try sphere of anihilation and create wood and you could make a matter/antimatter type power generator kinda like from star trek :D or from phase world or from whatever other sci-fi universe you like to play in. :D

Let me see if I'm reading this correctly.

The standard way of converting a nuclear-powered device to TW power is to change it to an electrical engine, then convert the electrical engine to TW power.

You're looking to convert a nuclear power plant directly to TW power.

I would require lots of red zircons and ruby quartz, for one thing. You're going to need, IMO, the spells Sub Particle Acceleration, Energy Field (to contain it), and Impervious to Energy (to make the containment perfect, and maximize output). Energizing the assemblage would be about 50 PPE, but it should have a very long lifespan; months with a single charge, indefinite on a ley line.

Nuclear power plants do NOT function the same as a nuclear weapon. :)

Basically, you have plutonium rods inserted into water, which then heat the water to steam and the steam spins a turbine. The steam flows thru a condenser and is forced back into liquid form, to be reheated. Its an advanced closed-circuit steam engine.

All you need tomake a TW equivalent is Create Water, a fire spell (there are lots of them), some pipes down the line where you cast circle of cold (for condensatiom). The turbine charges capacitors and there you have your TW driven power plant, adjust size as neccessary. :D

What I described above is a Fission reactor (the kind used since the '50's). Fusion reactors are experimental (the french are planning to build one). The fuision plant you describe, Semi, is not a plant per se, but the reaction has been created in a lab. I think that's what your thinking of. Besides, you don't want your power plant to be "bomb like"!

But anyway, ya you can make a huge TW steam engine to power your town, or use spells to spin a magneto engine and generate juice that way. There are a lot of practical ways to generate electricity. Check out magneto engines, they are like a "reverse electro-magnets". Instead of using electricity to create a magnetic field, you use magnetic fields to create electricity.

Actually for the most part most reactors use U235 mixed with U238 to get the reaction. Most land based reactors use more U238 than U235 to generate power. A lot of the modern US Navy reactors are using up to like 93 or 95% U235. The use of plutonium would be the results of U235 having been exposed to the reaction. Plutonium is a product of reactors.

Semisonic9 wrote:Mmmm. I think the fusion plants are designed to be more bomb-like. They're using carefully arranged light-waves to super-condense fuel to the point of fusion for relatively tiny periods of time.

I forget how they're capturing the energy, but I don't think it has anything to do with steam and such. Worth looking into, I suppose...

Anyways, back on topic...before this thing can even be built, what skills does your TW have that would even allow him to envision such a project? Unless he's a nuclear physicist AND a Techno-Wizard, it seems pretty far-fetched to me. It's also "the answer to a question nobody asked," but I'll save that argument for another day...

At this point in their deveopment they arn't sustaining the reaction, & not capturing the energy output of the reaction. At least not a usable amount.

I remember reading recently about one of themin Europe that might be ready to begin operating. I'm sure it was there.

Simple:

  • A large, magically indestructible container (or at least one that's impervious to energy;
  • Enchant this container with a permanently open micro-portal to the photosphere of a star;
  • Further enchant this container with a permanently open micro-portal to an ocean on another world/dimension.
  • Build in turbine machinery to take adavntage of the resulting steam to make electricity; siphon off as needed.
  • PPE Cost of this TW device would power said plant for X hours; plant could be run indefinitely on or near a Ley Line (build in a safety to stop the constant PPE flow if necessary).

Voila!! A "nuclear" power plant with nearly infinite energy, at your service; it'll run practically forever.

By the way, what End Product do you want to come out of this TW PowerPlant??? Electricity?? ISP?? Chi??

Screw fission/fusion/electrical turbines; matter/anti-matter reactions blow them all away! Consider this a second vote for the Annihilate-powered reactor.

The requirements to create it aren't listed, but SB1r p. 25 describes a Techno-Wizard Power Source for Robots (which would also work on vehicles and such) that is the equivalent of the standard Nuclear power source.

The cheapest you can get is a one year supply for 2 million credits.
The best you can get is 10 years for 12.3 million credits.
Comparable nuclear systems would cost 1 million and 8 million respectively, so it's pretty clear that the TW systems are WAY more expensive.

I think that Semisonic is right here.
You could take an existing nuclear plant and convert it to Techno-Wizardry, in which case it would no longer be a nuclear power plant.
Kind of how you can take a gasoline engine and convert it to run off of TK instead of petrol.

But it sounds like you're asking for a system where you create nuclear energy via magic, then use that nuclear energy to create electricity.
That would be a lot harder, maybe impossible, and a heck of a lot more dangerous and less efficient.

Is your goal to have energy, or to have nuclear energy?

Though thinking about it would be very costly since the RIFTS SOurce Book 1 has robots that are TW powered and are not cheap like 5-10 million credits I believe.

you would need binding spells electrical spells and a supernatural entity of some power.

I suppose, if they really want a super-powerful but dangerous energy source, they could use Annihilate & go to anti-matter. :D

I got for annihilate as a control device and demenisonal Portal has the fuel since it says in the desc of annihilate that it opens a portal to a deminsion of anti-matter. I like a idea of openning a portal and thoughing in some thing though and watching the fireworks has a killed. Well maybe I will have to use teleport lesser to activite it.

Well, it depends or if you believe the caster knows what he is doing when he cast the spells. Though I guess you could assume he doesn't since magic is a believe not a fact thing.

Should I list the ways?

What about old Star Tek episodes and their antimatter chamber. C'mon now all self-respecting TWs would see that and would wonder if it could work.

Or you could just make a steam turbine. That's how the U.S. generates most of its electrical power.
