Making the Open House a (semi-)regular event?

For discussion of the Palladium Open House, both past (May 2006 & May 2007) and possible future Open Houses. Who's going, games you're running or looking to play, etc.

Making the Open House a (semi-)regular event?

Unread post by erc1971 »

I just finished up reading Kevin's recap of the Open House.

In it, he asked us fans what we thought of having this happen again in the future, and if we would attend. With enough of a positive response, he said he would consider doing this again :-D

So, my thinking, was to start a thread, and let Kevin see just how many people thought this idea was even more "****ing Brilliant!" that RIFTS and give him a count of how many people would continue to show up for this event if it was held in the future.

I will start off by saying I will DEFINATELY do this again if another open house was done. I have never been a huge con attendee, cause they aren't very fun. This was not the case last weekend. I had a blast, by far the best time I have ever had at a con. I kept busy the entire 12 hours on Saturday, and never had a dull moment. Every single artist and palladium staff member I met was friendly, courteous, and more than happy to chat with me - all very nice people indeed. Props to the DM of "Diabolic Disappearance" - the game was fast paced, everyone stayed involved, and I could tell all 6 of the people at the table had fun. Signatures galore! ANd to top it off - I got to play in Kevin's game, in his own personal rec area upstairs - how cool is that!

Let's all let Kevin know how pleased we all were with this event, and that we would attend another in a heartbeat.

I'd love to see this become an annual event.

Two thing I'd really like to see though:

- Better execution of after hours events. Maybe a board where those of us who would like to run spur-of-the-moment events back at the hotel can post room # and info.

- Better pannel scheduling.

Other than that, I had the greatest time and would love to experience it again.

..My wife said the same thing. On Monday Xar pointed out to Kev that I'd refered to her as a pilar three times that weekend.

..Yeah, every year would be a bit much for me (2 kids with another due next month, although it'll probably be here before the end of the month). Likewise, I'd like to attend Gencon or another big regular convention too, so if they went for every other year, or every third or fourth year I'd have less trouble attending.

Not only would I go every year but I would run events! My 3 games were full of fun, interesting players, better than even the big conventions. April/May works out pretty good for me too. Sign me up to run events for the next Open House.

I couldn't help but chuckle upon reading this. Should Kevin hire security for the place now that hundreds of rabid fanboys (and fangirls) know where he lives? (Hey we all know how many hours Kevin works, his house is just for storing his toy collection 8) )

I can just imagine Kevin crashing upstairs in the bed after a 16 hour workday only to be awakened by a tapping sound. Waking up, he finds a fan on a ladder outside the upstairs window holding the latest book he wants signed. :D

I thought it was a great time, even though Chi and I got there so late we couldn't find the time to participate in any of the games (it was too much fun meeting people.) I'd love to see a semi-regular convention, but since I have to travel from Colorado, I'm not sure how often I could make it. But it always great to see the Palladium gang and fans. I'd make a real effort to be there as often as possible.

Though I doubt i'll ever be able to attend, I think a regular 'Pallcon' would be good for the company's morale as well as boosting interest, both among consumers and the industry.

Who knows, maybe one day I will be able to go, when the stars are right.

I think it would be a better thing to do every four or five years.
That way the novelity of it doesn't wein. It also means Kevin and
the staff don't have to keep planning their schedules around the
enormity of hosting such an event. Keep it fresh and something that
comes around every so often and fan will keep on coming. Since
Kev and company attend most of the conventions like Gen Con
and Origins, it still provides the fans an opportunity to meet
them, although having a one on one chat with any particular
person for any length at time at the Open House was always
cut short, as compared to the other conventions.

I agree with the idea that it should be every landmark anniversery. That way, as people have said, it doesnt lose the charm and excitement. Hell, if they said that they were doing one tomorrow I'd book and good, but if they said five years from now at the 30th anniversery they'd do it, my tickets would be bought now. Five years in advance would be too much for Northwest, would it?

I'd go with one every 5 years. It keeps the staff from having to spend so much time on it, gives everyone time to plan ahead (5 years, there arn't that many exuses to be had).

I mean, How long did it take them to plan and set up and take down this thing? That's a long time I'd rather have seen books out. But I can spare once every 5 years.

I can't wait to go again, so 5 years seems like a LONG time.
But it's not that bad, really, and I agree that the Palladium staff should get books out.
Of course, they made a lot of money at this Open House, and if they still need money this time next year it might be a good idea to throw another one (or some similar get-together event).

..Four or five years seems pretty harsh to me. Tri-annual would be a good compromise. One year for them, one year for some other major convention (I've still never attended one) and one year off, for them to pump out books and us to stay home and sleep.
