Someone good with melee weapons

I'm about to start up a Nightbane game... a little lower on the power scale.

One player wants to be a magic user that isn't a gimp when it comes to weapons (she's only played an AD&D 1e wizard) which is pretty easy. One of the classes from Through the Glass Darkly.

Another player wants to be someone who is really good with melee weapons. That one threw me for a loop. If someone wanted someone realy good with guns, we'd let them use a Gunslinger from Rifts: New West.

The only class I can recall that's good with melee weapons is a specialized psionic dueler from a random Rifts book, which isn't what she wants.

Maybe just go with the stats for something from Between the Shadows... I'm not sure. Maybe just allow a skill like Sharpshooting but for sword work and stick it on someone with a decent PP.

You could do a re-vamp on the Paladin from PFRPG. You'd need to rewrite it a bit, and I'd consider whether or not include the demon death blow.

There would also be a bunch of appropriate classes from Ninjas and Superspies/Mystic China - but again you'd have to decide if you want to allow the Chi abilities.

Nightbane has a skill package for the Spook Squad that you could use to build a character, just focus on melee weapons instead of ranged ones.

Um, I think there's also an OCC or two that would be appropriate in Heros Unlimited.

From Rifts, you could re-write the headhunter a bit too.

That's all that jumps off the top of my head, and I just know theres some that I forgot. Hopefully you have at least one of those books. :D

Ooo... Maybe the same occ as the first character, but give 'em quickdraw and dual weapons for their main weapon. Bump their PP just a bit.

Or you could wait a little while and check out the OCC that I'm working on. I'll post here when I get it done. It might be what you're looking for, but might be too powerful.

I guess I'll figure out what type of mage is being used to guage the power level.

I could probobly use almost anything and explain it away as an experiment or something. I think Rifts Japan has the "2nd edition" versions of the wacky N@SS/MC stuff, which would probobly be the best place to look.

Maybe ending up with like a Ninja Juicer with less SDC. That might make an interesting experiment.

Thats one of the best things about this game. The default characters from the core book were Nightbane, Wampires & Guardians so pretty much whatever you do to a human, it's still not going to far :D

Yeah, I forgot all about them! funny considering I used that OCC for RIFTS, Fantasy, HU, etc back in the day.

I think that OCC possibly with a more sword oriented HTH from Japan might be a really good fit

Man that took longer than I thought. I got the idea last night at work, and started the work on this. This is what I do when I'm bored.

In one of the SA books there is a "fencing" OCC that one of the D-Bee races has - I can't remember which book or what it was called, but that had some fairly basic (but adaptable) generic combat bonus type advantages for someone really skilled in a given weapon.

Yeah, that's the one... I am pretty certain that it could be easily adapted to a different weapon type, style, etc. - you could just use the bonuses and then scrap all the actual description text.

Well that works if you want your guy to be a master psychic... which there isn't anything wrong with. We need a Psychic Warrior like that.

I think the Genius/Natural works a bit better for those not wanting to be overtly psychic though.

Yeah, probably. I'm not trying to push my Occ or anything, but I think that it would work pretty well for someone who is looking primarily for a combatent character, but wouldn't mind a few psychic abilities. The beginning psychic abilities are all pretty subtle. If the character chose to increase their stats over time instead of gaining new psychic abilities, then they'd just seem more like a super athlete then a psychic.

In Rifts, I think that this would be a good character to choose instead of a juicer. Similar abilities, but a completely different feel for them. A juicer would still win in most head-to-head fights, but it could be close.

Therumancer wrote:How about the "Ancient Weapon Master" (melee) from Powers Unlimited 2? It's pretty much one of the lower powered characters in HU overall and probably wouldn't unbalance a Nightbane game too badly. The enchanted weapon option there would also mean that his damage wouldn't be reduced every time he hit a hound, which would make the melee practical.

Never heard of it. I saw the title "Powers Unlimited" before and that struck me as a book on powers, not OCCs/Power Categories. Mayhaps I'll check it out sometime

Hmm, some confusion. I wasn't referring to your OCC, but "You Know" suggesting the Amakai Dueler OCC/PCC.

But in general, this player is looking for something very subtle. She doesn't want powers or a bunch of stuff to keep track of. She wants to play a character who could just be a highly trained ex-assassain (or something) that uses melee weapons and could keep up with a magic user.

The Natural seems to be that because while psionics is the way they define the underlaying concept behind why they're good, in the end they just have x points to spend on a few abilities that they're really good.

So thats nothing against your PCC, just something else fits what she wants to do a bit easier.
