common practice to incorporate human bones or leather into other items as well, such as weapons.

The early Christian church in some areas used human leather on the insides of their church doors, from victims they had flayed to death for heresy or refusal to attend church. The leather was there to remind the congregation of what would happen to them if they stopped coming to church.

Today, there are still some churches that are decorated with human bones. Check out this church in The Republic of Czech.

I think everyone knows this, but I'll stat it anyway. The original Necronomicon is suposedly bound in human skin, and, I think, is writen in human blood.

A Book bound in human skin and written in human blood by Mad Arab Abdul Alhazred is the original description of the Necronomicon.

Even something as creepy as a book bound -- or written on -- human skin can seem pretty prosaic and ordinary when discussed as a common object (as we've been doing here).

To turn it into something conveying an atmosphere of horror...

"You pick up the book; it's leathery cover a dark greyish-white, mottled with stains of some unknown organic substance. An undefinable odor seeps from it, and you shudder as you realize it is bound in human skin. The spine of the book feels heavy and ridged, like the knobs of a human spine.

The book feels oddly warm in your hands, when suddenly a tremor seems to pass through the book. Examining the binding more closely, you suddenly see small drops of liquid exuding from the cover. You drop it and stumble back in shock as you realize what you're seeing.

Beads of sweat...

The skin is still alive!"

"As you fight with your revulsion, there is some faint, distant sound coming from somewhere.....but then you realise it's not coming from anywhere else but the tome before you....the book is sighing...."
