In addition to standard anti-ship and fighter mines Sentinel Defense Werks manufactures a large variety of automated defensive satellites ranging from the simple Watchdog sensor platform to the mighty Cerberus Attack Drone. All Sentinel satellites are controlled by an onboard artificial intelligence, of varying capability. For example the AI of watch dog platforms are no more intelligent than your average dog and simply ‘barks’ when it detects an intruder, While a Cerberus posses the intellect of a teenage human, and is fully capable of autonomous decision making.

Watchdog class Sensor Satellite
The Watchdog is far and away Sentinels biggest selling defensive satellite with billions in service. Essentially a military reconnaissance probe with the drive system removed. Watchdogs are powered by a combination solar/fission power supply coupled with a low powered ion drive. This power source and a small contingent of nannites capable of basic maintenance and repair allow the watchdog to remain on station for decades at a time with little to no upkeep. With its rock bottom price and maintenance free operation the watchdog has proven itself invaluable to frontier colonies where a meager network of six satellites can alert otherwise defenseless colonists to approaching danger and provide them opportunity to flee or dig in. The satellite posses a rudimentary A.I. (equal to about an I.Q. of 5) that is programmed with the sensor profiles of over a hundred thousand types of spacecraft and monsters further additional craft can be added by the owner. The A.I. can further be programmed to ignore specific space craft/creatures, and to filter routine traffic only sounding the alert when a potential threat is detected.

Steel Rain Ground Attack Satellite
The Steel Rain Class of attack satellites is most unusual in that its weaponry is aimed at the planet it is intended to protect. The satellite is heavily stealthed and normally lies completely dormant making it almost impossible to detect, only upon receiving a predetermined signal or detecting the tell tale energy spikes of military weapons fire does the satellite become active. When activated the satellite actively seeks out hostile ground forces with heavy armor having the highest priority, followed by IFVs and infantry. The satellite can also be controlled manually from the ground. This allows ground forces on invaded worlds to maintain some modicum of orbital fire support even when there are no warships available.
The Steel Rain’s designers new that any kind of high energy discharge would instantly give its position away to orbiting spacecraft as would any kind of missile launch, and a detected defense satellite is simply an extremely expensive gunnery target. The solution was so simple it was a wonder it hadn’t been done already. The bulk of the satellite is merely a large calliope type array of gun barrels and complex targeting systems; within each barrel is an explosive charge and a four foot rod of depleted uranium in a ceramic sabot. When fired from high orbit into a planetary gravity well these rods impact at tremendous velocities and are more than capable of skewering most robots. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on one point of view) they aren’t terribly accurate and are easily avoided. On the other hand the only warning the target usually has is when a depleted uranium spear tears through his tank.

1. Spear Calliope (1): This awesome weapon is not without its flaws. The First shot is effectively a surprise attack with +6 to strike. Subsequent attacks however gain no bonuses and are in fact made at -6 to strike if the target is attempting to evade/moving erratically. The only exception is stationary or immobilized targets i.e. buildings, stuck vehicles etc against which the Steel Rain retains its strike bonus.

Cerberus attack Drone

Strictly Speaking the Cerberus is not a satelite but a robot attack ship. Built from the ground up around a cruiser grade X-ray laser, with a pair of Long Range missile luanchers thrown in for good measure. A pack of Cerberus drones is a lethal threat too anything smaller than a battleship.
Usually deployed in packs of 4-12 the Cerberus is intended to augment existing static defenses; where they can be mantained in a dormant state until needed. Some customers have chosen to maintain 'hunter' packs of perpetually active drones. This practice has resulted in a few unfortunate incidents, and given rise to rumors of the AI's being unstable. Sentinel discourages this practice and has publicly stated that the Cerberus is strictly an attack drone with all the charm and personality of a rabid Kreeghor Bloodhound. Despite the negative publicity; or perhaps because of it the Cerberus remains a hot commodity and is one of Sentinels best selling products.

Arbalest Orbital Missile Platform
The Arbalest is simplicity its self essentially a Long range missile launcher with on board targeting and a limited AI similar to that of the watch dog. Cheap and easy to maintain shoals of Arbalest platforms can be purchased for the price of a single frigate. Arbalests are programmed to hold their fire till the last possible moment and are very hard sensor targets, and while they may be single shot weapons there low price allows even the poorest colony to potentially field hundreds of satellites and very few targets can withstand having hundreds or even thousands of Long Range Missiles suddenly erupt at point blank range.
