Parajumpers

Recently I got my hands on a couple of MK-14SEI photo's involving Parajumpers. Given that what they do is just about perfect for a US Military Recon Game. does anyone use them in their games?

The Photo's
Photo 1

Photo 2

You will notice that the MK-14SEI at the top of Photo 2 has it's selector lever intact.

Looks like an M-14 if the design origionated in the 1990s / 2000s.

So did they make it lighter to make it more portable or did they make it heavier in the hopes for some controllability at full auto? The assault handle probably helps a bit, but I'm not sure it will be enough.

it's an update of the M-14.

H2Oman has a Build Sheet for the MK-14. It's simply an M-14 updated with modern technology. As for it's use on Full Auto, the results are no different than a pre-modernization of Firearms Historian Lee Emerson's M-14E2 "Otto". that particular M-14E2 can put a full 20 round magazine in a 7" circle at 100 yards when prone and bipoded. From a standing position it will still put every round of a three round burst into an IDPA target at 100yards. It has since been improved on with modern parts.

I ment for this thread to be about US Air Force Special tactics units, Not their use of M-14's. I live close to a major USAF base and there are PJ's on base. Depending on the base the Unit is based out of you can have teams that have the lattest equipent or as seen in Photo 2, old equipment that has been upgraded. In Photo 2 the top rifle is a New MK-14 while the bottom rifle is a standard M-14 in a Troy SOPMOD Stock. I know of two different PJ's who have been issued GAU-5's(XM-177) that are so old as to lack a forward assist. the thing that makes them great for Recon games it that they are always active. meaning that they don't wait for a war to start. Parajumper's do secure crashed military aircraft even in peacetime. Don't tell me that a decent GM can't find a good game session out of that.

PJs would be airborne qualified Medics at the very least. I would give them a better Medic skill - they are not that far off from MDs as far as I understand. I probably would give them Land Navigation, too. They train to operate anywhere in the world.

I would let a team be PJs but they all have to be PJs. Although I do not like to get too specialised teams (maybe I am not creative enough hehe). It would be fun for a while certainly.

Way back in the 80's,my stepfather was a Romad he was stationed at Fort Hood,Texas. He would call in airstrikes as well as getting the call sign of any flights that are in the area, what they have how long it will take them to get there, and talking to the AWACS for hostile aircraft problems. He had to be trained as a RTO and be jump qualified.I know things have changed so the Romads probly don't exsits anymore.

My father was with the 173rd during 3 tours in Vietnam and retired out of the 82nd after 23 years or so active.

At one point I worked out a skills package for Modern day units (Combat Controllers, PJs, SOWT, SOF TACP, Army SF, Rangers, Regimental Recon, Force Recon, Recon Battalions, ANGLICO, Radio Recon, SEALs, DEVGRU, Delta, ISA, CIA SAD, SBT, USN EOD). Now I'd have to add Marine Special Operations Teams to the list.

If I can find the stuff when I get home (I'm deployed), I'll post it here. I also had to add several new skills. LALO, HAHO, Fast Roping, Mountaineering, Laser Target Designators, Helo Casting, Small Boat Handling, Watercraft, CQB, and a few others.

I did the same thing as you, but not with as many units. I'd be interrested in seeing what you have (if you can find it) when you get home.

Who are you with and where are you?

My father was in prison....

Oh, but my great uncle was in the Pacific during WWdos.

He was Marine Recon. He did what Predator drones do now, sneak a shore and spot for naval artillery.

He also wrote a book on how to combat guerilla warfare, which JF Kennedy read and signed.

Yeah...

I'm a Cav Scout with an Army National Guard unit deployed to the middle east at the moment. Hopefully I'll be back in the US by next Summer. In my civilan job I'm a Deputy Sheriff and a member of or ERT (SWAT), I also do a little writting (www.swatdigest.com; www.specialoperations.com; www.specwarnet.net), and worked fora company that does tactical team training (US C-SOG, and for a PMC, who i might go back to after this deployment).

Oh...one more note, you can pretty much build a skill package for most of these guys using skills in the game. All SEALs, Force Recon, PJs, and CCT would have Airborne, HALO, SCUBA and Rebreathers. CCT would have Forward Observer and RTO skills, PJs would have medical skills. etc. I'd have to look over the rules to be more specific though.

As for using modern day weapons, I looked at the damage done by similar weapons in the book, and made some modifications. Way back in the day, I had a house rule that affected weapons accuracy, and stole... I mean borrowed, a few ideas from a gaming module for Danger International, called Here There be Tigers. It had some really good ideas on how training could be lost if not used.

Nice! I've been re-writing a lot of my old material. Right now I'm working on BTS, but will be working on my Recon info next.

We've got quite a few "former Marines" in the unit, most were some type of Infantry, and one was an M-60 tank driver. Back when I worked as a corrections officer, about a third of our tactical team was amde up of former Marines. Almost all ofthem came from either MSFC Norfolk, 1st FAST, or MSFB Training Co.

I remember they were all bugging the hell out of me during one of our training days, and they were getting on my nerves, when one of the masked why I didn't go into the Corps. I responded with " because my ASVAB scores were to high for a Marine." Which shut them down rapidly.

I know of a Firearms write who thinks that Scout Cav members are nuts. Nah, Scout Cav or Marines are usually really cool people and alot of fun. My Grandfather on the other hand was simply bloodthirsty at times. During the Suez Crisis he flipped a coin to decide if his radio worked when the Cease Fire order came over the wire.

Since I'm partially responsible for this thread is drifting off target, I'll try to steer it back to the original subject. For those of you who don't know, the rescue carrer field also includes SERE Instructors and Combat Rescue Officers (CRO). CROs are officers who complete a modified version of the standard PJ training course. SERE Instructors teach survival tactics to Air Force personnel, develop rescue equipment, and test out all the new Air Force parachute and "life support" systems (they don't actually perform any rescues though).

Also, and yes this is slightly off topic, some of the other skills I added and modified were Mines (actually I stole that idea from another game), Sling Loading, Jump Master, Instructor (I had the idea for a similar skill, for use by Army SF, but found a better description and used it instead). I also allowed guys to pick a weapons specialization. Your character has a Pistols at 65%. I allowed you to specialize in a specific pistol, M1911Colt .45 and get an additional 25% with that weapon, and you had spent more time training with it.

I also used some stats from one of the Modern Weapons Compendiums to figure out accuracy bonuses.

I am currently reading a book about the PJs. It is titled "None Braver" It is pretty good and is worth the read if you are interested in the topic.
