cool mutant animal ideas not yet in Rifts

Unread post by Shiva7 »

I wants to hear what others have done with mutant animals that is unique and or interesting that is not in any published rifts material.

My current favorite mtant idea is...

Myutant River/Sea Otters in the Coalition navy.

They are highly intelligent (use rocks to open clam shells etc.), very agile and excellent swimmers.

These mutants would make deadly navy special forces operatives equal to the Navy SEALs if not better.

What are you ideas?

I don't see insect or Bug typers. You'd think with Ix there would be Mantis Hybrids to kill bugs.

Mutants in Orbit had those on Mars, though you could do a lot more with them on Earth as well if you wanted.

How 'bout mutant elephants, or rhinos, or similar though, big critters to use as shock troopers (kinda like bears, but better)

Mutant virusses, arachnids and whales (I know the Pneuma Biforms are almost mutants but the Coalition should really have tried something with Whales by now - Sperm Whales are the most powerful predators on Earth).

In a Delta Blues campaign I ran there was a mutant Hyena named "Laughing Riot." A test subject, he was developed by Bradford to try and create a stealthy assassin versed in psychological warfare. He was also given M.O.M. implants, and thus was one formidable foe.

Yes, foe. It was the player characters' job to track him down. Turns out the crazy thing went AWOL and subsequently "Native" while on assignment and was attacking people at random - including Coalition forces.

Before the P.C.s took him down, he made a habit out of skinning his "prey," and publically displaying the bodies in a variety of disturbing ways within the mangrove swamp.

How 'bout chupracabras (sp... I'm sure that's wrong...). Take the nearest thing to it and mutate it to make one. They'd be sweet (this probably wouldn't be an intentional mutation experiment from Lone Star or anything, just a natural mutant loose in southern US and Central America.

Yeah, that'd be really cool.

I also submitt mutant sharks for the navy. If any of you by chance have seen the movie or read the book Creature then you'd know why I say that (but the CS mutant sharks wouldn't be amphibious b/c that's just silly). But they'd be great for sneak attacks agains medium vessels.

How about a mutant Anaconca. Give the humaniod form, but have each of their limbs be like the body of a snake so they can writhe and move in impossibel ways. Basically they'd be bircks with SN strength, an Auto Dodge, and a bizarre martial arts style of their own.

It might be an irrational fear but I am far more scared of the blue Whale than a puny little shark - that shark might want to eat me and the whale not even notice me but I assure you when it comes to fear, SIZE DOES MATTER!
Besides that a Sperm whale is still probably scarier - big and it does want to eat me, not to mention that if it can take down Giant Squid with relative ease, I think those fears aren't so irrational.

This is sounding more and more like Creature... That mutant thing was created by the navy too!

Also, I guess you're right, even though it might seem silly, I guess that making them amphibious like that would be a huge advantage.

I love that idea too! They'd have a great "horror factor" (not game terms, but just in general -- though they probably would in game terms too) since not only would they look really weird and scary, but also there are tons of people w/ varying degrees of arachnophobia. Plus you're right, they'd make a really good way to combat the Xiticix

I think that there would be trouble with any kind of insect/arachnid. I believe that it is explained in Mutants in Orbit. Also there is a short story in one of the Rifters (entitled "Just Three Words" IIRC) that also shows some possible problems.

Ooh! Just had a thought. Maybe it's time Palladium had a crossover of sorts.

CS Mutant Ninja Turtles!!! Dead Boys in a half shell... Turtle Power! :)

The only needed twist is their shells would have to be either naturally MDC or made so through artificial means, (it counts as partial armor so no armor ratings are needed).

I actually play a mutant hyena as my regular character. Granted, all we did was take a Wolf variant of the regular Dog Boy... But still, he's been really fun to play.

Also, mutant lemurs. But then I suppose you could just use the Monkey Boy from Lone Star as a template for that.

I like the idea of mutant horses with full horse bodies or mostly horse-like but have hands growing out of their ankles on a forward angle so they could wield 4 guns thou I'd give their hind legs big penalties for aiming. Be a funny character but in the west could come in handy to a lucky cowboy lol.

Bearsharktopus!

The creature would have the body and hind legs of a bear, the head of a shark, and tentacles for front legs!

In all seriousness, what about gators/crocs? (I can't remember which live in salt water and which live in fresh water).

Critters that are come from the home worlds of the different DBee races would make sense. Their version of dogs, cats and riding or pack animals. Military or guard 'K-9s'.
I hate it when my mind wonders,
Because I have no idea what it will bring back with it.

They actually have flying jellyfish as a monster in one of the Rifters (#3). It's in the Primorder world article.

Yes.
EVERYTHING would fear the shrew, for it WOULD have an MD bite. I've seen these vicious little bastards run off dogs and coyotes.

Why not use the super shrew also known as the Wolverine? Too common for a mutant though.

It was the first rifter I got, so I remembered it the instant I read your post.
