TW Steam engine:
a TW firebox attached to a boiler. inside the firebox the chain of spells generates wood, ignites it, boosts the flame, and provides sufficent oxygen to keep it burning. the heat from the firebox causes the water in the boiler to boil, releasing steam which is pushed by steam pressure through a pair of triple expansion pistons, which provide motive force. the steam is then routed through the TW condenser comprised of a ventalated box with spiral tubing runnign through it, where the freezing tempratures created by the Wave of Frost spell cause the steam to turn back to water. the smoke from the TW firebox is vented out the TW smokestack, which is built with a Cleanse spell feature to meet Hope City enviromental ordinances. PPE for these components is supplied by an array of Emeralds mounted in a box on the boiler.

Cost: 400,000 credits.
Base PPE cost: 390
PPE activation cost: 20
Gems required: 10 carats of Emerald, 4 Carat White Pearl, 1.5 Carat Garnet, 1.5 carat Amber, 1 Carat each of Ruby Quartz, Smoky Quartz, and clear Zircon.
performance: 100 PPE provides sufficent energy for 5 hours of activity.
Spells required: Create wood, Breathe without air, ignite fire, Fuel Flame, Wave of Frost, Cleanse

-----------------------
as far as i can tell by the math this is all correct, but it's really annoying that it came out at 400,000 credits. and most of that is gems! those emeralds were expensive, as is the white pearl (i used a larger pearl in the cleanse smokestack to reduce PPE requirements, but wound up adding 20,000cr!)

and i fudged the duration on how long it would run. after all that, i didn't want to have it run for only a few minutes!

one advantage over the TK engine this has (about the only one :( ) is that in theory if you run out of PPE, you could stop, open a valve in the condenser to convert it to a open cycle steam setup, and run it on regular wood! albiet at much lower performance. you'd have to stop and refill the boiler frequently that way though.

if any one has idea's on how to do this idea simpler and cheaper under the TW device creation rules, please let me know. this is a nifty device, but sorta too expensive to be a good alternative to the TK-engine...(though it can be made by a lower level TW than the Tk-Engine, the TW steam engine uses only Lv3 spells... and basic mechanical parts.)

i've been refining the concept, with the help of the wonderful guys over at nexusnine.net.

TW Steam engine Mk2
a TW firebox attached to a boiler. the magical flame of the Firebox generates heat that causes the water to turn into steam, which creates pressure in the boiler. this pressure is used to drive multiple expansion pistons. the lower pressure steam that exits the pistons is run through a series of expansion chambers and radiators, exiting as liquid water once again, which is pumped back into the boiler.
Device level: 5
Cost: 62,825 credits.
Base PPE cost: 100
PPE activation cost: 5
Duration: 10 minutes
Gems required: 3 carat Diamond, 5.5 Carat Smoky Quartz, 2.5 Carat Ruby (deep red)
performance: 60 PPE provides sufficent energy for 2 hours of activity.
Spells required: Circle of Flame, Fuel Flame.

dropping the PPE storage (gems and extra cost mod) brings it to 53,325cr.

turns out diamonds are actually cheaper to use as PPE storage than Emeralds. go figure.
one thing that pops to mind. i've been treating the PPE storage as a seperate assembly, and not factoring in it's Carat's into the PPE and Credit costs of the device itself. should i be doing that? (would knock a few thousands credits off the price, plus it would reduce the PPE costs...)

well, looks like i'll be moving onto the Mk3 attempt then...

once i've got some basic stats for the engine, i plan to create a few vehicles using it. in terms of power steam engines aren't very spectacular, but without having to lug around a large supply of fuel means you can get around the worst of the inefficencies.

TW Steam engine Alternate-1
You need a Warlock friend.
(Might want to check my math...Some of TW creation is hard for me to understand at times).
Device level: 5
Cost: 70,000 [Rounded up]credits.
Base PPE cost: 110
PPE activation cost: 6 (I rounded up)
Duration: 10 minutes
Gems required: 3 Carat Ruby (deep red) & 1 carat Zircon ( red)
(Battery PPE Needed): 60 PPE provides sufficent energy for 3 hours and 20 minutes
Spells required: Cloud of Steam and Energize Spell

TW Steam engine Alternate-2
**I came up with this to make a "Forever" forge but it would work to turn water to steam (you'll just need the water).
Same set up as TW Steam engine Mk2 but you need a Warlock friend.
(Might want to check my math...Some of TW creation is hard for me to understand at times).

Duration: (*The secondary spell duration kicks in) 3900 YEARS!!! [Now, you got a flame that just keeps going :D ]
Spells required: Circle of Fire and Eternal Flame

TW Steam engine Alternate-2A: Reduce PPE Cost
**I came up with this to make a "Forever" forge but it would work to turn water to steam (you'll just need the water).
Same set up as TW Steam engine Mk2 but you need a Warlock friend.

And

TW Steam engine Alternate-2B: Super Low PPE Build
**I came up with this to make a "Forever" forge but it would work to turn water to steam (you'll just need the water).
Same set up as TW Steam engine Mk2 but you need a Warlock friend.
(Might want to check my math...Some of TW creation is hard for me to understand at times).
Device level: 6
Cost: 609,400 credits (Wow thats costly..but read on*)
Base PPE cost: 340

Very nice material! I'm looking forward to trying it out in my own game.
